CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cameron Wetzler's downtown skate shop almost made the Guinness Book of World Records for being the smallest skate shop on Earth. Instead, the building could be torn down.In July, Wetzler subleased the 100-square-foot building in a downtown Carlsbad parking lot and opened Elm Street Board Shop. He had a local artist spruce up the outside with images of Carlsbad at sunset and a Freddie Krueger theme."All the kids have been skating here for two generations and anybody who lives down here always thought this should be a skate shop," he said. Wetzler's shop, and a vape shop next door, closed in October to make way for redevelopment. A Carlsbad family is proposing to turn the site into a glassblowing operation that would offer classes, demonstrations and shopping."The last thing we want to do is another coffee shop or condos," said Mary Devlin, who would own what's being called Barrio Glassworks. "We really wanted it to be part of the look of Carlsbad and to fit with sort of the real local community."Devlin said glassblowing is becoming rare these days, and was inspired after a trip to Murano Island in Venice with her son. Wetzler raised nearly 0 to appeal to the project to the City Council, but now may withdraw it."It's business, I can't knock it," said Wetzler, who has relocated his skate shop to a spot on Carlsbad Village Drive through a young entrepreneur's program. CHICAGO -- One sector of the economy that skyrocketed as the pandemic hit is now seeing global shortages. Demand for bikes is nearing all-time highs. And if you’re in the market for a new two-wheeler, it may be months before you can wrap your fingers around some handlebars.Bicycles seem to be everywhere, unless you’re trying to buy one.At Edgebrook Cycle & Sport in Chicago, bikes have become a hot commodity during the pandemic.“It has been off the charts. It's unprecedented,” said owner Jim Kirsten.So much so that there’s a critical shortage, not just in the Windy City, but everywhere.“We have about 10% of our usual inventory and our service work which you see kind of surrounding me here is about 300% where it normally is,” said Kirsten.In fact, bike racks at retail giants like Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sport Goods are almost completely bare.Online vendors like Torrance, California-based Sixthreezero say demand for their bikes has jumped 800%. They’ve had to triple their staff to handle the increased interest.April sales for traditional bikes, indoor bikes, and other accessories grew by 75% compared to the same time last year and reached billion for the first time in a single month.Industry experts say commuters abandoning public transportation, gym closures and the search for socially distanced recreation created a perfect storm.Today’s bike boom, they say, is one not seen since the oil crisis of the early 1970s.“Mid to low price bicycles are just wiped out across the country,” said Jay Townley, a consultant with Human Powered Solutions. Townley spent much of his 60-year career at Schwinn and as president of Giant Bicycle Company.“Along with new bike sales, bicycle repair has skyrocketed. There are a lot of shops if you call around the shops in your area, you'll find a lot of them are weeks out for repair,” he said.Townley says the U.S. bicycle market is import dependent with more than 90% coming from China.Punitive trade tariffs, supply chain disruptions and lackluster 2019 sales caught manufacturers off guard and forecasts didn’t predict the increased demand accelerated by the pandemic.“Now, we're in a phase where we're trying to get that pipeline to replenish those inventories and that's going to be extremely difficult as we go forward,” said Townley.It could be late fall before supply catches up to demand. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (CNS) -- Three wildfires continued burning across open terrain on the grounds of Camp Pendleton Wednesday, sending plumes of smoke over northern San Diego County but posing no threats to military or civilian structures.The flames began spreading through training areas toward the center of the Marine Corps base on Monday.As of Wednesday afternoon, base officials said one of the fires, dubbed the Wood Fire, has burned 7,000 acres and is 20 percent contained.A second fire, called the India Fire, has burned 1,100 acres and is 20 percent contained.A third fire named the Range Fire is burning in the Range 706 Yankee impact area and has charred 500 acres, according to base officials.Base officials said the fires are expected to produce smoke through the remainder of the day, and the fires are not posing a threat on or off the base.Military firefighters have been aided by Cal Fire ground and airborne crews in their effort to corral the blazes.Officials have disclosed no cause for the fires. It is not uncommon for munitions training to set brushy native vegetation ablaze at the 125,000-acre USMC base north of Oceanside. 1159

CARLSBAD (KGTV) -  A new online tool is helping Carlsbad residents voice their opinions on issues and how they prefer their tax dollars spent.Voterfied allows voters to weigh in from their phone or computer. "Who can shout the loudest," was what Carlsbad?Mayor Matt Hall said happened at City Council meetings. "That's not what's best for government, you try to engage as many people as possible," saying the silent majority often went unheard."Their vote goes straight into the elected official's ear, and then the elected official is held accountable because they know how their constituents are voting," COO of Voterfied Lee Ann Allman said.The tool was created when Michael Allman ran for Congress. He wanted a way to easily plug in and crowd source, to discover the needs of the people.Voterfied reached out to Hall first and he held onto the experiment with both hands, "everybody has this equal opportunity, they can hear my voice and I can hear their voice." Lee Ann Allman said there is also an educational component to the tool, "there are links to articles so if a voter wants to find out more about something they can click on the link,"The tool is hack proof and compares information you input to the voter registry, focusing the questions they push out on specific residents.In the six or more months Hall's been testing Voterfied, Carlsbad is already seeing an impact. "Instead of having a community center, the public thought more about having a dog park," Hall said.Carlsbad's next big change? CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Two siblings, one brother and one sister, had their children at Cape Coral Hospital on the same day, within hours of one another.Kenia Pozo and her older brother Marcus had a daughter and a son on May 14th.Pozo and her brother's girlfriend Katery Lara, gave birth after two subsequent cesarean sections. Pozo was scheduled to have hers first and give birth to a girl, Michaela Rose, just before 8 a.m. Lara gave birth to a boy, Kaiser Alexis, just after 11 a.m. the same day.The two women say they grew especially close during their pregnancies. Initially, Lara was due on May 26th and Pozo was due May 27th. Both women initially thought that they would give birth at least a day apart from one another. Pozo and Lara, who both have the same doctor, discovered they were going to deliver on the same day after scheduling their surgeries. The women said they were happy to have gone through the experience together and they hope their children will share a special bond because of how they came into the world.  1093
