CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A documentary filmmaker is focusing his lens on migrants in Tijuana, hoping to show what life is like for migrants waiting to enter the U.S."Stuck in Tijuana" shows the crisis around the migrant shelters, where filmmaker Charlie Minn says he found a humanitarian crisis."I think we've all been there in life, at one point or another where we ask for something, a job, a relationship, a school, a career," Minn says. "The migrants are asking for acceptance."Minn says he found one shelter where 1,000 people were sharing one bathroom. In other areas he found children living without their parents.He adds that Tijuana's new reputation as the murder capital of the world makes things even more dangerous for migrants in the shelters.Minn spent the last week visiting college classes around San Diego to show the documentary to students. He hopes to inspire them to fight for change.This is Minn's third documentary focused on the San Diego/Tijuana border region. His first one, "Mexico's Bravest Man," profiled a police chief in Tijuana who survivied eight assasination attempts. The next movie, "77 Minutes," examined the 1984 shooting massacre in a San Ysidro McDonald's.Minn says he's captivated by the border in this area, because it's unlike any other region in the US.The movie will premiere Friday, March 22nd at the Theater Box in downtown San Diego. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-of-the-art hospital is nearly complete in the South Bay. The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is expanding, adding a seven-story hospital to the current facility. "I think this is just everything for this community, right now we're really the only ones investing down here in the South Bay, in Chula Vista," says Matt Teichner, Sharp Chula Vista Senior Project Manager."Everyone who comes in here gets seen regardless of your ability to pay, we see people from both sides of the border here, and we are just full to the brim every day right now."It will be the first new hospital in San Diego's South Bay in more than 40 years.Planners say patient safety and infection control was the number one factor when designing the new hospital. The new hospital features advanced operating rooms as well as innovative technologies. The new hospital is Sharp HealthCare's largest single investment to-date at 4 million.Construction is scheduled to be complete by August and then a grand opening a few months later. 1054

(KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said. "(Charleston church shooter) Dylan Roof and many others. Are we referring to others by their religion? If not, then why are we singling out this community and referring to them by their religion."Gastelum is running against Incumbent Mary Salas, teacher Arthur Kende, and Parks Supervisor Daniel Schreck for the seat. The top two vote-getters in June move on to a November runoff. Gastelum's campaign statement has no anti-Muslim comments. Instead, it talks about cutting taxes, eliminating Chula Vista's welcoming city program, and bringing Amazon back to the table to put its headquarters here. The Otay Water District board censured Gastelum last year. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. In the meantime, the district is still offering meal distribution while students are out of school. 1438

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of neighbors in Eastlake are using social media to support each other during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jason Anderson created the Facebook page called 'Eastlake - Support COVID-19'. He got the idea after seeing another post on social media. He initially created the group to make sure children staying home from school wouldn't go hungry. The group is now being used for community members to find things like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and food. Nothing on the group is for sale, Anderson says neighbors are just helping each other by paying it forward. The group has grown to over 800 members in just three days. The leaders of the group are hosting regular conference calls to plan and stay organized. The group is now brainstorming how to best help elderly members in the community since they might not be as social media savvy.
