Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday that it has discovered efforts by Iran, China and Russia to launch cyberattacks on the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer security and trust, wrote that Microsoft was able to stop the cyberattacks from happening, and have notified the campaigns of the three countries’ efforts.“We disclose attacks like these because we believe it’s important the world knows about threats to democratic processes,” Burt wrote. “It is critical that everyone involved in democratic processes around the world, both directly or indirectly, be aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves in both their personal and professional capacities. We report on nation-state activity to our customers and more broadly when material to the public, regardless of the actor’s nation-state affiliation. We are taking extra steps to protect customers involved in elections, government and policymaking.”Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The Trump campaign responded to Microsoft’s cybersecurity report."As President Trump’s re-election campaign, we are a large target, so it is not surprising to see malicious activity directed at the campaign or our staff,” Thea McDonald, deputy national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said. “We work closely with our partners, Microsoft and others, to mitigate these threats. We take cybersecurity very seriously and do not publicly comment on our efforts.”The Biden campaign also responded to the report."We are aware of reports from Microsoft that a foreign actor has made unsuccessful attempts to access the non-campaign email accounts of individuals affiliated with the campaign," the campaign said. MEDINA, Ohio — With every move of a foot or lift of a leg, 13-year-old Isabel Kirby inspires herself and the people around her."More exercise equals more progress," she said. "If you don't have a good attitude about it, you're not gonna feel up to doing things."The teen from Chippewa Lake, Ohio, was suddenly paralyzed from the waist down eight months ago and was diagnosed with a rare, rapid onset disease known at acute flaccid myelitis or AFM.Isabel is making great progress working with therapists twice a week at the main campus at Akron Children's Hospital and their facility in Medina, Ohio.Back in January, Isabel said she was unable to move her legs.During therapy this week, she lifted her legs from a table and a wheelchair and walked with braces called reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO). Physical therapist Renee Parsons provided assistance and encouragement.Isabel is also able to move the pedals on a stationary bike with electrical stimulation and swim in a pool on her own. She can almost stand upright holding the sides of the pool."She just blows me away, honestly. Amazing. She is focused and motivated and strong and brave," said her mom, Noel Kirby.In a few weeks, the family will head to New Jersey to allow Isabel to participate in Project Walk, which helps people recover from life-changing paralysis. Donations through a GoFuneMe account are helping to pay the out-of-pocket costs for the five-day visit.Isabel, who plays softball and is heading into eighth grade at Cloverleaf Middle School, remains hopeful that one day she will be able to walk again on her own."I think I could get to that point," she said."She's gonna do it. She's gonna make it happen," her mom said. "She's trying everything she can to get to where she wants to walk again."Hours after the Kirby family opened presents on Christmas morning, Isabel complained of weakness in her legs.Her parents thought it was growing pains or possibly dehydration, but the next day, Isabel was unable to walk. The eventual AFM diagnosis stunned the family."I just think that people need to know that this is out there, that this exists because we didn't," Noel said.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently warned of a potential AFM outbreak by the end of the year.There have been more than 600 confirmed cases nationwide since the CDC began tracking the illness in 2014. The numbers have spiked higher in even years, which is part of the reason for the concern over 2020.However, Dr. Matthew Ginsberg from Akron Children's Hospital, stressed AFM is still very rare with about 200 to 250 U.S. cases in peak years."Any child who has an onset of weakness in the arms and legs should seek emergency medical attention," Ginsberg said.Medical experts say many children with AFM will have a fever or respiratory illness days before the weakness occurs. AFM has been associated with Enterovirus D68."It's thought to be caused either by a viral infection that affects some of the nerve cells in the spinal cord or inflammation reaction to that viral infection," Ginsburg said.Isabel is thrilled that she's doing better as she works towards her goal to walk again while stressing that keeping a positive attitude is important to her recovery."Life happens, honestly. MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — As early as next week, you could start to see an improvement in the water quality in Martin County.Officials plan to start cleaning up some of the areas most impacted by algae. They hope to give residents some relief from the sight and smell of the algae and help the estuary recover from its damaging effects.Martin County Ecosystem Division Manager John Maehl said because the county declared a local state of emergency earlier this week, it can more quickly obtain grant funds from the Department of Environmental Protection to pay for and expedite clean up efforts.The plan is to get contracted clean up crews on the water early next week, possibly by Tuesday. Even before declaring the state of emergency, county officials had been interviewing and researching companies with technology they say can clean up the algae, without creating more harm to the environment.By next week, Maehl said at least a couple are prepared to get to work.In at least one case, they would be vacuuming the algae from the water.Exactly where the clean up will happen is unclear, but Maehl said the county has been surveying the area, looking to create a priority list of the places they will send crews to first.That could be areas such as Central Marine, typically hit hard by the thickest of the algae.“The really nasty stuff, try to get that out and take away the most noxious component of this and then let the estuary do its thing. The estuary is remarkably resilient,” Maehl said.This is the first year the county has taken on algae clean up effort, so it is a learning experience.“It’s a really complicated issue with a lot of different solutions and really the approach we’re taking is we’re throwing a lot of stuff against the wall and see what sticks,” Maehl said.Stuart resident Teresa Cooper is among those glad to see action being taken.She lives right along the water and can smell the stench of the algae while walking her dog.“I don’t walk him over there, so I just kind of keep him on the side, because it’s bothering me, I’m sure it’s bothering him,” Cooper said. “It hurts your throat and just smells very bad."Maehl said the county also hopes, by next week, to place booms in strategic areas to hold and collect algae. That could include putting a boom in canals leading to the St. Lucie Estuary to keep algae from flowing into the waterway.Maehl is not sure if the cleanup will last for weeks or months. 2457

Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff's officials say a man has been taken into custody after threatening to shoot churchgoers in the north Valley. The investigation began on February 19, when detectives received a Facebook post in Romanian. The post reportedly translated into concerning statements, but nothing specific about the North Valley Romanian Pentecostal Church. A witness reportedly overheard a phone conversation in Romanian on speakerphone. In that call, Ismaiel Damian indicated he was planning on entering the church to shoot and kill many people in attendance with his machine gun. Detectives monitored Damian leaving for the church and took him into custody on Sunday.A .38 Special Taurus revolver was located in his vehicle. Damian was booked into a jail for misdemeanor use of an electronic communication to terrify, intimidate, threaten or harass.  907
