(CNN) -- Vice President Mike Pence made an announced trip to Iraq to visit US troops ahead of Thanksgiving, landing in the country Saturday amid violent anti-government protests.Pence visited the Al Asad Air Force Base in western Iraq, where he was greeted by the US Ambassador to Iraq and several military officers. He received a classified briefing from the commanding officer on the base and spoke by phone with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi. On the call, Pence told Mahdi that he traveled to Iraq in part to "extend gratitude to the men and women (of the US military) serving in your country," according to the TV travel pool with the vice president.Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence later served the troops a Thanksgiving lunch, with the Vice President serving turkey and Mrs. Pence handing out yams.As service members came up to them, the Pences asked each where they were from and thanked them for their service.Vice President Pence then delivered remarks to about 150 service members in a hanger. "The President and your Vice President and the American people are behind you 100%," Pence said, according to the TV travel pool.Pence told the service members that the Trump administration was "fighting to secure another pay raise for the men and women in the military," but added "we need Congress to do their jobs," the TV travel pool reported."Congress should have finished their work months ago but you know that partisan politics and endless investigations have slowed things down," Pence said, according to the pool, referring to the House impeachment proceedings into President Donald Trump and Ukraine.Pence also mentioned the 1661

"By the grace of God, He kept me from losing my mind," said Viola Burton as she sat in the lobby of the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson Monday waiting for her son. After 32 agonizing years, Viola's son, Danny, was being released from prison. "I knew in my heart that he couldn't kill nobody," she said.Anxiously waiting with Viola were attorneys Solomon Radner and Madeline Sinkovich from Excolo Law and Claudia Whitman of the National Capital Crime Assistance Network. Fifteen years ago, Danny Burton wrote a letter to Claudia, telling her about his case and that he was innocent. Claudia, who volunteers all of her time to investigate wrongful conviction cases, asked the attorneys to take a look at the case. The law team also investigated, talked to witnesses, and found a prisoner who would eventually sign an affidavit that named the real killers of the 1987 murder of Leonard Ruffin in Detroit."There was a lot of witness intimidation," said attorney Madeline Sinkovich, who added that young witnesses were mistreated by police to get statements. When a tearful Danny Burton walked out of prison, he gave his mother a long embrace. "I'm really shocked," Danny said while appearing to be in a state of disbelief. He wanted to see the rest of his family, but not everyone is still around. Danny's father died years ago from a heart attack. Viola said he just couldn't take the fact that his son was innocent but locked away. Danny's sister passed away last year. Before taking Danny to get some food - he requested McDonald's - his attorney took him to The Suit Depot in Oak Park where owner Marty Babayov, who heard about Danny's case, wanted to give him some new clothes, including suits for court. Danny now wants to help free other men he says are in prison for crimes they didn't commit. "A lot of them can't read or write to seek assistance," Danny said. Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement: 2003

A 14-hour Congressional hearing ended around 11:20 p.m. on Thursday as Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler shocked his Republican colleagues by not calling for a vote on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Nadler instead announced at the end of the hearing that he would reconvene the committee at 10 a.m. on Friday. The Republicans' ranking member on the committee, Rep. Doug Collins, called the move a "kangaroo court," as other GOP members compared Nadler to Joseph Stalin. Collins told CNN that the move to delay the vote was “the must bush league stunt I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”The hearing came to an end after the Republicans put forth five amendments to the Democrats' impeachment resolution. All five resolutions came with a round of comments by the entire committee. All five of the GOP resolutions were voted down by party-line votes. 879

A grand jury in Chicago granted an indictment of 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct on actor Jussie Smollet, who is accused of lying about being attacked in late January in Chicago, ABC News reported. The charges come in two sets, according to ABC. One set of charges involve Smollett filing a false police report, when he told officers that two attackers shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him. A second set of charges were for an interview Smollett gave to police later that day. Smollett is out on a 0,000 bond. Two men were originally arrested for the alleged attack, but were later cleared of charges after police claimed that Smollett paid the men to stage the attack. 698
