SAN DIEGO (CNS) -The county Health and Human Services Agency Friday reported two unrelated tuberculosis cases, and that people may have been exposed to the bacteria at Southwestern and San Diego City colleges, and on a Metropolitan Transit System bus route.The county is working with officials from both community colleges and MTS to notify those who may have been exposed to TB. The periods of possible exposure were:Aug. 26 to Dec. 10, 2019 at Southwestern College;July 26, to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019 at San Diego City College;July 26 to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019, Monday through Friday on MTS Bus Route 12, with two departure routes: from Skyline Hills between 7:59 and 8:47 a.m. to City College Transit Center, and from City College Transit Center between 7:04 and 8:04 p.m. to Skyline Hills.Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss, said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis do not develop the disease," she added.Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People with TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical healthcare provider, according to the county.According to the county, the number of tuberculosis cases has decreased since the early 1990s, with 265 cases reported in 2019.Free TB testing will be available at Southwestern College Student Health Services, 900 Otay Lakes Road, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 63-year-old man was hospitalized after being stabbed in Sherman Heights Saturday night.The stabbing happened on the 2200 block of Imperial Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.Authorities say the man was arguing with a 19-year-old when the teen stabbed him in the ribs below his armpit.RELATED: PB man stabbed six times, suspect apprehendedAfter the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene, police say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria.She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria.She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' Her son decided not to get a flu shot this season, despite almost always getting it in the past."Take it. Take the flu shot if you can," said Maria. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of local doctors slammed San Diego's Board of Supervisors for not denouncing reported intimidation of the county's public health officer.The San Diego County Medical Society issued a statement, saying they are, "extremely disappointed by the failure of the Members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to stand up against the personal abuse, attempted intimidation and doxing of our County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten."SDCMS pointed specifically to public testimony at the BOS' hearing on Tuesday, during which a caller revealed Wooten's address. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. "She was so proud and honored of her time here at Mission Bay.""I'm wowed by how many people were inspired by her," Reilly added.
