SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of Poway Friday honored the memory of Lori Lynn Gilbert-Kaye, who was killed last April in a shooting at a local synagogue, by renaming a street after her.Many gathered Friday for the unveiling of Lori Lynn Lane (formerly Eva Drive). It's located in the Green Valley Neighborhood, off Stone Canyon Drive. Lori Kaye lived at that intersection. “To be able to dedicate this street to her memory means a lot to us in Poway,” says Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.RELATED: Family discovers synagogue shooting victim's random act of kindnessNeighbors and friends came together and petitioned for the change. Vaus says it's rare for the city to rename a street after someone. The last one dates back to the 1980s. But Vaus says the city had no hesitation with this renaming. The Poway City Council unanimously approved the honor in November. Gilbert-Kaye lost her life in that tragic synagogue shooting back in April. Many say she was a light in this community. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights, and Lori was a bright and shining light,” says Vaus. “I think the one word that people would use to describe her, she was a giver.”Vaus says as they are a few months away from the first anniversary of the shooting, the City of Poway will continue to stand strong, and lift up Gilbert-Kaye’s family. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Coast Guard is searching for three people after a fishing vessel caught fire Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and leading to the rescue of 15 more.According to the Coast Guard, the crew of a 42-foot fishing vessel named “Time Machine” called to report seeing a fire at 9:35 p.m. 28 miles south of Point Loma. The good Samaritans aboard the boat were able to pull 15 people out of the water, including two who were injured.10News spoke to the captain and crew of "Time Machine."Captain Mike Koesterer and his crew were on their way back into San Deigo from a fishing trip in Baja California when he saw an explosion in international waters. "I saw an orange flash," he said. For the next 20 minutes, he drove his vessel closer to the ball of fire. The next thing he saw will be etched in his mind forever. “We thought it might be a few people. But we kept on counting and counting and counting," Koesterer said.In the water, he and his crew witnessed 15 people screaming for help. Some had life vests. Others were wading. That's when his son Reeve changed into his diving suit and jumped in to help.“I knew there were going to be burns, but I didn’t think it would be that bad,” Reeve Koesterer said. He first pulled up a woman without a life vest. She desperately grabbed his hair and used Koesterer as a floatation device. The next few rescues were a blur. One by one, he carried and pulled the burn victims onto the "Time Machine." During the rescue, one of the victims told Reeve Koesterer that this was part of a human smuggling operation. “Do whatever we can to get them out of the water. No matter what the case is. They’re still lives,” Reeve Koesterer said. Andy Vo is usually responsible for shooting and editing fishing videos for the "Time Machine's" charter trips. Last night, he was also documenting the rescue on his phone. As the Koesterers were pulling people on board, Vo comforted the victims-- giving them blankets and coffee. “People that we rescued. He called us angels," Vo said. What are the odds that a fishing boat carrying Reeve Koesterer--  a young, bilingual English Spanish speaker, expert diver -- would be right there to save those lives? For veterans, a no frills way to work on your game."It's short, it's inexpensive, and it's well kept," Fred Leipold, an avid Loma Club golfer, told 10News.Lauren Gomez first played at the club when she was just a toddler. Now, she tees off with a scholarship to Pepperdine University in her back pocket. "I know a lot of kids come out here to practice. There's not a lot of golf courses around here, so it's really important to Point Loma," Gomez said.More than a century of history sits in the club's soil. At one time, a young Phil Mickelson played tournament at what was then called Sail Ho.Which is why players and locals were shocked to learn the Loma Club put out a notice that it will close in late December.Point Loma residents flooded social media following the news, worried that the same thing could happen in other nearby communities: Golf courses shutting down with plans to fill the land with housing. Residents from Escondido to Chula Vista have all seen long battles with developers."I think somebody's going to recognize the importance. You really can't tear this out," golfer Rick Gomez said. "It's too perfect."For the time being, those fears were put to rest, after a spokesperson with Pendulum Property Partners, who owns the Loma Club property, said the site would remain a golf course. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is providing free COVID-19 testing to all school employees returning to in-person learning, a recommendation by the California Department of Public Health.There are more than 80,000 school employees across the county. “This is everybody from bus drivers, to food service workers, to teachers, to administrators,” said Music Watson, the Chief of Staff for the San Diego County Office of Education, or SDCOE.While most schools are sticking with distance learning, for now, some are preparing to return to in-person learning starting in September.The school employees that do return will be tested for COVID-19 often.“The recommendation is that in any given two month period, you’ve tested 100% of school employees, with about half being tested in any given month,” said Watson. “People who are doing distance learning and teaching in a distance format and not coming into contact with students and school staff, they’re not going to have to be tested.”The county is partnering with SDCOE to develop more testing sites specifically for school employees by late September.Testing is currently available at the more than 20 county coordinated sites at no cost to school staff.If positive tests are discovered, classrooms, schools, and districts may need to shut down for two weeks.“If 5% of a classroom tests positive, that classroom would close, and they would self-isolate. If 5% of a school tests positive, the school would close for two weeks, and if 25% of district tests positive, the entire district would close for that two week self-isolation period,” said Watson. “In a classroom, 5% is basically one student or teacher, that’s why it’s so important to have a testing protocol in place.”If a classroom or school does have to shut down, students will continue learning for the two weeks.“That doesn’t mean all of a sudden it’s 14-days of no learning, it means transitioning to virtual which might be online or packet work depending on the particulars of that situation,” said Watson.It’s not currently recommended that asymptomatic children get tested for COVID-19, but if a parent or guardian wants their child tested, they should discuss it with their pediatrician. 2222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Christ United Methodist Church's Safe Harbors Network needs help to prepare for the next wave of migrants approaching the US-Mexico border.The network, started in 2016, provides basic necessities for refugees, such as a bed, shower, food, clothes, medical care and legal aide, until their court date."They don't have anything, they have the clothes they're wearing, they don't have phones, they don't have money, they would be homeless, so we take them in," Volunteer Kathryn LaPointe said.In 2016 the majority of their refugees were Haitian, over the past several months they're mostly women and children from Central America."We're taking in between 20 and 30 a night the past few days, most of them were able to send to their families, but I would like to help more people," LaPointe said.Sunday, LaPointe said they're at capacity and need all the help they can get. "Every person that walks in front of me, I ask for a building," she said laughing, "can you please get me a building."The network is comprised of individuals, congregations and organizations who care for refugees. "[Provide] basic human kindness, and," LaPointe said as she sighed heavily, "I am so grateful to be able to do that to extend that kindness and I would like to extend that kindness to more people." 1347
