CIA director Gina Haspel found herself at the center of a political dispute Tuesday amid reports that the White House was blocking her from briefing Senators on the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.Illinois Democrat Sen. Bob Corker, has suggested that the planned Wednesday briefing from Mattis and Pompeo alone would not be sufficient to answer the growing number of questions about Khashoggi's death.And claims that the White House was actively working to prevent her from testifying only fueled concerns about Trump's willingness to appropriately respond to the murder.The CIA declined to comment on what led to the decision that Haspel will not brief lawmakers Wednesday.A Senate aide told CNN that the White House is responsible for determining who briefs the Senate on behalf of the administration, and they seem determined to ignore requests from Corker to include an appropriate intelligence briefer, which could include Haspel or Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.Another congressional aide said Tuesday that the White House is attempting to "hide" Haspel in an attempt to prevent her from sharing details that may not align with its public response to Khashoggi's murder."If they were confident in their story they would send her to the US Senate and have her brief US senators. But the fact that they are hiding her and not allowing her to tell the Senate what she knows ... it really tells you all you need to know," the aide said.But Bolton denied claims that the White House was preventing Haspel from participating in the briefing, responding "certainly not" when asked about the reports.Trump has rankled top lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in recent weeks by signaling he will not take strong action against Saudi Arabia or its crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, for the murder and dismemberment of Khashoggi.The President has also raised doubts about the CIA's assessment connecting the regime to the murder.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back on the assertion Tuesday that Trump does not believe Khashoggi was killed at the direction of the crown prince."We haven't seen definitive evidence come from our intelligence community that ties him to that," she said.A US official told CNN last week that there is still is no smoking gun implicating the crown prince directly and the intelligence assessment is ongoing. Intelligence officials have said the CIA presented the President with a confidence-based assessment given the facts of the situation.Though sources tell CNN that the CIA has assessed with high confidence that the prince directed Khashoggi's murder, which was conducted by members of bin Salman's inner circle, the fact that they don't make a final conclusion gives the White House an out.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell raised concerns about the "abhorrent" actions by Saudi Arabia during a press briefing when asked if he believes the crown prince and others should be punished for Khashoggi's killing.McConnell noted that senators are currently discussing how to respond but would not answer CNN's question if Haspel should attend Wednesday's briefing.Congressional lawmakers have continued to push for answers from the administration despite the White House's public response.Corker warned Monday that there will be "a lot happening" in Congress on Saudi Arabia, including a vote as soon as this week calling for an end to US involvement in Yemen, as he renewed demands for Haspel to brief senators on Khashoggi's murder.As lawmakers continue to discuss potential options for a response, Trump has signaled he will not take strong action against Saudi Arabia or bin Salman.Two sources told CNN on Monday that the US has "slammed the brakes on" a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a limited ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid in Yemen over concerns about angering Saudi Arabia.One source familiar with the negotiations over the resolution tells CNN the US "has slammed the brakes on," saying that "we can't support a resolution at the moment."The source also said the move is at odds with what US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has been signaling to her counterparts at the UN, since she was supportive of the planned resolution weeks ago.The White House declined to comment as did the US Mission to the United Nations. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Jeff Miranda loved his job with the Border Patrol. His entire 17-year career was in San Diego County. Now, he’s battling a deadly disease that forced him into early retirement.Jeff and Liz Miranda live in Chula Vista. In early 2015, they started to notice something wasn’t right. “He was doing a presentation at work and all of a sudden, his voice just wouldn’t project,” Liz said.They then noticed fasciculation, which Liz described as small tremors throughout his body. His speech was also becoming increasingly slurred. “We had a feeling it was something neurological at this point,” Liz said.Several months later, they received the official diagnosis. It was ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It is also often called Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association.“We were… somewhat psychologically prepared by the time he got officially diagnosed because we had already suspected it for a couple months,” Liz said.Liz said, however, it was heart stopping when they first found out ALS was a possibility. “Your mind [goes] a million miles an hour,” she said.Jeff, an avid cyclist and outdoorsman, is now confined to a wheelchair and uses eye gaze technology to communicate. “As horrible [as] ALS is and given that there is still no cure, I feel very lucky about today’s technology.This computer device and the chair didn’t exist before. Both devices have been an enormous help to me and my family,” he said.They have made modifications to their home, including a wheelchair ramp and lift. Liz said Jeff still has his sense of humor and is the same person cognitively. He joked that he charges five dollars for a ride in the wheelchair lift.“I think that sometimes people will see him and talk to me and ask me questions for him,” Liz said. “He can answer you. It just takes a second to respond.” There is currently no cure to the disease. The average survival time is 3 years, according to the ALS Association.About 20 percent of people with ALS live five years, 10 percent will survive ten years, and five percent will live 20 years or more.“I think on a whole, we want to continue living our life. It’s all about attitude really. We could be sitting here miserable and then we’d miss out on the time that we have,” Liz said.There was one moment during the interview that brought tears to the couple. That was when Jeff spoke about his wife’s support.“The real victims are my family and loved ones which has been my biggest struggle living with this disease. My wife has been the most positive person that I have ever met. Having her by my side always with a smile has given me enormous happiness and hope. She has always made me feel like the luckiest man in the world,” Jeff said, as his eyes started to well up.Jeff and Liz have been together for 24 years, meeting on their first day of college in Florida. They got married in 2001 and have two teenage daughters.The battle against ALS not only has emotional and physical impacts, but it is also taking a huge financial toll.Liz had to quit her job in order to take care of Jeff, who is now 100 percent dependent. They are worried about losing their home. Jeff has exhausted the remainder of his paid time off. His fellow Border Patrol agents have donated some of their time to help the family, but that is also soon running out.“We’ll have to leave California, which would be a snowball effect because we leave California, he leaves all his doctors. We lose all our friends and our family that are here, our support system,” Liz said.Liz said she reluctantly set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses. “We’ve never had to ask for anything. Never wanted to, so that was very hard for us,” she said.Through the campaign, though, she discovered the kindness of both friends and strangers. She said the support “melts your heart.”“ALS has stolen my abilities to do the things I used to love, plus a million other things most people take for granted. But it will never steal what’s the most important thing in my life and that’s my family and friends,” Jeff said. 4190

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread has been stopped after a fire sparked near a canyon in Chula Vista Thursday evening. The fire started around 5 p.m. in a canyon on the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive. It is in a residential area near the San Miguel Mountain Trailhead.Video from the scene showed white smoke billowing from the canyon. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) - The family of a 56-year-old man who died earlier this year following an encounter with Chula Vista police announced Monday they are filing a pair of wrongful death lawsuits against the city.The lawsuits seek the names of the officers involved in the March 13 call for service that culminated in Oral Nunis' death.Both lawsuits are being filed in San Diego federal and state courts on behalf of four of Nunis' children, including his daughter Kimone, who called 911 shortly after midnight March 13 after her father began experiencing a mental health issue and attempted to jump out of a second-story window.While addressing reporters at a news conference announcing the lawsuits, Kimone Nunis said responding officers did not speak to her or ask her what was happening with her father when they arrived."That night, I just wanted help. I picked up the phone. I didn't know what I was getting myself into," she said.Attorneys for the family say officers tackled Nunis outside the home and "dogpiled" atop him, placed him in a WRAP restraint device and put a "spit hood" over his head.In a statement released shortly after Nunis' death, the police department said he was restrained to prevent him from hurting himself or others. The department also alleged Nunis was "uncooperative with officers and struggled as they attempted to detain him," resulting in injuries to two of the officers.The federal lawsuit alleges Nunis was unconscious and unresponsive after the altercation, and that those restraints were placed upon him while he was unconscious.Nunis was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.Attorney John Burris, who represents the family, said police should have responded by de-escalating the situation."Mr. Nunis was seeking help. The family was seeking help. But instead of getting help, he was met with force," Burris said.A similar lawsuit was filed last month on behalf of Nunis' widow and three other children. Their attorney, Carl Douglas, alleged the city has withheld Nunis' cause of death, while a statement released by the city last month indicated his cause of death has not yet been determined."The City of Chula Vista understands and shares the public's and the family's desire to have all of their questions answered about this incident. However, it is premature and inappropriate to come to any conclusions at this time," according to the city's statement in response to that lawsuit. "The investigation is ongoing, and the true cause of death has not been determined by the Medical Examiner. Because of this, and now the threat of litigation, the City and the Police Department must refrain from commenting further beyond the statements already made. The City and Police Department continue to express our deepest condolences to the family and all of those touched by Mr. Nunis' tragic passing."City officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the latest filings.In addition to the federal lawsuit alleging wrongful death and violations of Nunis' civil rights, the state lawsuit seeks the release of the officers' names.The complaint states Kimone Nunis submitted a California Public Records Act request in July seeking the names of the involved officers, as well as body camera footage, reports and statements from witnesses and other information police have regarding the case.According to the lawsuit, which alleges the city violated the CPRA, the family was told months later that the information was being withheld "because of ongoing criminal and administrative investigations." 3591

(KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies.The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years.The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development.The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction.
