FUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has called for concrete measures to promote the construction of the economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Strait.Wang made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour to the southeastern Fujian Province that ended Friday.Wang also asked local departments of commerce, customs, quality inspection, finance and tourism to make efforts to support the construction of the economic zone.During his visit to Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, Wang inspected a bridge under construction that will connect the island with the mainland, as well as industrial development and the tourism industry on the island.Wang also visited the Wuyi Mountain and some tourist attractions in Fuzhou city, and urged a sound development of local tourism industry.
BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left here Monday morning for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit on April 12-13 in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. President Barack Obama.Hu will deliver a speech stressing the importance of nuclear security and clarifying China's policy on the issue. Hu will meet with Obama on the sidelines of the summit.Up to now, leaders or representatives from 46 countries, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union (EU), and other international organizations have confirmed their attendance."We hope common ground can be increased between all participants, and that they will pay greater attention to nuclear security, and work together to safeguard international peace and security," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said last week. BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Military Commission has issued a set of guidelines aimed at developing a comprehensive system upgrading military information security, a statement from the commission said Monday.Approved by Hu Jintao, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, the Guidelines on Enhancing Military Information Security under New Situations set out an overall arrangement to advance military information security work by "tackling critical issues" facing China's armed forces.Improvement of military information security is a requirement for the modernization of China's national defense and military buildup, said the guidelines.The document stressed the importance of enhancing organizational bodies, working mechanisms, specialized personnel and technical safety to realize improved information security in the ranks. It gave priority to network security and electromagnetic safety as two major working areas, among others.Military officers and solders should receive proper education to get prepared for military information security against the new backdrop, said the guidelines.
BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- In a bid to further regulate the selection and promotion of government and Party cadres, the Communist Party of China (CPC) turned to the public for help in its four newly released documents."One breakthrough of these rules is we shift the focus from simply supervising the procedures of cadre selection and promotion to also weighing in what the colleagues and the locals think about," said a statement released Monday by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.The four documents, promulgated on March 31 by the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, cover the selection and auditing of officials and set out penalties for those found guilty of misconduct in the selection and promotion of government and Party cadres.According to the new rules, personnel departments should consult staff within the organization on every newly appointed officials. The results, paired with local Party committees' official report on personnel changes, will be submitted annually to superior Party committees' for review.These opinions will also be incorporated into the work evaluation of officials in charge of local cadre selection and promotion.In serious cases, leading officials in the Party committees who misuse their power and violate CPC regulations on the selection and appointment of Party and government cadres could be dismissed from their posts, demoted, transferred to other posts, or asked to resign.To better solicit public opinions, Party committees at provincial levels across the country are moving to open online service and telephone hotline for whistleblowers to report such violations.According to the rules, personnel departments must carry out investigation based on detailed reports from the public and the media.
SHANGHAI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Li Yuanchao, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met Friday with Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in Shanghai.Li, also president of the CPC's Pudong Cadre College, hailed the development of Sino-Singapore ties since the two states established diplomatic relations in 1990.He pledged to further party-to-party exchanges and cooperation with Singapore in personnel training, urban development and environmental protection.Lee said he hoped the two states would expand cooperation.
