SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A non-profit in Logan Heights is asking for the neighborhood's help clean up a community space used by families and children. The Logan Heights Community Development Corporation owns the Gilliam Family Community Space. In March, they were forced to shut it down indefinitely because vandals were using the space overnight.  The area is covered in graffiti and littered with trash. The vandals were using the tree house overnight and damaging the fruits and vegetables in the community garden.  Now, the non-profit wants volunteers to help revamp the area. They plan on knocking the tree house down and eliminating the garden to deter the people coming in overnight. A large community cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 2835 Imperial Avenue at 9 a.m. The non-profit relies solely on donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach gym ordered to close for not adhering to the county's health orders and linked to one community outbreak has reopened.The Gym was forced to close on July 23 for violating public health orders after "the owners/operators of the Gym have acknowledged that they are aware of the Public Health Orders but will not voluntarily comply," according to a copy of the county order. A week after the county ordered the gym to close, a community outbreak was traced back to the fitness center, according to health officials.The county confirmed on Sunday that the gym has been allowed to reopen after altering their facility to be in compliance with health orders requiring that gyms move workouts outdoors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man fell to his death from state Route 125 in the Bonita area Tuesday morning after a crash in which his car struck and killed a deer on the freeway.Friends told 10News the victim was Martin Lapisch, 44, a Chula Vista resident who is survived by his wife, Linda, and 15-month-old son Kenneth. He was a German immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2003, friends said.“He was a new dad with big dreams, whose life was cut short after a terrible, early morning accident," said a close friend of the victim. “He was a loving father, husband, brother and an awesome friend. He always helped people in need and never asked anything in return," said Lapisch's friend Peter Kritzko.Friends and family gathered together after the incident at Lapisch's home and spoke with 10News but asked not to be identified at this time.California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Jio said they received reports just before 4:45 a.m. of a car that hit a deer and then stalled on northbound SR-125 just before the transition to state Route 54.Jio said responding officers and fire crews arrived to find the car in the No. 2 lane abandoned with the dead deer in front of it. 1207

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Mira Mesa mom she says her special needs son was bullied and robbed at his middle school during lunch.Diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy, Justin Juanengo has surpassed many of the expected physical limitations, but remains unable to use his legs or his left arm. Michelle Juanengo and her husband adopted him at age 2."We've always been worried there would be other kids who would find him an easy target," she said.Last week her fears became a reality. At lunchtime on Wednesday at Wangenheim Middle School, she says a 7th grade classmate and several other students came up to Justin, 13, and started spinning his wheelchair and calling him names."He was nervous, scared. Didn't know where it was going to go from there. There are a lot of things that can go wrong if you're spinning a wheelchair. Were they going to roll him off somewhere?" said Michelle.Justin says it went on for minutes before his friend got the boys to stop. One of the boys then grabbed Justin's backpack and took off. According to his mother, Justin and a friend went to a classroom and found the ringleader, demanding and getting back the backpack. Inside, his wallet containing dollars was gone."Sad, feel terrible for Justin. I feel like he's had to tolerate enough with all his health limitations ... the ways he sees himself as different from other students. Why should he not have the right to go to school and feel safe?" said Michelle.Michelle says her son didn't have an aide with him, which is mandated by the state. She says she has recently learned the aide suffered a back injury last year and the substitute aide is sometimes not available."That's not good enough. He needs to have the aide. That could have prevented this," said Michelle.Another source of frustration? Justin says his bully is known for bullying and stealing from other kids, something Michelle believes should have been addressed earlier. Vice principal Miko Uhuru declined to talk about Justin's case citing privacy. He told 10News one of Justin's parents could sign a waiver, which Michelle says she didn't know about but now plans to sign."What I can says is we don't tolerate bullying. We investigate it and take is seriously," said Uhuru.Michelle says she was told the boy will be punished by the school, but wasn't given specifics. She says she and her husband are thinking about legal action against the school district to "make sure the same thing doesn't happen to other special needs students." 2499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Kearny Mesa company that trains military and first responders at a local movie and TV studio is pivoting to help solve the county's homelessness crisis.Strategic Operations, located in the backlot of Stu Segall Productions television and movie studio, says it plans to begin building temporary housing for homeless families out of shipping containers.The studio lot is filled with shipping containers that have been converted into commercial, residential, and industrial settings to help military, first responders, and medical professionals train. Kit Lavell, Strategic Operations executive vice president, says that the same approach can be brought to constructing temporary housing, which they're calling "Strategic Habitats," and for less."Strategic Habitats are larger than hotel rooms, which recently have been converted to homeless housing, while our Strategic Habitats are priced 30 to 40 percent less than converted hotels or new construction," Lavell said in a release. "Additionally, Strategic Habitats are much quicker to complete over new construction and the units can easily be assembled in a variety of configurations and placed on parking lots or any open property."The 480-square-foot containers will be furnished with plumbing, air conditioning and heating, a double-burner stove, microwave, and refrigerator. Bedrooms will sleep two adults and two children and the housing units can be placed side-by-side or stacked. Lavell says several city officials have visited to tour the potential tool to address the region's homelessness.Ashley Bailey, senior press secretary and director of digital media with Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, said in a statement that the idea is still in its early stages."The City is open to exploring all solutions that help create more housing stock and address homelessness. This idea is in its early stages, and would need to be vetted to ensure that the units are equipped with proper safety and habitability features, as well as the ongoing care that many individuals need.
