AVILA BEACH, Cali. – The ocean has healing powers and for some former soldiers, it can help wash away the ugliness of war. U.S. veteran Ash Legion had a hard time transitioning to life outside the military. “For a long time, it was just a race to get blacked out,” said the former Marine Corps. Sgt.Now with the help of Operation Surf, a surf camp designed to help veterans, Legion has been able to step out of the darkness by stepping into the water. “I’m in a good place. Everybody is having a good time. Party wave!” said Legion. “It’s given me so much than I could have imagined. Honestly when I moved here, I had a wetsuit and I had no one to surf with. I had no friends. I didn’t know anybody here and then I met Dan.Dan Szentesi, lead surf instructor for Operation Surf, has spent the past seven years teaching veterans how to ride waves. “I don’t want to sound cliché, but a lot of people talk about how it saves their life,” said Szentesi.Operation Surf is now in its 10th year – and is growing, going from a weekend event once a year to now operating nearly year-round in northern, central and southern California.“Watching people catch their first wave is pretty amazing. It’s like a light goes off and people tend to feel like it’s something that they haven’t experienced before…something they’ve been missing,” said Szentesi. After finding surfing, these veterans say they can’t imagine life without it. “It’s made a big difference. I found my solace again,” said Ron Holtgrew, who was a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps.Once a week, Holtgrew drives two hours from Fresno to the central coast to get in the ocean. “I was one of those vets who didn’t think that I needed this program. I went through it and once I figured out what they were trying to do here with the healing powers of the ocean. I don’t stop coming,” said Holtgrew. The healing powers can help rinse away pain and PTSD. “It’s pretty damn close to a gun fight,” said Jordan Meyers, a U.S. veteran. “Just sheer adrenaline but you come out smiling instead of coming out kind of messed up in the head.”Operation Surf’s funding comes completely from donations and grants – investments in the sport and the soul. “As a spouse of a veteran myself, I started witnessing my husband come home, he smiled a little bit more, he laughed, he was telling me who he was surfing with how he got that epic left,” said Mackenzie Rana with Operation Surf.And finally feeling right by helping these vets transition from soldiers to civilians – and now surfers. “It’s so healing on so many levels, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, this is the healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever lives.” 2656

As part of a National Park, the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge in Williamson County, Tennessee is a beautiful architectural sight for many. But for some, it’s become a place of pain and grief.“I lost my sister, who was 25, to suicide at the bridge,” Sarah Elmer says.Trish Merelo shares Elmer's grief. She, too, lost a family member to suicide. “I lost my 17-year-old son,” she says.Now, Elmer and Merelo have come together over a mutual understanding of how it feels to lose somebody who has died by suicide.“Seeing what a young suicide does to a school, and to a community, and to a neighborhood, and to a family, it’s unimaginable grief,” Merelo says. Merelo’s son, John, was a senior in high school. He was academically gifted and in marching band. His mom describes him as somebody whose heart would make a difference in this world.Elmer’s sister, Danielle, was a mother of two. Elmer describes her sister as smart, caring, and a big mental health advocate.“Now that’s she’s gone, I just don’t have my other half,” she says. The two women are now doing everything they can to prevent other families from feeling the same sorrow. Together, they’ve formed the Natchez Trace Bridge Barrier Coalition.“Ultimately, what stops bridge suicides is a physical structure,” Merelo says. Their goal is to create an 8-foot barrier on the bridge, so it’s not so easy for someone to jump. Until then, they’re thankful for the new call boxes that were recently planted on the bridge by the National Park Service. The call boxes offer a direct line to 911 and the Tennessee crisis number.“I think the crisis line is more for someone who is in that place and needs that counseling," Merelo says. "I think 911 is for them too, but that’s also for bystanders who see someone in trouble and want to get authorities here."With barely any cell service in the area, the women say the call boxes are essential, and they hope they’ll make a big difference for people in need. “If that call box saves one life, then it is worth it,” Elmer says. Letting somebody know they’re loved and cared for is a critical message everyone needs to hear. On the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, you can pick up the phone for support. BALTIMORE — After three months of investigating, Baltimore Police revealed a startling update on the murder of Jacquelyn Smith, which had family members asking the question, "why?"Sunday afternoon, acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison announced the crime was staged and that Jacquelyn Smith's husband, Keith Smith, 52, and his 28-year-old daughter Valeria Shavon Smith had been charged with her murder.Harrison said police in Texas arrested the two Sunday morning near the U.S.-Mexico border after word got around they were trying to leave the country. "During the course of our investigation, we developed evidence that Mr. Smith was leaving Maryland," Harrison said Sunday. An autopsy report released Friday has revealed the cause of death of the 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who died after being taken into US Customs and Border Protection custody late last year.Jakelin Caal Maquin died from a bacterial infection known as streptococcal sepsis, according to the autopsy report from the medical examiner's office in El Paso County, Texas. The report says streptococcus bacteria was found in the girl's lungs, adrenal gland, liver and spleen. It goes on to say the infection was "rapidly progressive," which led to "multiple organ dysfunction and death."Jakelin died in December, two days after she and her father, Nery Gilberto Caal, 29, were detained by US Customs and Border Protection.The law offices of Lynn Coyle, who represents Jakelin's family, released a statement saying it will continue to ask for an independent investigation of her death."While the report sheds light on Jakelin's cause of death, it still leaves many questions that require further review," the statement said. "The report's findings suggest that Jakelin's chances of surviving would have been improved with earlier medical intervention.
