MILWAUKEE, Wis. – This isn’t Hawaii or the California coast or even Florida. It’s Wisconsin where surfers don’t pray for waves, they work with what they got. “So, it could be a Wednesday night or a Sunday morning, so you got to jump on it,” one local Wisconsin surfer said. In a region known for beer, cheese, and very cold winter, the surf scene is growing and Jake Bresette is helping lead the charge. “I just love it, man,” he said. “Anytime I can get out into the water, whether it’s one foot or 10 feet, it’s always a good time.” More and more surfers are keeping up on a well-kept secret: with the right weather, the waves on the Great Lakes can be just that – great! Outside of the water, Bresette owns and operates Lake Effect Surf Shop in Milwaukee where he sells surf and skate gear and offers lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. “Yeah, we actually do them with or without waves,” he said. “So, if there are waves that’s great, we’ll get out here and score some waves. But, if not, we’ll bring out some big paddle boards.” While introducing the sport of surfing to a new generation, Bresette always remembers to honor the local pioneers of the sport. “We didn’t start the surf scene here,” he said. “We’re just helping to continue the progression.” Bresette says the key to that progression is to get out when the surf is up. “I know it sounds a little cliché, but it is really about the journey as well as the success of finding waves,” he said. The Ohio Department of Agriculture issued a warning about an insect that could kill wine in Ohio.The spotted lanternfly can cause significant damage to some plants and has been seen in Pennsylvania. According to the Department of Agriculture, the insect is fond of grape and fruit trees, hops, blueberry, oak, pine, poplar and walnut. Adult spotted lanterflies usually eat grapevines, while nymphs eat multiple types of plants. The insects eat stems and leaves, which can cause sap to bleed and reduce photosynthesis, which can eventually kill the plant.Spotted lanternflies can be spotted now through November. The insect can be identified by its red body, roughly a half-inch in size, with black stripes and white dots. Later this summer until November, the insect is in the adult moth stage. The adults are larger, roughly one inch in size, with black bodies and brightly colored wings.The insect has not been confirmed in Ohio yet but residents who believe they have spotted one are asked to report it online or by calling 614-728-640. A toddler was found in a cage during an animal rescue operation in Henry County.Henry County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s deputies raided a home with several outbuildings in the northern portion of the county Thursday.The child, who is under the age of two, was found in a cage in the same room as several large constricting snakes next to a box of live mice. The child was filthy, but unharmed and is now in DCS custody. A source said the reptiles could have easily killed the toddler.Deputies found several large marijuana plants and the group rescued more than 100 animals from the home.District attorney Matt Stowe says the child's parents and a grandparent were taken into custody. RICHMOND, Va., — Hospitalizations and the number of cases connected to the coronavirus are decreasing, according to Henrico-Richmond District Health Director Dr. Danny Avula.Avula and city officials provided an update on the progress surrounding COVID-19 and evictions during a Monday afternoon press conference inside City Council Chambers. Avula said the progress has recently plateaued, but the city is in a better position compared to other states.“The pandemic is still very real. COVID-19 is real and what we don’t want to happen is that COVID-19 catches us slipping,” Mayor Levar Stoney said.There have been more than 2,200 positive cases reported in the city and 29 deaths since the start of the pandemic. No Richmonders have died from complications to the virus within the past two weeks, Stoney said.Dr. Avula said they are investigating a cluster of cases that stemmed from a party.About 50 people attended the party indoors and four people have tested positive, Avula said. He would not reveal where the party was held.“Now we are seeing the immediate impact of that. I think that serves as a cautionary tale that the virus is still out there.
