IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay family is mourning the death of a popular airport worker to COVID-19.Ana Carina's first symptoms were a sore throat and a cough. Days later, in late July, she couldn't catch her breath."She says she felt she like had asthma. That's when we got concerned," said daughter Karen Miraflores.She says family members brought her mother to an ER, where she was quickly admitted, testing positive for COVID-19. A week later, she was placed in a ventilator."I got scared, became uncomfortable and uneasy," said her daughter.After a month on the ventilator, Carina actually tested negative for COVID-19, but her lungs were too badly damaged. This past Sunday, Carina, a mother of three adult children, passed away at the age of 56."We were all wishing this was just a dream. She was the sweetest. She would call us randomly just to tell her she loved us," said Karen."I just miss her so much. She was so nice and selfless," said Carina's son Luis Miraflores, choking back tears.For nearly a decade, Carina worked at the airport in customer service for an airline, well-liked by co-workers and passengers."Her legacy lives on in the people that she touched," said Karen.Her family can't figure out how she contracted coronavirus. Her hours at work had been greatly reduced. She lived with her children, and they all kept close to their Imperial Beach home. When she did go out, she carried a bag of safety supplies."A Ziploc bag that had santizies, gloves, extra masks," said Karen.In the end, Carina would contract a virus that killed her, despite having no pre-existing conditions."My message is that this is real," said Luis.Luis says he is frustrated when he sees people not wearing masks and not social distancing."Please wear masks. Do everything you can ... This virus is evil. It destroys your body and your family. Everything," said Luis.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses. 1965

If you've notice delays in the delivery of your packages or higher prices for some of things you order, a shortage of truck drivers may be to blame. A new program is hoping to bring some relief, but some worry it'll make roads less safe.The program trains teenagers to drive cross country. Elijah Amos is one of the teens involved with the program and working towards getting his commercial driver’s license.“I think we really did it for me is driving,” Amos says. “Because I really like driving and I feel like you get paid a decent amount of money. Just to drive.”But since he's 18, he won't be able to drive from state to state. He'll have to wait until he's 21. However, a new government pilot program will soon allow some drivers as young as 18 to drive cross country.“I feel like it would open up more job opportunities,” Amos says. “And maybe it opened up the eyes to some of the younger people maybe like actually try and do it.”The program would be available to some members of the National Guard and others with military experience. But in March, House Republicans introduced a bill to lower the commercial driving age to 18 for anyone driving state to state. Their goal? To fight a nation-wide truck driving shortage.Quincy Jones, who directs Sage Truck Driving School, says it's been challenging to attract driving students. He says ultimately, consumers pay the price.“Shipping costs get passed down the consumer,” Jones says. “So if there's a shortage, those aren't getting picked up as frequently. And so who pays them? We do. We all pay. Consumers do."The American Trucking Associations says the shortage is expected to hit 63,000 this year. But with motor vehicle drivers aged 16 to 19 being nearly three times more likely than people over 20 to fatally crash, not everyone believes teen drivers are the solution to the problem.“Younger people have less experience driving for all types of vehicles,” says Norita Taylor, with the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association. “And so the crash rates are higher for younger people, and so we think it would be a dangerous idea.”Sponsors say the bill would require teens complete at least 240 hours driving supervised by a veteran driver.  2240

Hurricane Michael made landfall as a strong Category 4 storm, bringing 155 mph winds to shore.Due to severe safety concerns, officials in Bay County, Florida, said emergency crews wouldn’t respond to emergency calls placed during the storm. During a press conference Wednesday, officials expressed serious concerns of the amount of people who chose to stay and ride out the storm."I'm worried that large numbers didn't evacuate, because we have very good information that they didn't,” said Chief Mark Bowen with Bay County Emergency Services. “When you look at shelter counts, traffic counts, and the number of people who live in those evacuation zones, it's just math. So, there are people out in this storm. It’s just physics and common sense that there's going to be some situations out there that could be unsurvivable.”Emergency responders got emotional as they spoke of having to hunker down and wait out the worst of the storm before they could respond to those in need. In another sign of the times for retail, Lowe's is closing 51 North American stores.The home improvement chain said Monday that locations are underperforming and the decision will help the hardware chain focus on its most profitable stores and "improve the overall health of its store portfolio."Lowe's (LOW) is shutting down 20 stores in the U.S. and 31 in Canada. The company said that a "majority" of the shuttered stores are within 10 miles of another Lowe's location.The stores will be closed before Feb. 1, 2019. The company will try to find jobs at nearby stores for its employees affected by the closings."We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth," said CEO Marvin R. Ellison.Lowe's is struggling to keep up with its larger rival Home Depot. Ellison, who joined the company in May, has already made some big strategic decisions, including closing all of its Orchard Supply Hardware stores and slashing inventory at its Lowe's stores.The company cut its sales and profit outlook for the year.
