President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were busy pointing fingers Saturday as a long-awaited stimulus bill has remained stalled. For months, there has been little agreement between the White House, House Democrats and Senate Republicans. And despite calls from Trump and Schumer to pass a stimulus bill, there has been little agreement on legislation framework. One item House Democrats and the White House have generally agreed to is another round of ,200 stimulus checks for most Americans. Beyond that, the sides have not seen much agreement.“Congress must now do a Covid Relief Bill. Needs Democrats support. Make it big and focused. Get it done!” Trump tweeted on Saturday.Later in the day, Schumer tweeted, “To Senate Republicans: Americans need help to fight the COVID crisis. We don't have time for games. We must pass the HEROES Act in the Senate.”In late September, House Democrats proposed the HEROES Act, which included .2 trillion in spending. Previously, House Democrats were pushing a .4 trillion spending package. In addition to another set of ,200 direct payments to millions of Americans, House Democrats propose using 5 million for education, more funding for the struggling airline industry, and 6 million for local governments. The set of proposals would also include a 0 per week unemployment supplement, which expired at the end of July.“This .2 trillion Heroes Act provides the absolutely needed resources to protect lives, livelihoods and the life of our democracy over the coming months,” Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats. “It includes new funding needed to avert catastrophe for schools, small businesses, restaurants, performance spaces, airline workers and others.”Last week, chair of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell endorsed an economic stimulus.“I think we will have a stronger recovery if we can get more fiscal support” from Congress, Powell said.Renewed calls for an economic stimulus come as coronavirus cases are rising to record levels throughout the United States. A number of state governors are mulling reimplementing business closures in an attempt to stave off the spread of the coronavirus. 2194

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Carrying approximately a million books within its walls, Powell’s is a place where readers can get lost for hours both in the store, and in the pages of words thoughtfully arranged by thousands of authors. Emily Powell is a third-generation owner of the iconic independent bookstore.“I think the reason we’re so big and so noteworthy 50 years into our history is really the mix of new and used inventory on the shelf together," Powell said. "Very few folks do that in any industry. Certainly, it was unusual in the book industry at the time, and it’s still somewhat unusual still to this day.”Book lovers travel from all over to explore the so-called "City of Books," thrifting for old books with new ideas.“This is one of my favorite books,” Powell said.It could be a rare book, a timely book, or a book you’ve never heard of before.“It really resonates whether you’re a book lover or just someone with an interest in anything. You just have to find your corner of the store and dive deep into that section.”Powell’s is the world’s largest independent bookstore. The owners recently decided to pull their books from Amazon’s virtual shelves. Some say the world’s largest online marketplace has become a threat to local bookstore culture.“They extract a commission but they also ask for certain customer-service treatment and ways of behaving that are not how we would ordinarily run our business,” Powell said.Powell says business with Amazon became more and more costly, and with the pandemic, she says they needed to find a way forward that is sustainable for Powell’s and the community.“We need to be a part of an ecosystem that’s healthy and vital, and so we have to be part of building that ecosystem and hence the choice to cut off our Amazon business,” Powell said.Powell’s isn’t the only independent retailer struggling to compete with a company offering anything and everything at a cheap price with quick and free shipping. Powell’s has been turning to its e-commerce site during the pandemic as online sales have become essential, but not every local bookstore can afford to have its own book-sale website.“Bookshop is an online bookstore that supports local mom-and-pop, brick-and-mortar independent bookstores,” Bookshop founder Andy Hunter said.Andy Hunter started Bookshop in January. It’s a free way for bookstores to create an online shop to sell to its customers.“They can just go to our website, scroll down to the footer, there will be a ‘become an affiliate’ link and then they can onboard and they can create a shop in under an hour," Hunter said. "Really maybe half an hour. It’s as easy as setting up a Facebook page.”We reached out to Amazon for comment on this book-selling trend, but have yet to hear back. Hunter says Bookshop has already captured nearly 2% of Amazon’s market share for books. He’s hoping that percentage will continue to rise.“If we lose independent bookstores, the importance of books in our culture will be diminished,” Hunter said.Powell says spending money at a local bookstore instead of Amazon keeps the dollars in the community. She says choosing to stop sales through Amazon was a difficult decision, but a necessary one."We’ve contemplated it for years because we know that staying with Amazon was not the best choice for our business, but it’s very hard to give up sales that you really need to keep surviving one way or another,” Powell said. Her hope for Powell’s Books is that they can connect people to the value of reading while continuing to evolve with the changes of the future.“We’re so accustomed in our modern age to the idea that the computer is the best way to find anything, but in fact, it’s very difficult to replicate the in-person experience of a bookstore,” Powell said. She says certain books will always stay relevant. 3820

President Donald Trump remains in the hospital as he's being treated for COVID-19.His doctors today saying he’s in good spirits and has been fever free today, they also say he’s been treated with two different drugs. What are they and how do they work together? We went to a medical expert to try to get some clarity.“About 48 hours ago the president received a special antibody therapy directed against the coronavirus, working closely with the companies and monitoring him,” said Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley. “Yesterday he received Remdesivir, and the plan is to continue a five-day treatment course for Remdesivir.”What is Remdesivir?Dr. Mangala Narasimhan, who’s been at Northwell Health for 13 years and has treated hundreds of COVID-19 patients explains.“Remdesivir is an anti-viral agent and it attacks the virus with hopes of making it less lethal and deadly," she said. "If you give Remdesivir early in the course before patients are really sick, you can prevent them from progressing on to a higher level of illness.”Doctors have recently been using the anti-viral drug on COVID-19 patients, but not the antibody cocktail produced by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals the president is also taking, because it hasn’t been FDA-approved.“Basically what your body does when it sees a virus it produces an antibody, so this is taking an antibody that was produced and cloning it so that produced in higher levels and giving it directly to you,” said Dr. Narasimhan. "The anti-viral cocktail is new, started developing in June, is not FDA-approved but they got it through a compassionate use for the president. We're not sure what side effects are.”The hope is that both treatments together will slow down the progression of the president’s coronavirus but it’s still unclear how his age, weight and the new drug waiting for FDA-approval will play into his recovery.“The two together are unknown for sure,” Dr. Narasimhan said. “The plus is you’ll stop the progression of COVID-19.”The president’s doctors say they are monitoring him closely not just for any COVID-19 complications but also for any effects the treatments may have on him. This story was first reported by Jennifer Bisram at PIX11 in New York, New York. 2224

President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of granting pre-emptive pardons to his three oldest children, top adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner and his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, according to reports from the New York Times, ABC News and NBC News. The New York Times first reported the possibility that Trump could issue the pre-emptive pardons out of fear of politically-motivated investigations from the incoming Biden administration.None of those Trump is considering for a pardon have been formally charged with a crime, though all have been tangentially linked to various criminal investigations over the last four years.Donald Trump Jr. — the president's oldest son — was investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller for a meeting he took with Russian officials during his work with the Trump campaign ahead of the 2016 election.Kushner, the president's son-in-law, did not disclose contacts with some foreigners in applying for White House security clearance. Though it is a crime to provide incomplete information to federal investigators, President Trump granted Kushner unilateral security clearance.Eric Trump is currently serving as the executive vice president of development and acquisitions of the Trump Organization — which is currently under investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In particular, James is investigating millions in tax write-offs for organization "consulting fees." The New York Times has reported that some of those funds went to Ivanka Trump, the president's oldest daughter. It's unclear how the president would issue a pre-emptive pardon for charges that have not been levied. Presidential pardons must be specific in scope. Legal expert H. Jefferson Powell told ABC News that "there is no entire get out of jail free card."ABC News also spoke to a Trump administration source who said the president has gotten an "insane" amount of calls about a pardon for the subject of the massively popular Netflix documentary "Tiger King"Joseph Maldonado-Passage's attorney, Eric Love, also told ABC News that he believes his client is "very close" to receiving a pardon.Maldonado-Passage, better known as "Joe Exotic," is currently serving 22 years in prison after his conviction in a murder-for-hire plot and selling tigers in violation of the Endangered Species Act. 2339
