SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- Janessa Goldbeck's medals from her time serving in the Marines stand inside her campaign headquarters, which also doubles as the garage in her Talmadge-area home. "It really shaped how I look at what our government's role is in our society and who's looking out for people who don't have anyone else to look out for them," she said of her military service. Goldbeck, a Democrat, has been a relative unknown in the race to replace retiring Congresswoman Susan Davis in the 53rd Congressional District. In fact, she polled at just 2 percent in the 10News Union-Tribune scientific poll released Feb. 4. The district is heavily Democratic, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans nearly two-to-one in voter registration. That's why most headlines are going to Democrats with more backing and money - Sara Jacobs, who held posts in Obama's state department, and City Council President Georgette Gomez, who has the endorsement of the California Democratic Party. Jacobs lead the pack at 23 percent in the Feb. 4 poll, with Republican Chris Stoddard in second place at 10 percent. Gomez polled at 5 percent. The top two votegetters March 3, regardless of party, move on to the November general election. "We're just going nose to the grindstone, trying to get that message out to voters," Goldbeck said. Goldbeck's message got a big microphone over the weekend, when the Union-Tribune endorsed her over all others. The editorial board acknowledged her service and called her interview one of the most impressive this campaign season. "Goldbeck would be a refreshing, assured, morally corageous voice on Capitol Hill," the editorial said. Goldbeck, a San Diego native, said she screamed when she heard she got the endorsement. After all, the Union-Tribune editorial board said it almost didn't call for an interview, given her well-known opponents. "To be honest, we were stunned," she said of earning the endorsement. While newspaper circulation is down nationwide, the U-T gave Goldbeck an introduction to an audience she may not have been able to reach on her own. Bill Celis, an associate professor of journalism at USC Annenberg, said people still look to newspapers for reasoned guidance on important issues and candidates. "I think an endorsement from a highly read newspaper for a candidate that doesn't have a lot of campaign dollars is enormous," he said. As of Dec. 31, Goldbeck had raised a little more than 0,000. Jacobs had nearly million, while Gomez had more than 0,000. 2518

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A military judge on Monday took the rare step of removing a prosecutor accused of misconduct from the war crimes case of a decorated Navy SEAL.Capt. Aaron Rugh ordered Cmdr. Christopher Czaplak removed from the case of Operations Chief Edward Gallagher after defense lawyers accused the prosecution of spying on their emails, according to the ruling. The defense asked Rugh to dismiss the case or remove prosecutors because of a surreptitious effort to track defense emails without court approval in an effort to find the source of news leaks.Rugh said it was not in his power to determine prosecutorial misconduct, but there was the possibility of a conflict of interest that required Czaplak to be removed, the ruling said.Rugh has not yet ruled on whether to dismiss murder and attempted murder counts against Gallagher.Last week, Rugh unexpectedly released Gallagher from custody as a remedy for interference by prosecutors. The removal could delay the trial scheduled to start June 10.Republicans in Congress have rallied in support of Gallagher, saying he has been mistreated. President Donald Trump, who intervened to move Gallagher to better confinement, has considered dismissing the charges.Gallagher pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of an injured teenage militant in Iraq in 2017 and to attempted murder for picking off two civilians from a sniper's perch. It is extremely unusual for a military judge to remove the prosecution or dismiss a case only days before the start of a trial. The military justice system has gotten few war crime convictions and been criticized for being ineffective.Gallagher's lawyers condemned the prosecution for embedding tracking code in emails sent to them and a journalist to find the source of news leaks. At hearings last week, Rugh indicated he was misled about the effort. He said investigators told him privately they planned to embed code in what he believed to be a court document to help them find the source of leaks but the judge said he didn't have the power to authorize such a tactic and wasn't told they planned to target emails sent to the defense lawyers or a journalist. 2161

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The death toll from the wildfires raging on the West Coast stands at least 33, with authorities saying nearly all of the dozens of people reported missing after a devastating blaze in southern Oregon have been accounted for. The flames have destroyed neighborhoods, leaving a barren, gray landscape in their wake, driven tens of thousands of people from their homes and cast a shroud of smoke over the region. The crisis has come amid the coronavirus outbreak, the economic downturn and nationwide racial unrest that has led to protests in Portland for more than 100 days. 599
