Britain's aviation authority is banning all commercial Boeing 737 MAX passenger flights from UK airspace, following Sunday's fatal plane crash in Ethiopia."We have, as a precautionary measure, issued instructions to stop any commercial passenger flights from any operator arriving, departing or overflying UK airspace," the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said in a statement.Earlier on Tuesday, aviation authorities in Singapore, Australia, Malaysia and Oman temporarily suspended Boeing 737 MAX services after Sunday's MAX 8 flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi reported technical problems and asked for permission to turn back, before crashing into a field six minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board. Investigations are taking place into the cause of the crash. This is the second time in less than six months that this model has crashed soon after taking off. A new Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight went down over the Java Sea off Indonesia last October, killing 189 people."Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the tragic incident in Ethiopia on Sunday," a CAA spokesperson said in a statement."The UK Civil Aviation Authority has been closely monitoring the situation, however, as we do not currently have sufficient information from the flight data recorder we have, as a precautionary measure, issued instructions to stop any commercial passenger flights from any operator arriving, departing or overflying UK airspace."The UK Civil Aviation Authority's safety directive will be in place until further notice."We remain in close contact with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and industry regulators globally."In a statement, Singapore's Civil Aviation Authority announced it would suspend all variants of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft from entering or leaving the city-state, a move affecting SilkAir, China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Shandong Airlines and Thai Lion Air.While no Australian airlines fly the 737 MAX, Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority said it would temporarily suspend airlines from flying all Boeing 737 MAX jets to or from Australia.Oman said on Twitter it is temporarily suspending operations of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of its airports until further notice.Malaysia announced that it would suspend the MAX 8 aircraft flying to or from and transiting the country until further notice. No Malaysian carriers currently operate the model.Airlines including Ethiopian Airlines, Aeromexico, Cayman Airways, South Africa's Comair, South Korea's Eastar Jet and Aerolíneas Argentinas and all Indonesian airlines have said they are temporarily not using the 737 MAX 8.Those decisions follow the lead of China's aviation administration, who on Monday ordered that all domestic Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets be out of the air by 6 p.m. local time, due to its principle of "zero tolerance for safety hazards."China has one of the world's largest fleets of Boeing 737 MAX 8, operating 97 of the planes, according to Chinese state-run media. The fallout has appeared to affect Boeing's bottom line. The aircraft maker's stock dropped 8% Monday, with investors voicing concerns about the 737 and 3173
AVILA BEACH, Cali. – The ocean has healing powers and for some former soldiers, it can help wash away the ugliness of war. U.S. veteran Ash Legion had a hard time transitioning to life outside the military. “For a long time, it was just a race to get blacked out,” said the former Marine Corps. Sgt.Now with the help of Operation Surf, a surf camp designed to help veterans, Legion has been able to step out of the darkness by stepping into the water. “I’m in a good place. Everybody is having a good time. Party wave!” said Legion. “It’s given me so much than I could have imagined. Honestly when I moved here, I had a wetsuit and I had no one to surf with. I had no friends. I didn’t know anybody here and then I met Dan.Dan Szentesi, lead surf instructor for Operation Surf, has spent the past seven years teaching veterans how to ride waves. “I don’t want to sound cliché, but a lot of people talk about how it saves their life,” said Szentesi.Operation Surf is now in its 10th year – and is growing, going from a weekend event once a year to now operating nearly year-round in northern, central and southern California.“Watching people catch their first wave is pretty amazing. It’s like a light goes off and people tend to feel like it’s something that they haven’t experienced before…something they’ve been missing,” said Szentesi. After finding surfing, these veterans say they can’t imagine life without it. “It’s made a big difference. I found my solace again,” said Ron Holtgrew, who was a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps.Once a week, Holtgrew drives two hours from Fresno to the central coast to get in the ocean. “I was one of those vets who didn’t think that I needed this program. I went through it and once I figured out what they were trying to do here with the healing powers of the ocean. I don’t stop coming,” said Holtgrew. The healing powers can help rinse away pain and PTSD. “It’s pretty damn close to a gun fight,” said Jordan Meyers, a U.S. veteran. “Just sheer adrenaline but you come out smiling instead of coming out kind of messed up in the head.”Operation Surf’s funding comes completely from donations and grants – investments in the sport and the soul. “As a spouse of a veteran myself, I started witnessing my husband come home, he smiled a little bit more, he laughed, he was telling me who he was surfing with how he got that epic left,” said Mackenzie Rana with Operation Surf. And finally feeling right by helping these vets transition from soldiers to civilians – and now surfers. “It’s so healing on so many levels, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, this is the healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever lives.” 2656
BUFFALO, N.Y. — It's chicken nuggets and soft pretzels on the menu at South Buffalo Charter School, but suspension is being served for some lunchroom workers. Three are seen in pictures, posted on a fourth worker's public Instagram account. They are posing on a prep table in the school cafeteria. One of the pictures shows a woman on her knees, with her feet on the table, and a peeled banana held in a phallic position. The woman who took the pictures told 7 Eyewitness News I-Team reporter Ed Drantch, "it was a joke."The pictures were anything but a joke for Dave Cervi, President of Personal Touch Food Service, a third-party vendor that is hired by the school for food service."I can't believe anyone that works in a school, with children, would even consider doing something like that. It was horrifying to us," Cervi said.Personal Touch has been under contract with South Buffalo Charter School for five years.Cervi says this is the first time he's ever dealt with something like this. He says he had the four employees surrender their school ID tags to Principal David Ehrle, and walked out of the building."Everyone has an understanding, upon being hired, this is not the type of behavior you do in general, but certainly not at a school. We don't condone it and we're here to provide a safe environment for the students," Ehrle said. The woman who took these pictures has her own children enrolled at this school. Nearly 1,000 students are enrolled. The pictures were posted four days ago on the worker's public Instagram account. They have since been taken down and the account made private. That was only after the 7 Eyewitness News I-Team spoke to the worker on the phone and before she and her three co-workers were suspended.Personal Touch Food Service says they will not be back until at least next week, when the internal investigation is completed. 1884
