SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With COVID-19 cases surging again across California, friends of a local, single dad diagnosed with coronavirus are rallying to support him.Alfredo Huerta, 53, who lives in Linda Vista, first started feeling sick in early November. His first symptom was shortness of breath, which he initially blamed on his asthma."He then feeling started feeling joint pain, his whole body ached and continued to worse. Then he got a fever," said his friend Alana Hoang.Hoang says two Fridays ago, while Huerta was waiting in his primary care doctors office, his conditions worsened."Shortness of breath got worse. He couldn't breathe ... He ended up in the ER," said Hoang.There, Huerta tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted."He was very scared. He didn't want his kids to have to go through something so traumatic again, like they did with their mother," said Hoang.Huerta, a father of four - two adult children and two teens - lost his wife Sara nearly five years ago to cancer.Alone in the hospital, his thoughts turned to his children."He was afraid he wasn't going to be there for them, so he started thinking the worst," said Huerta.Meanwhile, Hoang started a Gofundme campaign to help the man she says is "part of the family."Huerta, a gardener, has been working with her for 15 years."He is just so kind and gives of himself. He works harder than anyone I've know. We just pray every day he can go back to his normal," said Hoang.This weekend, the news she was waiting for: Huerta was released. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran.While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While face masks are required for everyone at San Diego International Airport, Southwest Airlines is taking it a step further.The airline said they are now requiring all passengers to don a face mask for the safety of crew members and other travelers.Southwest’s policy, which took effect Monday, has one exception -- children under the age of 2 will not have to wear a face covering.In a statement, Southwest said, in part: “If a customer is unable to wear a face covering or mask for any reason, Southwest regrets that will be unable to transport the individual. In those cases, Southwest hopes the customer will allow them to welcome them onboard in the future, if public health guidance, or other safety related circumstances regarding face coverings changes.”Before this, Southwest had already stepped up the cleaning and disinfecting of their planes. The airline is also booking a limited number of people on board.They’re also using HEPA air filters to circulate air through the cabin on every flight. Southwest said these specialized air filters are similar to the technology found in hospitals.On Wednesday, American Airlines will join Southwest and implement the same face covering requirement. 1232

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tuesday marked the the 10-year anniversary of one of the most chilling murders in the history of San Diego County.Chelsea King, 17, was raped and murdered by a registered sex offender as she was out for jog around Lake Hodges in 2010.Today, her family launched a nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy" that will work to protect children.RELATED: A decade later, remembering Chelsea King and Amber DuboisLife changed for Brent King and his wife Kelly a decade ago. Their only daughter was missing out for a run then, nowhere to be found."You can't breathe. Your whole body is shaking, your chest is as tight as it's ever been," Brent King said. "You can't be in enough places at once. Every horrible thought is running through your mind as to whats happening … you know ... Where's my little girl?"After five excruciating days came the most brutal news of all. Chelsea's body was found buried in brush along the banks of Lake Hodges. "The hardest memory I have is the day that Sheriff Johnson pulled me aside and told me what had happened. And I then shared that with Kelly and Tyler," King said. "That was the hardest moment for me of my life. To not only to understand what had happened to my little girl, but then to have to share that with the two people that I care for the most." The community came together in sadness. Within weeks thousands gathered to finish Chelsea's run. It would become an annual event for the next eight years. The King family established the Chelsea's Light Foundation. To date, it's awarded over 0,000 in scholarships to local students. California lawmakers passed Chelsea's Law, which established stricter penalties for sex crimes against children.But the Kings aren't done. They're launching an organization called Protect the Joy to work on passing legislation to protect children across the country."[It's] really an umbrella organization that will work on passing legislation that will protect our kids from all those things out there," King added. All those things that threaten the safety of children, everything from gun violence, opioid abuse, sexual predators, and bullying. King says the new group will work with communities to pass laws to protect children. A lofty goal, he acknowledges."Well Chelsea always tells us to go big or home. And if you are going to do something than do it right. Do it all the way," King said.King says he's learned over the course of his time grieving that he can find joy in people's eyes, in being connected with others and trusting in the good of people. But as he sets out to grow the organization, he struggles to change policy will not be his only burden."The hard days for me is when I have to attend a wedding," King said. "Those things that a dad and a mom get to do with their kids that Kelly and I don't get to do." 2841
