Children and the elderly may be good at spreading the coronavirus among their age groups, and young adults may be the primary source of community spread, or “super spreading,” according to a new study.The study, published Wednesday, involved the coronavirus testing results of a large contract tracing effort in two states in India. Researchers had results from more than half a million people from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh regions traced after more than 80,000 primary, or index, positive cases.They found that only 8 percent of index cases accounted for 60 percent of new infections. And that about 70 percent of infected people did not infect any of their contacts."That's a hugely disproportionate effect. Superspreading has been suspected, but not really documented,” study leader Ramanan Laxminarayan of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in New Delhi, and also of Princeton University, told CNN.“The greatest proportion of test-positive contacts within most age groups were exposed to index cases ages 20-44 years,” researchers found.While that age group resulted in the highest rate of secondary cases, children under 15 also had high rates of secondary spread among their own age group.During the time period researchers looked at, roughly March through August, schools were closed and there were still high rates of coronavirus recorded among children."While the role of children in transmission has been debated, we identify high prevalence of infection among children who were contacts of cases around their own age," the team wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.The data was collected thanks to rigorous surveillance and contact tracing measures.“Procedures include syndromic surveillance and (COVID-19) testing for all individuals seeking care for severe acute respiratory illness or influenza-like illness at healthcare facilities; delineation of 5km “containment zones” surrounding cases for daily house-to-house surveillance to identify individuals with symptoms; and daily follow-up of all contacts of laboratory-confirmed or suspect COVID-19 cases, with the aim of testing these individuals 5-14 days after their contact with a primary case, irrespective of symptoms, to identify onward transmission,” the study lays out. 2292

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District said Tuesday that it decided to end the employment agreement of Dr. Karen Janney, the district’s superintendent.Janney had been under pressure to step down following a multi-million dollar budget shortfall that prompted an investigation into possible misappropriation of funds.In June of 2020, the board voted 4-1 to place Janney on paid administrative leave.Tuesday afternoon, a district spokesperson wrote to ABC10 News that a new vote happened in a board meeting on Monday night. Video posted by the district only refers to the termination of an employee. Tuesday, the district spokesperson sent ABC10 News the following statement: "The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees provided Dr. Janney a 90-day notice to end her employment agreement, pursuant to Article 17b of that agreement. On behalf of the entire Sweetwater community, we want to thank Dr. Janney for her many years of service and dedication to the district, its board, and our students."Janney took over as superintendent of the district in 2015. Three years later, the district reported a million budget deficit.Also in June, a report from California’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team reported that there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. CINCINNATI – Charles Adams went on a rampage before he died in police custody Wednesday, acting wildly and damaging residents’ property at a Westwood apartment complex, according to a resident and 911 callers."It was bizarre, so bizarre," India Lavender told Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati.Lavender said the 36-year-old Adams jumped on her car and then jumped into her neighbor’s window."(Somebody) came and knocked on my door and told me there was a man standing on top of my car," Lavender said.  “I came out. He yelled at me and told me to call the police, somebody was chasing him,  and he literally jumped off my car into my neighbor's window."Adams damaged at least five others cars while calling out for help as he went along, residents said.“It definitely seemed as if he was hallucinating,” Lavender said. “In his mind, someone really was chasing him, 'cause he was trying to get everyone else in the building to see the other people that weren’t there."Body camera video of Adams' arrest shows him becoming increasingly lethargic and unresponsive after officers put him in handcuffs. At one point, while standing, he slumps forward until he is nearly bent double.When officers escort him outside and allow him to sit down against a railing, he begins to drool and twitch before losing consciousness. "Jeez," one officer says in the recording. "He's foaming at the mouth."His breathing stopped shortly after his eyes closed.The fire department gave Adams first aid, including CPR, but he died on the scene.It’s unclear what brought Adams to the apartment complex. Neighbors said they had never seen him."Officers did not use any type of force to subdue Mr. Adams during the arrest activity," Lt. Stephen Saunders, Cincinnati police public information officer, said in the statement. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - What started as a donation to help hospital heroes has blossomed into an ongoing relationship. The San Diego chapter of the North American Taiwanese Women’s Association makes a point to help in any natural disaster. While they usually would step up to help with something like hurricane relief, they made it a point to help with the pandemic.A woman connected to the group who also works at Sharp Chula Vista told the seamstresses that the medical workers at her hospital were in need of caps, so the ladies got to work. They made a batch of caps to donate, and haven’t put down their sewing machines since.Every time the ladies make a batch of caps, the medical staff take a picture with the items and send it back to the creators.“We love seeing those smiles from the medical professionals and we feel like we are really doing something for them because they work so hard for the community,” said Chunmei Carol Lin, President of the Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego.Since the start of the pandemic, the seamstresses have more than 1,000 caps for the Sharp Chula Vista staff, as of September. The Taiwanese AMerican Foundation of San Diego group and also the San Diego Taiwan Center also donated about ,000 in PPE to the hospital.Eventually, the continuing exchange of donations and pictures earned the group of women a nickname: "Sewing angels."“We thought it was maybe a one, two-time thing but here we are months into COVID and we’re still getting donations from these hard-working ladies every other week without fail,” said Leslie Del Cruz-Torio, who works as a Patient Safety Program Coordinator and distributes the caps when they arrive. 1695
