SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While families navigate this holiday season with an extra bit of care in the form of social distancing and face coverings, there are still opportunities to visit Santa Claus with the kids around the county.This year, many malls and amusement parks are keeping the tradition of visiting with Santa alive in some fashion, whether it be socially distanced in person or online.At Westfield and Simon malls throughout the county, visits will require face coverings, physical distancing, reservations, and offer hand sanitizer for visitors.But for families who aren't comfortable visiting the big man in person this year, virtual visits are available. The Otay Ranch Town Center and Chula Vista Center in the South Bay, and The Shoppes at Carlsbad in North County are offering personalized greetings and storytime with Santa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego couple was stuck in Ecuador after the country canceled all travel due to the Coronavirus. After several days of travel, the couple is finally back in their home. A few days ago, Albert "Ace" Elliott was not sure if he and his wife Mindy would ever make it back to their Ocean Beach home. "Without any warning at all, we hear that Ecuador has closed down the country," Elliott said. "No bus travel, no plane travel." For the last ten years, the couple has spent three months of the year in a small surf town in Ecuador. The Elliotts were supposed to fly back on March 31, 2020. But with the pandemic situation, they were stuck. Their flights and back-up flights were all canceled. They called the United States Embassy to see if they could somehow make it home. On Thursday, they were told to leave the next morning. The problem? Ecuador now has a 2 pm to 5 am curfew. Streets and homes are being sprayed down twice a day. Transportation is limited in their rural town. "Ecuador is going after this thing very aggressively. They're not messing around," Elliott said. At 5:01 am Friday, March 27, 2020, they jumped in a taxi. Four hours later, they made it to the airport. "Whether we are on the plane or not, it's just, show up and hope kind of," Elliott said. "So we go up, and our names are on the list. So we were like, OK, we get to go into the airport."They met another American in line, who told them he showed up yesterday, but there was no plane. He became somewhat discouraged. "They said it's a 12 o'clock flight supposedly," Elliott said. "It's 11:30, and there's nothing. Everybody's just sitting around looking, and around the corner, there comes a plane. And we said, Wow! There's a plane!"They were first flown into Miami. But they had no idea how to get back home. When they asked the kiosk for options, it was either 0 to San Diego the next day or to Los Angeles in an hour. They chose the latter."We got to Los Angeles, and from there, we got a rental car and drove home," Elliott sighed. "We made it home."The relief in his voice said it all. Elliott said they were treated well in Ecuador and throughout the trip. But the uncertainty was unbearable. As a surfer, it is difficult to stay away from the beach. But Elliott said for the safety of himself and his community, he will continue to self-quarantine. "I feel pretty confident that we are OK, but we're just going to have to hang out at home again," Elliott said. "Our lives are going to be just about sitting around, but that's what you got to do." 2569

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people were injured after a fire broke out on a boat in Mission Bay, engulfing the vessel, Thursday.San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the fire on the 30-foot vessel off Ingraham St. just after 3 p.m.Two people were burned by flames and jumped from the boat. They were transported to UCSD Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.Witnesses said they initially saw smoke but thought the fire would be extinguished. Within five minutes, witnesses say the flames grew higher and panic set in."It started catching on fire, people started jumping off into the water," said Jorge Segura, who captured video showing a SDFD boat dosing the flames early on. 701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With bars that don’t serve food shut down as of Wednesday, some employees may be finding themselves in need of unemployment benefits just days after they stopped collecting them.Some San Diego County bars got just 19 days to operate before they were shuttered again, but that’s plenty of time for employees to have their unemployment benefits lapse.The good news is that individuals don’t have to start entirely from square one.REBOUND: Search for job openings in San Diego County “It should be less time-consuming this go around,” said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, a local non-profit agency that supports job-seekers with training, but is not in charge of processing unemployment benefits.It turns out, if you stop certifying for unemployment benefits for even one week, your claim goes inactive and must be reopened.The state suggests reopening a claim on UI Online, which can be done at any time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok.His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan.
