In Aedrin Albright's civics class at Chatham Central High School, the students are getting a real-life lesson in politics.The Bear Creek, North Carolina 10th graders are studying the impeachment process. And as their representatives hear testimony against President Donald Trump in Washington, they are debating whether he should face removal from office."Your job is to try to persuade your classmates in here to come to your side, to your understanding," Albright says to her class. "To see how you see this impeachment process."Earlier this week, the students divided into groups: Pro-impeachment on the right, anti-impeachment on the left, and "I Don't Know" in the middle. The pro-Trump group was by far the largest."I don't think it's my job as a teacher to influence them politically," Albright says. "I think it's my job to teach them the two sides, or the three sides or the four sides. So, it's not my job to say, `Yes, he should be impeached.' I've had them, probably, eight or nine times, 10 times: `What do you think?' And it's like, What do YOU think? And so it's, you know, I want them to tell me instead of me telling them."Bryce Hammer thinks the process is rigged and that Democrats are simply looking for any excuse to oust the Republican president."The Democrats have just been slamming Trump and trying to find every little thing, ever since he got into office," Hammer says. "Just to try and get a reason just to kick him out and impeach him."Classmate Landon Hackney says President Trump's request for his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate Democrat Joe Biden and son Hunter Biden was just Trump doing his job."He was just doing his job," Hackney says. "Do you want him to not talk to other nations?"But pro-impeachment supporter Francisco Morales noted that Trump made the call to Ukraine just a day after a special prosecutor declined to charge him with seeking foreign help in the 2016 election."He's accused of asking foreign help to interfere with elections," Morales says.Emma Preston sat in the middle, but thinks the impeachment is a waste of time and money so close to the election. "There shouldn't be an impeachment process going on when there's about to be a re-election," Preston says.But Makizah Cotton says the framers included impeachment in the Constitution as a way to check the power of the presidency, and that questions should be investigated."I think that we shouldn't let anything go," Cotton says. "And that's with any president."Before the class was over, three students had moved from undecided to anti-impeachment. One undecided student went to join her three pro-impeachment classmates.Albright has been teaching civics for 18 years. In the latest numbers from the Department of Veterans Affairs, former military members are committing suicide at a rate of 17 a day. “If it were 17 a month, I think that would be a crisis but we’re saying 17 a day,” said Shad Meshad.Meshad created the National Veterans Foundation (NVF) and the first ever veteran suicide hotline in the country. He’s been running it for more than three decades, helping thousands of veterans.About a year ago, he helped Marine Corps Veteran Mario Miramontes, who was once on the brink of taking his own life.“It was accepting that I am not a part of this big machine,” said Miramontes. “It was just me, my family, my kids and I didn’t have any back up.”Like many veterans, Miramontes was struggling with transitioning out of the military.Being a Marine felt like the highest honor in his life. It gave him purpose and then it was gone.“Nothing has really replaced that sense of service,” Miramontes explained.Miramontes struggled with that for a decade after leaving the Marines, but what took him to the point of suicide was feeling like his service and sacrifice was so easily forgotten by society. He says he found himself cleaning fish and being called racial slurs after returning to civilian life.Veteran suicide hotlines get more than 1,000 calls a day, some estimate more than 2,000 calls a day, from servicemembers in the same kind of dark place Miramontes was at.“We have today an epidemic, an epidemic of suicide,” said Meshad.Meshad is also a veteran, he served in the Army during Vietnam. It was that service and what he saw there that made him realize that the rest of his life would be helping veterans overcome the mental and invincible wounds of war.“When I was in Vietnam, as a mental health officer actually, I was very aware we were going to have problems coming back,” explained Meshad.Despite Meshad’s efforts over the last 50 years, it just doesn’t seem like the number of veterans needing help is shrinking.“When soldiers are getting ready to come out of the service from war or even without going to war, there needs to be at least six months of training on how to come out,” Meshad said. “Not only six months preparation but another six months of people like us to let them know things are going to go this way or that way and this way. It’s okay, it’s normal.”Support is critical to preventing suicide amongst veterans, just ask Miramontes with support from Meshad and his fellow veterans at NVF, he is in a better place mentally. In fact, he is currently working for NVF, answering calls on the suicide hotline with the hope of saving other veterans from taking their life. 2647

INDIANAPOLIS — "I didn't know what to think. I was still in shock like how did the fire even happen?"Rachel McRee was in the restroom when she heard a loud explosion come from the kitchen where her boyfriend, Raveen Sugantheraj, had been cooking. "We didn't even realize that he had been burned," McRee said. The kitchen was on fire. So our first priority was putting that out."Once the couple finally put the fire out near the stove top, they realized that Sugantheraj had been severely burned. "It's his arms, his face, his neck, his hands, his ear," McRee said. "I feel terrible for him and the pain that he's in. I just feel horrible, you know, he's in so much pain," she said. "I've watched him get his bandage changed. He's got raw skin. It's like ten to 15 percent of his body that's just burnt off."Sugantheraj was in the hospital undergoing surgery on Friday."They're having to do skin grafts, severe ones. One is going to be pigskin, one's going to be his own skin," Sugantheraj's girlfriend said. She is not sure of his recovery time. The cause of the fire? A can of Pam cooking spray kept too close to open flames. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart... He had no idea - I had no idea," McRee said. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The medical director in Eskenazi's emergency department, Dr. Tyler Stepsis, said aerosol bottles like Pam make oils even more flammable. She said that this is a common occurrence. "You not only have the thing your aerosolizing but you also have the propellant. And the propellant a lot of times is what can catch fire," Dr. Stepsis said. As a warning: "When you set it down, don't put it by your stove, put it very far away because I don't want this to happen to anybody else," McRee said. Doctors say, bottom line, know what you're cooking with and keep it a safe distance from flames. Just a month after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, retailer Charlotte Russe has announced they will close all stores and the company has officially closed its online store as well."Our online store has closed, going out of business, sale starts March 7, all stores, all sales final," a message on the company's website said.The going out of business sale starts March 7 at all Charlotte Russe locations. According to its store locator, the company operates more than 650 stores in the US.In February, the company announced their plans to close nearly 100 of their stores.
