SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Rain, wind, and cooler temperatures are in the forecast this weekend. San Diego businesses operating outdoors for the pandemic are making plans to stay dry.Since the pandemic started businesses in San Diego have had to get creative to stay afloat.Arthur Boia started PB Yogs as a way for yoga instructors to safely continue classes outdoors.“The thing with us is we’re yogi’s so we’re very flexible,” said Boia. “Whatever it takes.”They hold daily classes at Hospitality Point in Mission Bay where they implement temperature checks and social distancing.Boia says outdoor classes have been working out well under San Diego sunshine, but rain this weekend might pose some challenges.“If for some reason it starts raining and we have to cancel a class we’ll cancel it,” said Boia. “But as soon as it clears up, we’re gonna run right back out here and do yoga.”With rainy season underway, he’s looking for other ways to keep the yoga flowing.“When I was thinking of a tent, I was thinking to close off the back area so you can protect from the wind a little bit, but we also want to have good airflow for COVID reasons. As for the rain, that’s just something we’re gonna have to go by day-by-day," Boia said.Belmont Park is another business with outdoor operations.“We have our new go-kart track, our rock climbing wall, zip line, mini golf,” said Senior Marketing Manager Daniela Bower. The Belmont Park Harvest Walk event runs every Saturday through Nov. 14. Bower says they may have to cancel this weekend.“Even just for safety we can’t operate a lot of things when it’s raining,” said Bower. She adds after a year like 2020, wet weather will just add insult to injury.“It’s already been a struggle for us to be able to open in the first place, so it definitely kind of stings a little bit when we have to close for other reasons,” said Bower.Bower says they’ll make the call Friday afternoon on whether or not to cancel Saturday’s event. The City of San Diego is offering free sandbags in each City Council District. Residents just need to bring identification to receive up to 10 empty sandbags. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County law enforcement officials have joined together to decry the death of a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck until he passed out.Friday, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore was the latest official to issue a statement, saying "we must do better" on Twitter."Now, as frustrating as it may be, we must let the criminal justice system run its course. The men and women of the San Diego Sheriff's Department hold ourselves to a very high standard and work everyday to build trust with the communities we serve. Mr. Floyd's death in Minneapolis is a harsh reminder of how the actions of a few can quickly erode that trust," the sheriff wrote.RELATED: La Mesa officer in arrest video placed on leave, pending investigationEarlier this week, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit also issued a statement echoing the same call for departments to "do better.""The SDPD expresses its sincere condolences to the family of George Floyd. Our profession must do better," Nisleit wrote. "We will continue to work tirelessly to build trust, establish clear policies, ensure consistent training, and maintain open and honest dialogue with our communities."RELATED: Prosecutor: Officer laid on George Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutesChula Vista's Police Chief Roxana Kennedy added, in part, that "we recognize that law enforcement must continually foster a professional culture that prioritizes compassion and care for human life. While I hope and pray an incident like this would never occur in Chula Vista, it is important to openly acknowledge examples of police misconduct so that we remain vigilant in the course of our work."Floyd's death sparked mass protests across the nation and riots in Minneapolis this week. RELATED: Officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck has been charged with his murderThe officer seen in witness video of the arrest, Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, has been fired, arrested, and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Floyd's death. Three colleagues who stood by as Chauvin held Floyd to the ground for nearly 9 minutes have also been fired. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego City Attorney Mara W. Elliott has heard complaints from neighbors and has filed a civil enforcement action to shut down a short-term vacation rental property in La Jolla that has been dubbed a "COVID party mansion."The complaint alleges that defendants are maintaining a public nuisance and engaging in unfair competition, including false advertising at the La Jolla Farms rental property located at 9660 Black Gold Rd. According to city officials, the rental property continues to operate in violation of state and county COVID-19 public health orders.According to a press release, Elliott is seeking civil penalties and a permanent injunction against property owners Mousa Hussain Mushkor and Zahra Ali Kasim, property manager Nital Meshkoor, and Steven S. Barbarich, who leased the property from Mushkor and subleased it as a short-term rental.City officials said the oceanfront mansion has been the subject of at least 30 calls to the San Diego Police Department. Officers have spent more than 173 hours at the property to investigate nuisance activity. Most of the incidents involved raucous parties, some of which had up to 300 attendees.Elliott said about a dozen of the party complaints came during the COVID-19 pandemic, while public health orders prohibited large gatherings.According to the press release, concerns about the property were brought to the City Attorney’s Office by San Diego police and by neighbors who reported that the situation was "becoming more pronounced as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed." “Shutting down dangerous party houses protects the public health by preventing COVID super-spreader events and other illegal behavior,” Elliott said. “It’s unfortunate that San Diego does not have short term rental regulations in place. Relief for this neighborhood would have come much sooner. Instead we must rely on time-intensive prosecutions at significant taxpayer expense.”According to the press release, gunfire was reported to police during a party in May of 2019. Officers arrived and found a large party in progress. Partygoers questioned by police admitted gunshots were fired during a fight that had occurred earlier. Police found shell casings outside the property and a neighbor found an additional casing the next day and turned it over to police. The City Attorney's Office assembled evidence from investigations by SDPD, the Code Enforcement Division of the City’s Development Services Department, the County Health & Human Services Department, and the City Fire Marshal. Elliott hopes the action makes the owners clean up the property and relieves neighbors. 2644

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego has experienced one of its best whale watching seasons this year, thanks in part to plentiful amounts of food along the coast. As winter and spring gray whale watching die down, the summer season will bloom, giving way to Blue Whales feeding off our coast. Gray whale season typically takes places from mid-December to April, while blue whale season is around mid-June to September. So naturally, many residents and tourists will flock to the sea and coastline as whales flock to our waters for food. And the results can be astounding.RELATED: Humpback whale feeding frenzy off San Diego's coastBy land, San Diego has some prime viewing spots in Central and North County, according to Domenic Biagini, of San Diego Whale Watch. And if you're going by sea, Biagini says a little research can go a long way in finding a great experience. Here's some tips on how to best view natures gentle giants in San Diego, either by land or sea.By landWhile whale watching from the shore won't get viewers close to the animals, it is a cheaper alternative that can be just as fun.Cabrillo National Monument, Torrey Pines Glider Port, Sunset Cliffs, and Fletcher's Cove in Solana Beach are great spots to watch for sprouts of whales from shore, according to Biagini. At Cabrillo, viewers can head to Whale Overlook or the Old Point Loma Lighthouse to lookout for whales. In Torrey Pines, Sunset Cliffs, and Solana Beach, onlookers have a full coastline of areas to peer from.San Diego's Tourism Board also adds Birch Aquarium at Scripps as a prime viewing area. And a tip to remember: During the winter and spring seasons gray whales tend to feed closer to San Diego's shore than blue whales, Biagini says.By seaOne benefit of heading out on the water to whale watch, aside from getting closer, is having San Diego's skyline in the background. Also, you may encounter other life roaming around whales as they feed.Whale watching journeys are offered around San Diego, but there are some things to watch out for before picking a company. Biagini recommends checking on what a company has seen already before booking a trip."If they’ve been seeing a lot of animals that’s your best bet to have a good experience, and if the company isn’t posting their sightings they’re either not a serious company, or not seeing anything," Biagini said. "Honestly, just for companies that publish their daily sightings."Most whale watching companies will update their websites to reflect what they're seeing on the waters, some daily. San Diego's Tourism Board provides a list of companies to research if you plan to hit our coastal waters. And, of course, if you plan to take in some whale watching on the waters, read up on the Marine Mammal Protection Act beforehand so as not to put whales, dolphins, and other life at risk. 2827
