(AP) — A father and his two children helped rescue a man who was stranded in the Santa Fe National Forest for 14 days.John Utsey launched an unexpected two-day rescue mission Saturday after hearing a call for help while hiking with his kids toward the Santa Fe Baldy.Utsey gave the man food and water before hiking back to the trailhead to call 911.Santa Fe firefighters arrived within the hour, but called off the unsuccessful search after eight hours.Utsey then returned to the spot Sunday, called 911 again and led crews to the man.Once the man was located, the Santa Fe Fire Department says its crews built a fire to bring up his body temperature, which was dangerously low. They also fed and gave him water.The department says the man suffered from chronic back pain, injured his back while hiking and couldn’t stand or walk.The man told first responders that his gear stolen and ended up getting lost and disoriented.The man is now recovering at a local hospital. 992

(CNS) -- Orange County Jail inmates suing the county for a variety of issues related to their housing filed a motion Thursday demanding an improvement in their meals, a resumption of visits and access to religious services, all of which have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.Orange County Jail inmates recently conducted a short-lived hunger strike as they demanded a resumption of hot meals, which were restored for a short time at some jails."Presently, most prisoners except those in Theo Lacy, get soybean mystery meat (baloney) sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner," the motion reads."This food is inedible and must be supplemented with snacks from the commissary. Those who cannot afford snacks go hungry."A GoFundMe campaign is raising money for inmates to buy snacks from the commissary, according to the motion.The litigation also alleges that inmates are receiving the wrong Jewish diets, including sandwiches during Passover when they are not allowed to eat bread.Visits from family have been suspended since March and the inmates demand that something to be done to provide some sort of visits that could be done under the state's social distancing guidelines.The litigation also complains of a restriction on religious visits or services.Inmate Kendall Cole, who has been in custody since 2016, said in a declaration said he used to receive Kosher meals, "but I am now served 'Halal' meals. That is a different religious diet. I am Jewish and need Kosher meals."Cole said he recently testified that jail guards gave him a weapon and was instructed to attack Joshua Waring, the son of a former "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member, who recently was released from jail following a plea deal for attempted murder.Cole said he was sentenced to 15 days "in the hole" in connection with the attack and that legal materials he received through the law library were "confiscated" along with his "religious head covering (Kippah) and my Jewish calendar."Cole said he was "housed with Joshua Waring when the guards shot a pepper ball into our room. This caused choking and tearing to the dozen or so prisoners even though we were in our housing units. The guards threatened us and told us not to say anything to the investigators. We did not say anything because we feared these threats. We all know of the subsequent attacks on Joshua Waring."Waring is a plaintiff in the litigation.The Orange County Sheriff's Department issued this statement regarding the allegations:"Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the sheriff's department has worked closely with the Board of State and Community Corrections and the Orange County Health Care Agency to meet all health and safety guidelines for inmates and staff, as required by law. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco's iconic Cliff House restaurant that for more than a century has served tourists and locals from atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean is closing its doors at the end of the year.Restaurant proprietors Dan and Mary Hountalas say in a post on the restaurant's website they are closing Dec. 31 because of losses brought on by the pandemic and not being able to renew a long-term operating contract with the National Park Service.They have been the restaurant's proprietors since 1973.The couple says 180 employees will lose their jobs. 581

SANTA ANA (CNS) - An Orange County pastor is due in a Santa Ana courtroom Monday on felony charges of molesting seven children ages 5 to 15.John Rodgers McFarland, who has been the head pastor at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church in Fullerton since 2014, was arrested on a warrant Thursday charging him with seven counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor younger than 14 and four counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor 14 to 15 years old.The 56-year-old Fullerton resident is accused of molesting the children between 2003 and 2017, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.McFarland, who's being held in the Orange County Jail in lieu of million bail, faces up to 179 years to life in prison if convicted, prosecutors said.RELATED: Pastor arrested by Escondido Police on suspicion of child molestationIn San Diego County, McFarland was arrested and charged in December with molesting a girl younger than 14 in Escondido between 2012 and 2013.
