WASHINGTON — The government’s cybersecurity agency is expressing increased alarm about a hack of computer systems in the U.S. and around the globe that officials suspect was carried out by Russia.The cybersecurity unit of the Department of Homeland Security says the hack “poses a grave risk” to the U.S. government and state and local governments as well as critical infrastructure and private business.The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced the SolarWinds Orion vulnerability that was disclosed this week as the compromised piece of software, was not the only way that hackers were able to get into government agencies, private companies and critical infrastructures over the last several months."CISA has determined that this threat poses a grave risk to the Federal Government and state, local, tribal, and territorial governments as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations," the alert issued by the agency said. "CISA expects that removing this threat actor from compromised environments will be highly complex and challenging for organizations."The U.S. Energy Department is the latest government unit to announce they had systems compromised in the hack.The department says the impact of the hack appears to be “isolated to business networks” and "has not impacted the mission essential national security functions of the Department, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)," which manages the country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons.It’s not just government agencies, Microsoft is reporting in a blog post more than 40 customers around the world appear to have been targeted in the hack.The hack creates a fresh foreign policy problem for President Donald Trump in his final days in office.President Trump has not made public comments regarding the hack, or the government’s response to Russia or whoever may be responsible. VISTA (CNS) - A fire badly damaged a home in a Vista neighborhood early Saturday morning, a fire official said.The fire broke out around 6 a.m. at a house on Lado de Loma Drive near Phillips Street, according to Vista Deputy Fire Chief Ned Vander Pol. The neighborhood is near the Civic Center Drive exit off state Route 78.Firefighters from the Vista, San Marcos and Oceanside fire departments arrived and found smoke and flames coming out several openings in the home, including a skylight and windows on two sides of the house, Vander Pol said. The four residents -- two adults and two children -- had already evacuated by the time firefighters got to the home.It took crews about 30 minutes to knock the flames down, according to Vander Pol. The cause of the fire was under investigation and value of the damage wasn't immediately able to be determined, but the deputy fire chief said there was significant smoke and fire damage throughout the home.Vander Pol said the home didn't have working smoke detectors, but the residents told firefighters they had often practiced an escape plan -- which turned out to be useful when the fire broke out.The American Red Cross assisted the four displaced residents with temporary shelter, Vander Pol said 1256

Department of Health has released an open letter appealing to all White House staff and those attending a Sept. 26 event in the Rose Garden to seek medical advice and take a coronavirus test.The letter indicates a lack of confidence in the White House medical team’s contact tracing efforts for the virus outbreak that infected President Donald Trump, multiple senior staff members and two U.S. senators, among others.Co-signed by nine other local health departments from neighboring jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia, the letter says contact tracing on the outbreak has been insufficient and “there may be other staff and residents at risk for exposure to COVID positive individuals.”The move highlights the public health dilemma faced by Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration regarding the current outbreak.
