As COVID-19 cases surge across the country, an increasing number of couples are suddenly revamping their living wills to include specific language about what to do if someone in their family catches the novel coronavirus and may not be able to make medical decisions for themselves.“I think like a lot of people it certainly caused us to take a step back and say, ‘wow, these types of black swan events happen,’” said Adam Neale, who recently updated his living will.Neale and his wife, Dorean, say the grim reality of COVID-19 pushed them to finish estate planning they had been putting off for years. But the pandemic hasn't only led to a spike in families planning out their estates, it's also changed the way couples are looking at end-of-life care.“What we’ve seen is this heightened sense of awareness of people’s mortality, which has created a heightened sense of urgency in the market, explained Denise McCarthy, an estate attorney in the Boston area.“I don’t think people have thought about ventilators the way they’re thinking about them now.”McCarthy is now recommending couples write in COVID-19 specific language to their wills, like what to do if one spouse ends up on a ventilator. She also says it's important to appoint a healthcare proxy, clearly putting a spouse or family member in charge of your medical care. It’s something that has become more important now than ever as many hospitals are barring visitors because of COVID-19.“It’s one less source of stress in a very tough time,” she said.Nationwide, only about 30 percent of couples have any kind of living will. That now includes Dorean and Adam Neale, who fully admit a pandemic pushed them to plan for the inevitable.“For me, the peace of mind was checking the box on something you were supposed to do and something that you should do,” said Dorean Neale. 1841

American Airlines says employees can wear pins supporting Black Lives Matter. The airline is calling it a matter of equality, not politics. With the decision, Texas-based American joins Starbucks, Delta Air Lines and other major companies that let employees show support for the movement that protests police violence against Blacks. Starbucks let employees wear Black Lives Matter shirts after initially reportedly banning them.President Donald Trump has urged supporters to boycott Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after a report that it approve Black Lives Matter clothing but not pro-police Blue Lives Matter or Trump’s campaign slogan. The tire company CEO later clarified that clothing supporting law enforcement is allowed, but not attire supporting political candidates. 782

An Australian energy company is giving hundreds of female employees a raise to make sure they get paid the same amount as their male counterparts. It's "not right or fair to expect women to have to wait any longer for the pay gap to close -- so, we're fixing that right now," said Catherine Tanna, managing director of Energy Australia, said in a statement announcing the move.Around 350 women at the electricity and gas supplier will receive a one-off adjustment to their salaries, with an average increase of about 3,500 Australian dollars (,740), according to the company. About 80 men who earn less than colleagues doing the same job will also get a salary bump. The raises will add an extra 1.2 million Australian dollars (0,000) to the company's annual salary bill. It announced the investment Wednesday, on the eve of International Women's Day.The changes will be made quickly. Energy Australia said the new pay packages will go into effect next month, effectively closing the company's current 2% gender pay gap.But addressing the broader issue of unequal pay across Australia will take a lot longer.Australian women earn on average about 84 cents for every dollar that men earn, according to government figures. The gap widens once annual bonuses and other additional payments are included, with women earning about 73 cents for every dollar that men earn. That means men working full time earn nearly 27,000 Australian dollars (,000) a year more on average than full-time women employees, according to Australia's Workplace Gender Equality Agency.Everyone is playing catch up to Iceland. The Nordic country made it illegal to pay women less than men earlier this year, requiring companies to proactively get equal pay certification from the government.Iceland ranks first among 144 countries for gender equality across politics, education, pay and health policies, according the World Economic Forum's annual report on the issue.Australia comes in at 35, while the US is ranked 49.  2009
