SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A community vigil to honor last week's El Paso shooting victims is set for 7 p.m. Sunday in Balboa Park, organizers said Saturday."We wanted to express our grief and be there for the community," Jessica Yanez Perez, a vigil organizer, said. "As a border city with strong Latino heritage, we stand with El Paso and grieve with them."The two-hour event will be held outside the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and will feature community speakers, a prayer vigil and biographies of the 22 victims of Aug. 3's mass shooting, Perez said."This event is an opportunity to bring the community together as we mourn, remember and hopefully, in time, heal," Perez said. "It's our shared responsibility to speak out against white supremacy and intolerance, and to build an America where all of us are safe."A traditional mariachi band will perform at the vigil, she said. SAN DIEGO — Demoralized business owners are venting their frustration and resentment over the new shutdown order meant to help stop the spread of the coronavirusMonday was day one of restaurants doing takeout only, bars, wineries and personal care shuttered, and hotels limiting travelers.This time, however, workers and employers alike feel like they're being hung out to dry."You're shutting us down, it's like, alright, here you go, good luck. That's what it feels like," said Cesar Vallin, who laid off 70 percent of the remaining staff at the Cloak & Petal restaurant in Little Italy. "The future is we're going to be here and we're going to get through this. I have to really question or ask myself if I want to stay in this business."For the second time since March, Cloak & Petal has been relegated to takeout only due to the new shutdown order. Bars, wineries and personal care salons are totally shut down, while hotels may have to turn away away non-essential out-of-state travelers. All of this - without the help of forgivable federal small business loans and a 0 dollar a week boost in unemployment, key stimulus during the first shutdown in march.The state says as of October, more than 118,000 San Diegans worked in food and drinking establishments.At the Intercontinental San Diego hotel on the waterfront, General Manager Chuck Abbott said he had to let go 10 to 20 percent of his staff - now that outdoor dining is outlawed. He expects occupancy to drop into the single digits this week as some leisure travelers cancel due to the order."Every day, every week, every time something else comes out, we have to readjust," Abbott said. "It's just hard."And they'll have to adjust to this reality for at least the next three weeks.Under the order, retail is able to remain open at 20 percent. 1827

SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A new Google search tool will allow service members transitioning to civilian life to include their military occupational specialty code to find jobs that match their skills.The tool announced Monday is part of the tech giant's "Grow with Google" initiative aimed at helping Americans get jobs or grow their businesses. The program also is offering transitioning service members, and their spouses, computer training.In addition, when users are searching for a place on Android or iOS mobile device or in Google Maps and open a business listing, a "veteran-led" designation will let people know which businesses are owned and run by veterans.The initiatives are part of Google's plans to spend billion on nonprofit organizations helping to raise education levels around the world. 808

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of San Diego high school seniors will be honored with other students from throughout Southern California Friday at the second annual Pacific Islander High School Graduate Recognition Ceremony in San Bernardino.Long Beach, Inland Empire and other surrounding regions will participate in the event, which will include cultural celebrations like a Polynesian fireknife performance and a Maori warrior dance.Siaosi Veimau, who immigrated to the U.S. from Tonga at age 10, will serve as the ceremony's keynote speaker. Veimau currently runs a Pacific Islander cultural group with his wife and San Diego State University's Pacific Islander Student Association.``My vision for every student is to discover who they are and to be intentional about their dreams and passions,'' Veimau said. ``Our Pacific Islander roots keep us grounded.
