MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Attorneys for the family of George Floyd announced Wednesday that they’ve filed a lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and the four officers involved in the 46-year-old’s death on Memorial Day.Watch the attorneys press conference below:The federal lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. It names the city and former officers Derek Chauvin, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng as the defendants in the case.The lawsuit claims the city is responsible for a police culture of excessive force, racism and impunity.The complaint is seeking compensatory and special damages and costs as defined under federal law in an amount to be determined by a jury. The suit is also asking for the appointment of a receiver or similar authority to ensure that the City of Minneapolis properly trains and supervises its police officers.Floyd died in police custody the night of May 25 after former officer Chauvin pressed his knee against the handcuffed man’s neck for several minutes while he said, “I can’t breathe.” The incident was captured on video, which quickly spread online and led to worldwide protests with activists calling for justice and racial equality.“This complaint shows what we have said all along, that Mr. Floyd died because the weight of the entire Minneapolis Police Department was on his neck,” said attorney Ben Crump in a press release. “The City of Minneapolis has a history of policies, procedures and deliberate indifference that violates the rights of arrestees, particularly Black men, and highlights the need for officer training and discipline. This is an unprecedented case, and with this lawsuit we seek to set a precedent that makes it financially prohibitive for police to wrongfully kill marginalized people -- especially Black people -- in the future.”Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. Three other officers at the scene —Thao, Lane, and Kueng — are charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.“The Floyd family deserves justice for the inhumane way in which officers with the Minneapolis Police Department killed Mr. Floyd,” said attorney L. Chris Stewart. “Furthermore, the City has a responsibility to acknowledge the history and practices of excessive force and impunity with its police force, as well as shortfalls in officer training and discipline.”The complaint claims that the police department knows prone restraint can be deadly, and that its officers were supposed to receive appropriate training, but it had inconsistent policies and infrequent training to educate officers.The complaint states that MPD training to all officers designated and approved neck restraints as a “non-deadly force” option and encouraged officers to “compress veins, arteries nerves, and muscles of the neck” of arrestees. 2899

Now, it wants to prove that it can sustainably fly around the planet's thin atmosphere at low altitude -- with a tiny helicopter.NASA announced Friday it will send the Mars Helicopter to the Red Planet with the previously announced Mars 2020 rover, set to launch in two years from Florida.The hope is that aircraft like this one -- flying mechanical scouts -- will eventually give scientists another vantage point from which to observe Mars.The helicopter will be mankind's first attempt to fly a heavier-than-air craft -- think helicopter or airplane -- in an atmosphere other than Earth's, the space agency said.Its mission will be to take five test flights after it lands with the rover in February 2021. 839

More than 80 people were arrested after a third night of demonstrations in St. Louis over the acquittal of a former police officer who had been charged with first-degree murder.Arrests came after police officers were assaulted and "a concentrated area" was hit with vandalism including broken windows, broken sidewalk flower pots and overturned trash cans, acting Police Commissioner Larry O'Toole told media at a briefing late Sunday."Some criminals assaulted law enforcement officers and threw chemicals and rocks at them. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The re-energized racial justice movement has brought to light more systemic disparities, especially in criminal justice reform.“What we are saying is we have to have a system that does not prejudice people due to their poverty,” said Jared Mollenkof, an executive board member of the Minnesota Freedom Fund. “In reality, if you have enough money, you will always get out.”The Minnesota Freedom Fund started in 2016 as a small operation dedicated to ending cash bail systems. They helped bail out about 67 people last year.Following demonstrations set off by George Floyd's killing, donations started flooding in to help get protesters out of jail. Just since May, they've now bailed out at least ninety people.People all over the world, about 1 million individuals, have donated some million.“We have criminalized everything. We arrest people for bull**** and then we try to force it all through a system that would not be able to keep up, but for the fact that it leaves all these people in cages and counts on the fact that people want to get home,” said Mollenkof.The Minnesota Freedom Fund says getting people out pre-trial now, with COVID-19, is even more important.It says in the past, a third of people it has bailed out have had their cases dismissed.People are less likely to plead guilty when they're not held in custody. National leaders are launching an investigation into nursing homes and how they are handling the coronavirus crisis, specifically asking how they spent federal funds during the pandemic and their efforts to prevent further infections.Letters seeking information were sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency that oversees nursing homes, as well as the five largest for-profit nursing home companies in the country.
