SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Solana Beach man is back in San Diego still recovering from a spinal cord injury that happened halfway around the world in Bali.Anthony Galvan-Schaible's journey happened during the pandemic and even though he's back home, there are months of intensive rehab ahead.Schaible went to Bali in February with plans to stay until April. Then the pandemic started and he had to stay.In late July, Schaible was in a motorcycle accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He required emergency surgery halfway around the world.RELATED: Local man's trip to Bali takes unexpected turn after crashHis mom flying to be by his side."Pretty much just got stronger and we had to figure out how to fly business class," Schaible said before his return.Two weeks ago, Schaible made it back home, transferred to UCSD La Jolla after three flights and 36 hours of travel with doctors on board."Definitely noticing myself get a little stronger as the days go by but next is an acute rehab facility," said Schaible.In the coming days, Schaible will move to Loma Linda University inpatient rehab. Doctors haven't ruled out the possibility of regaining movement and one day walking again — something Schaible plans to work towards one day at a time."At this point, it's just pretty positive and just looking forward to moving more and wiggling a little bit more and hopefully getting these legs going would be my goal," Schaible says.The family still posted a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspicious backpack prompted a bomb squad response downtown Tuesday afternoon. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. just outside the federal building on the 800 block of Front Street. Authorities say a security guard at the building saw a man acting suspiciously before tossing a military backpack into a planter. After using special equipment to examine the bag, the bomb squad found only personal items inside the bag. The FBI said it sent agents to the scene, but that the "matter is being led by Federal Protective Services." 596

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report for a San Diego State student who died after falling from his bed after a night of partying revealed elevated alcohol levels.The report from the county Medical Examiner found that Dylan Hernandez, 19, died of blunt force injuries of head and ruled his death an accident. At the time of the autopsy, a toxicology report said elevated alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and cannabinoids were found in his system. However, earlier reports from campus police said he had a 0.23 percent blood-alcohol level the morning he fell.Hernandez fell from his bunk bed in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2019, after a fraternity party that night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Australian national and his Long Beach business partner are accused of siphoning more than million from the State of California in a years-long charter school scheme. According to the San Diego District Attorney, the pair sought out small school districts with limited experience in oversight and proposed they start online charter schools to earn more public funds. Sean McManus, 46, and Jason Schrock, 44, the CEO and president of A3 Education, along with nine other people named in the case have been indicted in San Diego County. Criminal counts include conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds, paying for student information and conflict of interest.A year-long investigation uncovered a massive scheme in which McManus and Schrock told subordinates and co-defendants to open a total of 19 charter schools in both San Diego County and statewide, according to the DA. On top of creating the charter schools, both McManus and Schrock are accused of running another scam that paid athletic organizations for student information. The pair reportedly paid pre-existing youth programs as little as per student for enrollment documentation and would then enroll the students into a charter school during the summer, collecting roughly ,000 per student from the state. McManus and Schrock are then accused of transferring more than million in public charter school funds into companies the pair own or control. Instead of spending the money on education, once the money was in private bank accounts, both men are accused of using the funds for themselves and their families. According to authorities, McManus and Schrock used the money to invest in startup companies, real estate, and wired money directly to themselves or family members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman was left laying in a gutter with a broken pelvis in Pacific Beach after a vehicle hit her and fled the scene Friday.San Diego Police say the 27-year-old woman was walking in the area of 4300 Ingraham St. at about 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle traveling northbound hit her. The vehicle fled the scene, leaving the woman in a gutter on the street when officers arrived, SDPD said.RELATED: Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near Brown Field in Otay MesaThe woman was taken to the hospital with a fractured pelvis and multiple abrasions.There was no description of the vehicle, according to police.
