BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Friday that 34.29 million students graduated from the country's higher-learning institutions between 2006 and 2010.Xu Mei, the ministry's spokeswoman, said the number is even more than that of the graduates in the 20 years prior to 2006 combined."During the 11th five-year plan period (2006-2010), higher education has become even more accessible to the general public. GUIYANG, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for providing more support to the country's less developed regions, saying priority should be placed on improving the people's livelihood.He made the remarks during an inspection tour to Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Guiyang City in southwest China's Guizhou Province from Feb. 11 to 13, according to an official statement Xinhua received Sunday.Li said more attention should be directed to improve people's living standards as China is making efforts to achieve its strategic goals of development.During his tour, Li visited some residents' homes at a poor village in Libo County of Qiannan.He called for greater efforts to improve people's livelihood, a step which would help boost domestic demand and facilitate the transformation of the nation's economic growth mode.Li urged local authorities to work well on the safety of drinking water, road construction in rural areas, and the remodeling of old houses. HAIKOU, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities on Friday started to allow helicopters to fly in low-altitude airspace over the tourist island of Hainan on a trial basis for the first time. The aim is to eventually open a part of the country's tightly-controlled airspace to private aircraft.Four helicopters were manned by eight pilots from Shanghai-based Zhengyang Investment Group, a leading domestic firm in the general aviation industry. They are expected to conduct test flights in the sky, 1,000 meters above the ground in Hainan in the next two months.The flight test will collect data for low-altitude flying and test the ground control system's response to emergencies, said Zou Jianming, chairman of Zhengyang Investment Group.Hainan is the first place in China to conduct test flights of private aircraft in low-altitude airspace, said Jiang Sixian, deputy governor of the province. Domestic and foreign firms are both welcome to invest in Hainan's general aviation sector to develop world-class tourism here.China's low-altitude airspace is controlled by the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Every private aircraft flight needs approval, and the procedure can take from one day up to a week.But last November, the State Council and the Central Military Commission said that part of the low-altitude airspace would be opened to promote the country's general aviation sector, including the purchase and use of private planes.General aviation refers to the part of the aviation industry that excludes flights for military, law enforcement and public transport. China has only 900 aircraft, 80 airports and fewer than 10,000 pilots in the general aviation segment.The market for general aviation in China is valued at only 13 billion yuan (1.98 billion U.S. dollars) but is expected to grow by 15 percent annually until 2020, Hainan aviation officials said.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- A plane carrying Chinese nationals who were stranded in Egypt arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport Tuesday afternoon.The plane, operated by the Air China International Corporation, arrived in Beijing at 16:50 p.m. Bejing time. The second plane, operated by Hainan Airlines, will arrive in south China's Guangzhou city later Tuesday.The two planes carry a total of 480 Chinese nationals."China has attached great importance to safety of the stranded Chinese nationals since demonstrations and protests broke out in Egypt on Jan. 28," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular news briefing.Hong said China has taken a package of emergency measures including warning against travel and an around-the-clock hotline to provide consular protection and assistance for the Chinese nationals.The spokesman said that a working taskforce, composed of officials from China's Foreign Ministry, National Tourism Administration, Ministry of Public Security and Civil Aviation Administration, are currently working with the Chinese embassy in Cairo to provide assistance to stranded Chinese in Egypt and to try to facilitate their early return to China.
