AZUSA (CNS) - A homeless man suspected of intentionally starting the Ranch 2 Fire in Azusa surrendered to authorities Sunday, while firefighters endured another day battling the blaze amid scorching temperatures.The fire, which grew to 2,256 acres overnight, was just 7% contained Sunday.The man suspected of intentionally starting the fire, 36-year-old Osmin Palencia, was in custody at the Azusa Police Department jail. Police did not release further information except to say that the investigation was still active, and urged anyone with information about the fire's origin to call 626- 812-3200.On Saturday, police said Palencia was believed to have a connection to the Monrovia area and possibly a woman known as "Madonna Ortiz." They added he is violent and has multiple active arrest warrants.Palencia also had four misdemeanor arrests over the last two years, three by Azusa police and one by sheriff's deputies, according to jail records.Palencia's last known residence is an encampment in the Azusa Canyon Riverbed, police said.A witness who lives in a riverbed near Mountain Cove told NBC4 an argument between two homeless men sparked the fire."There were two gentlemen in the back (of a homeless encampment) fighting and they were arguing over a bike and one guy said he'd burn the other guy out, and things got escalated to where the fire started," evacuee Jimmy Pockets told the station. As the world sputters amid a global coronavirus pandemic that may have originated from bats in China, researchers released a study on Monday indicating that pigs could transmit a pandemic-level flu strain to humans.The Chinese and British based researchers, who published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, said that G4 EA H1N1 viruses in pigs should be closely monitored in human populations, especially among workers in the swine industry.The researchers said that pigs are intermediate hosts for the strain of influenza, which researchers are concerned could spread to humans. A further concern is that humans could spread the virus to other humans, prompting a pandemic. While the study notes that the virus had spread to workers in the swine industry, it likely has not been transmitted from humans to humans.“G4 viruses have all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus,” the team of UK researchers wrote.The researchers said G4 viruses bind to human-type receptors, produce much higher progeny virus in human airway epithelial cells, and show efficient infectivity and aerosol transmission in ferrets.While the study indicates cause for some concern, Martha Nelson, an evolutionary biologist at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center, told Science Magazine the chances of a pandemic from G4 viruses are “low,” but added that no one knew the pandemic risk of H1N1 until 2009.“Influenza can surprise us,” Nelson told Science. “And there’s a risk that we neglect influenza and other threats at this time” of COVID-19.Nelson added to Science that given the warning, it would be ideal to produce a human G4 vaccine as the world still needs to be vigilant on other pandemics besides COVID-19.Domestically, the University of Missouri reviewed the research. 1855

As the reality of a coronavirus vaccine gets closer, it appears more Americans are willing to get it. A recent survey found nearly 60 percent of respondents said they would get a vaccine for the coronavirus.The poll conducted by Gallup in late October was done before Pfizer and Moderna shared the initial results of their clinical trials showing their separate vaccines were both more than 90 percent effective against the coronavirus.Roughly 58 percent of the nearly 3,000 respondents said “yes”, they would get a vaccine. During the last four months of polling Gallup has done on this question, the lowest “yes” response rate was 50 percent of respondents in mid-September.Since then, the FDA, other health experts and the drug makers themselves have sought to clarify the testing process and offer transparency about the approval process.The latest survey results still mean roughly 42 percent of those asked would not get a coronavirus vaccine.“Four in 10 remain unwilling to get a vaccine, indicating public health officials face an uphill climb in convincing a good share of the public to do so,” the Gallup report stated.A large increase in those who said “yes” in this latest survey came from respondents in the 45-to-64 years old group. In mid-September, there was only 36 percent of this group who would get a vaccine, in October, that number had increased to 49 percent.According to the survey results, it appears those who identify as Democrats remain the most willing to get a vaccine and increased the most in the latest survey, compared with those who identify as Republican remaining below 50 percent “yes” through the entire four months of Gallup’s polling.In the latest survey from late October, 69 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans would get the vaccine. In September, only 53 percent of Democrats said “yes.”As for reasons people gave for not wanting to take a coronavirus vaccine, Republicans were split among various answers; 26 percent were concerned about a rushed timeline, 20 percent don’t trust vaccines generally, 19 percent want to wait to confirm the vaccine is safe, and 22 percent said there were other reasons.Meanwhile, more than half of the Democrats who would not take a vaccine said it was because of concerns about a rushed timeline and they want to wait to confirm it is safe.Pfizer and Moderna have said tens of millions of doses of their vaccines could be available by the end of the year once they get the “go ahead” from the FDA. 2498
