WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s a convergence of two health crises: the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and a new flu season now underway.“There’s not much flu in the northern hemisphere in the summer - but there is a lot in the southern hemisphere,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and an infectious disease critical care and emergency medicine physician.Dr. Adalja said health care professionals have observed the flu in places like Australia and New Zealand during the past several months, which could offer clues into what might be expected here as our weather gets colder.“The southern hemisphere has had a remarkable flu season mostly because it's 99% lower than what they've seen in prior years,” Dr. Adalja said. “This has to do with the fact that the social distancing that people are doing for COVID-19 also has an impact on influenza because they're both spread in the same manner.”However, the U.S. has failed to control the spread of the coronavirus, leading to fears that the country might be facing a “twindemic,” where COVID-19 and the flu collide.The one silver lining: less international travel around the world may make it harder for the flu to spread globally like it has in years past.“The point we have to continue to emphasize is we don't know for sure if we'll have a light flu season and we have to prepare for one that's severe,” Dr. Adalja said.So far, the coronavirus has killed more than 210,000 people in the U.S. this year. But some students are using art, and billboards, to send a message of their own. For Yoki Ogbai, the overalls she's painting are more than a school project"Our colors are red and white," Ogbai said. "So a lot of wings a lot of bows glitter all types of crazy.The overalls are her latest work of art."Art for me is like a big sense of release," Ogbai said.Born in East Africa, she used art as expression when she moved to the U.S and a way for people to see her for who she is."A lot of times people don't really try to understand and don't really try to get to know a person before creating their onw ways," Ogbai said. "Their own idea of who you are."So when she heard about a contest called the "Healing As One" campaign, she figured it would be an opportunity to inspire thousands to take a look at things in a different way."Cause he's kind of taking a picture and was like through the lens," Ogbai said.That idea grew into a billboard on a busy intersection that reads, "See Me, I Am Denver.""To be seen is to be acknowledged for everything you are and not for what you're expected to be," Ogbai says.Ogbai's billboard is just one of several in the Healing As One initiative. The topics are timely. One reads education not deportation. And others, encourage people to have courage and hope.Albany Reynolds designed the hope billboard."For me it's amazing because I've always been someone who wanted to speak out about issues like that," Reynolds said. "And just bring attention to that."She placed the word over a picture she took of her classmate Kelly."It's giving us leeway to have artistic freedom and to put our ideas out there," Reynolds said. "And to say I want to represent hope and to have that on an actual billboard it's a good opportunity."In a time with young people across the country speaking out about the issues important to them, this group believes doing that through art can be just as powerful."If you look at any big historical changes throughout history art has been a very big part of that," Reynolds said."Even though I am just another person using my voice and what I know what I can do I really am able to make some sort of impact in someone’s life," Ogbai said.Inspiring change through billboards, advertising messages of a different kind. 2526

Once the rocket is in space, the fairing splits into two and falls away. Typically, it's left to plummet back to Earth where the ocean becomes its graveyard.But SpaceX wants to change that, mostly because the fairing on its Falcon 9 costs million.As Musk once put it, if "you had million in cash on a palette flying through the air, and it's going to smash into the ocean, would you try to recover it? Yes. Yes, you would."The company has quietly attempted to recapture the 43-foot-long fairing halves since at least March of 2017.At least twice, SpaceX has guided fairing halves to soft landings in the ocean, according to Musk's social media pages.But there's a problem."Once it gets into the water, it's quite damaging to the electronics and components inside the fairing," said Glenn Lightsey, a professor of aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It seems like a visit to the doctor’s office, but this high-tech checkup doesn’t involve a medical professional, but, rather, an app.“It is a completely objective measure,” said David Liu, CEO of Sonde Health.The company is the developer of an app called “Sonde One.” It’s designed to screen employees at home for potential respiratory ailments – like COVID-19 – in part, through the sound of their voice.“Speaking is one of the most complex physical things that a person can do,” Liu said. “Many parts of the body have to come together including your brain, your lips, your mouth, your lungs, your heart.”That is where the app comes in.After answering a few symptom-related questions, it prompts a person to say “ahhh,” for a set amount of time. The app then either clears the person to go into the office or notifies them and their employer that something may be amiss.“It's a biomarker, like any other, that the body produces,” Liu said. “There's data and signal in your voice that can be read and understood.”The voice analysis technology has been used before in helping screen people for depression and several studies done in the U.S., Australia and Germany show it may have merit.However, the app can’t specifically detect the coronavirus. It can pick-up if someone might have a cold, the flu or even asthma. Still, some companies are signing on.“There's a group of managers who are testing this you know on a on a daily basis right now, just so that we can learn the ins and outs of it,” said Ed McNamara, who is with the New Jersey-based software company SHI.SHI has 5,000 employees, all of whom used to go into the office. COVID-19 put a stop to that because, like millions of others, employees at SHI are working from home.“Our culture, as a company, is one that is really based on us being together and collaborating in person,” McNamara said.The company hopes that might change some time in the fall and that the app could be part of their strategy to come back.“It's one compliment of all of the other activities that we're undertaking, just to make sure that when we do come back to the office, it's in the safest possible way,” McNamara said.It is a safety that could hinge on the sound of your voice. 2245
