A young New York Rangers fan thought he was participating in a game during a break during Wednesday's NHL game between the Rangers and Capitals. Instead, he was surprised by his father. According to the Rangers, Staff Sgt. Ian Buck returned home on Wednesday after a year deployed in Afghanistan. The father ran down the stairs at Madison Square Garden to surprise his son Luke, 10. The two embraced as the arena cheered the father and son. Players from the Rangers and Capitals also participated by banging their sticks and honoring the father and son. An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died Christmas morning in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection, the agency said.He is the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month. The boy, who was detained with his father, died shortly after midnight at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, about 90 miles north of the border crossing in El Paso, Texas. He was taken to the hospital Monday after a border agent noticed signs of illness, and the medical staff first diagnosed him with a common cold and later detected a fever."The child was held for an additional 90 minutes for observation and then released from the hospital mid-afternoon on December 24 with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen," CBP said in a news release.Amoxicillin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic. On Monday evening, the boy began vomiting and was taken back to the hospital for evaluation. He died hours later, the CBP said. The official cause of death is unknown. CBP is conducting a review and will release more details as they become available, it said. The Guatemalan government has been notified and is in touch with the father and family members in Guatemala, CBP said. The CBP news release says the Department of Homeland Security is experiencing "a dramatic increase in unaccompanied children and family units arriving at our borders illegally or without authorization," and per law, holds such individuals at federal facilities until they are deported or released into the United States with a notice to appear in court."During their period of detention they received medical screenings and further treatment as needed," it said.A 7-year-old girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, fled Guatemala with her father, and after surviving the 2,000-mile journey to New Mexico, she died December 8, fewer than 48 hours after CBP detained her and her dad.Her body was repatriated Sunday to Guatemala, and her remains were to be transported to the indigenous community of Raxruha, where she called home. Her death marked another flashpoint in the debate over the White House's hard-line approach to immigration enforcement, with many -- including Jakelin's family -- wondering if better medical care may have saved her.Felipe González Morales, the UN special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, said Monday that American authorities "must ensure that an in-depth, independent investigation" is conducted. 2428

A Philadelphia nonprofit group said it will open the nation’s first supervised injection site next week to combat overdose deaths after a federal judge rejected Justice Department efforts to block the plan.U.S. District Judge Gerald McHugh, in a final ruling Tuesday, said the Safehouse proposal doesn’t violate federal drug laws because the intent is to save lives, not encourage drug use. “We are grateful that the court has once again found that saving lives is not a crime,” Safehouse board member Ronda Goldfein said Tuesday. “We see a great need in South Philly and plan to open there next week.”Organizers are set to announce details on the opening, first reported by 687

A poll released Monday evening by SSRS commissioned by CNN indicates that a majority of Americans might be in support of removing President Donald Trump from office via a Senate trial. The poll, which randomly sampled 1,156 Americans showed that 51% supported Trump's removal compared to 45% who opposed Trump's removal. This was the first time that the SSRS/CNN poll showed more than 50% support in removing Trump from office. In December, polling indicated that 45% supported removing Trump, compared to 47% who opposed it. The composition of Monday's poll was 32% Democratic, 26% Republican and 42% independent or members of another party.Monday's poll gauging support for removal was within the margin of error, which was 3.4%. The poll showed for the second-straight month that Trump's approval rating was 43%, although the survey showed a difference between men and women. Trump's approval rating among men was 50% versus 35% among women. To view the details of the poll, click 996

Actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among a group of 11 wealthy parents expected in federal court on Wednesday as part of the college admissions scam. The defendants are each charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in what prosecutors called "Operation Varsity Blues." Authorities say the parents paid a college prep business to cheat on standardized tests and/or bribe college coaches in order to get their children into competitive universities. The hearing will be the first time the public hears anything of significance from Loughlin about her role in the scheme. Several brands have distanced themselves from the "Full House" actress and her daughter, 19-year-old social media influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli, since the charges were announced.Loughlin's husband, the fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, is also expected to appear in court Wednesday. Huffman's husband, the actor William H. Macy, is not charged in the case.CNN has reached out to representatives for Huffman, Loughlin and Giannulli but has not heard back.Of the 50 people charged in the case, so far four people have pleaded guilty or plan to plead guilty, according to prosecutors.Rick Singer, the mastermind of the scheme; Rudy Meredith, the Yale women's soccer coach who accepted a bribe to help a student get admitted; and Mark Riddell, who cheated for the students on the SATs and ACTs, are all cooperating witnesses for the prosecution. They have agreed to plead guilty and testify for the prosecution in exchange for a lesser sentence.John Vandemoer, the former Stanford sailing head coach, has also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit racketeering.Stanford, USC, Georgetown and other universities implicated in the scheme have said they are reviewing the admissions of students accused of participating in the scheme. Last week, Yale rescinded the admission of one student whose family had paid .2 million to gain entry under false pretenses. What the complaint saysLoughlin and Huffman are the best-known figures in the scheme, and the accusations against them explain how the admissions scam allegedly worked.Huffman is accused of paying ,000 to a fake charity associated with Rick Singer to facilitate cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the complaint says. She discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with Singer, the complaint says.Separately, Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly agreed to pay bribes totaling 0,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the University of Southern California crew team, easing their acceptance to the school. The daughters were recruited as coxswains even though they did not row competitively or otherwise participate in crew, the complaint says. The parents even sent Singer photos of each of their daughters on an ergometer, the rowing machine, the complaint states."I wanted to thank you again for your great work with [our older daughter], she is very excited and both Lori and I are very appreciative of your efforts and end result!" Giannulli allegedly wrote in an email to Singer included in the complaint.Additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN last week.Investigators are expecting to charge more than five others within four to six weeks, according to the official, who cautioned the investigation is ongoing and this is subject to change. 3466
