(KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. Nothing ever happened."The group is also calling for City Council to create a diversity committee led by people of color, for Santee Mayor John Minto to denounce the Defend East County Facebook group, and to meet with San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Christina Bavencoff.One demonstrator told ABC 10News, "our message is that minorities can be safe here. I grew up here and there is racism but there's also perks to living in Santee. The community, when they accept you, can be good. But also for minorities, to feel comfortable and to expand all of our minds and to open up about Black Lives Matter as well."In regards to counter-protesters, the demonstrator added, "We're not here for them. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The robotic car company created by Google is poised to attempt a major technological leap in California, where its vehicles will hit the roads without a human on hand to take control in emergencies.The regulatory approval announced Tuesday allows Waymo's driverless cars to cruise through California at speeds up to 65 miles per hour.The self-driving cars have traveled millions of miles on the state's roads since Waymo began as a secretive project within Google nearly a decade ago. Waymo has been giving rides to a group of volunteer passengers in Arizona in driverless cars since last year. To start, the fully autonomous cars will only give rides to Waymo's employees and confine their routes to roads in its home town of Mountain View, California, and four neighboring Silicon Valley cities — Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Palo Alto.If all goes well, Waymo will then seek volunteers who want to be transported in fully autonomous vehicles, similar to its early rider program in Arizona . (KGTV) - A well known funeral home in San Marcos wants to add on-site cremation services, but the plan is facing pushback from the community.Allen Brothers Mortuary has filed paperwork with the City of San Marcos to start the project. Meanwhile, people who live nearby have started a petition online to stop it."If this project goes forth, there are serious health risks that could affect YOU," says the petition.The County of San Diego website lists several possible emissions from crematoriums, including, "oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, oxides of sulfur, particulate matter and toxic air contaminants. Emissions of mercury are a specific concern for crematories."It also discusses rules and state laws that companies have to follow to mitigate any emissions, including secondary chambers.People who live nearby say they're worried about the impact it could have on their lives."It's a little disconcerting," says Pam Davidson, who lives in Whispering Oaks Apartments across the street from the mortuary. "There are enough toxins in our environment and around here with traffic and everything like that.""Families have kids here," says Nemai Martinez, who also lives at Whispering Oaks. "We don't know about ashes going up into the air. Plus the smell."In addition to the apartment complex, the mortuary is within steps of the San Marcos Post Office, the San Marcos Senior Center, a small shopping complex and a community park and playground.Karen Allen, the owner of Allen Brothers, says her company is aware of the concerns and wants to make sure her company works with the community.The company sent a statement to 10News that reads, "Linda Allen has heard the concerns of the community and is and has been, an avid supporter and proponent of this community. She wants to be clear that whatever she does here would only be done with the support of her community. Linda and her company have been at this location for nearly 40 years and want to continue that relationship in perpetuity. We are working with our Environmental consultants on addressing the neighbors’ concerns and evaluating whether or not those can be mitigated. We will know more once the studies have been completed." Last year, a crematorium in National City sent black smoke billowing into the air for nearly 30 minutes after a door was mistakenly left open. People in San Marcos worry something similar could happen in their city."It's definitely a concern for the whole community," says Davidson.Right now, there are no votes planned on the project as the company works through the environmental review. 2640

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV)— A Santee family is praying for recovery and justice, as their mother remains on life-support. She was the victim of a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night. 10News spoke to Richard Johnson. His mother Julie Johnson and sister in law, Jayme Morton-Johnson were the victims of the hit-and-run.According to Richard Johnson, Wednesday at around 8 pm, they heard a commotion outside their home. Johnson said Julie ran outside and saw a neighbor boy getting beaten by three teenage boys.  Julie's other son, Robert, who is also Jayme's husband, says he was making dinner when his mother called him outside because of the altercation.  Robert stepped in to help break up the fight. They, and a neighbor, were able to put an end to it, but the teens ran into the car. “(Julie) always had a heart out for people are hurt or hears somebody in need, she acts right away, and that’s what she did," Richard Johnson said of his mother. As the suspects made their get-away, they sped onto the curb, hit the women, and flung them onto the street. “Jayme rolled off the side of the car with little injury," Johnson said. "And my mom flew off the car, and the impact was deadly. “Jayme was released from the hospital Thursday."The only thing I recall is seeing that drivers eyes and him hitting us and that’s when we grabbed each other, and by no means do I see it being an accident," she said.Jayme is expected to make a full recovery. Julie Johnson was not so lucky. The impact sent her flying 40 feet. Her brain is now non-responsive. An oxygen machine is the only thing keeping her alive. San Diego County Sheriffs Department said within two hours, they found the get-away car at Sonrise Community Church just two miles south of the crash. The owner of the vehicle then turned in one of the passengers, a 16-year-old boy, who was booked into juvenile hall for Felony hit-and-run. The two other teens have not been arrested. "I just want them to turn themselves in and give justice to my mother in law," Jayme said.“An irresponsible decision can end somebody’s life," Johnson said. While Johnson and his family wait for an arrest, they also pray. They said that is the only thing that may save their matriarch."The only thing they can do is hope from God that she will come back," Johnson said. "I’ve been praying that he’ll give her a chance.
