SHOREWOOD, Wis. — A Wisconsin physical education teacher has been placed on leave after allegedly telling African-American students to reenact slavery and "slavery games."April 1 was a typical day in gym class at Shorewood Intermediate School until seventh-grader Alexis Averette says she was assigned an odd game by PE instructor Jan Zehren. “Ms. Zehren forced me and my partner to reenact slavery in front of the entire class," she said. "When we told her we were uncomfortable she told us we still had to do it."While some students presented dodge ball, others say they were paired up by race and told to reenact "slavery games." When Alexis and her partner proposed another game, the students say they were told it was too common.When Alexis told her parents, her mother and father were shocked. “She came home and she told me she had to reconstruct games ever played during slavery," said Alexis's father, Yuri Averette. "Yeah, I was completely shocked. I knew it was a problem immediately when she said she was uncomfortable."Averette and other parents voiced their concerns to the school. In response, Zehren was escorted out of building and placed on leave.Zehren has taught physical education in the Shorewood School District for 36 years. The school district sent a letter to students and parents saying they were investigating. Parents like Averette are seeking justice and want Zehern fired.“We don’t want (that) here and that’s not just for my child but for any other child. They have over 100,000 rocks from space.Charis Krysher, a Lunar Curation Processor for NASA, says moon rocks and space dust are the most important thing brought back to Earth.“One of the first things that we learned from the Apollo collection was how old the moon the Earth was,” Krysher says.Rocks on Earth aren’t pristine like they are on the Moon. Moon rocks don’t age, because there is no atmosphere in space to break down the rocks. The rocks found on the moon can potentially be billions of years old. “More recently we've actually learned in the past, less than a decade, that the Moon's rocks actually contain way more water than was originally realized,” the processor explains. Just like famous diamonds and jewels, there are well known space rocks, too. Like the one found by Apollo 15. “They named it the Genesis Rock, because it’s a part of the primordial crust of the moon,” she says.When studying these samples, scientists take all the precautions, from wearing bunny suits, temperature-controlled rooms and even triple bagging each rock for storing."We try really hard to preserve the rocks so that the science that we learn from the rocks can be trusted," Krysher says.It’s not every day we go to the Moon, so these scientists take time to study the rocks and do it sparingly. They are still breaking rocks over 40 years old. However, come five years from now, they’ll get another chance for more rocks when U.S. astronauts head to the moon in 2024. 1796

Suzanne Eaton, the American scientist killed in Greece, was raped, police in Crete said Tuesday.Police said Monday that a 27-year-old local man had confessed to the crime.The suspect said in his confession that he had seen Eaton running, and "with sexual assault as a probable motive, hit her twice with his car in order to immobilize her," Crete's Chief of Police Konstantinos Lagoudakis said at a press conference Tuesday."Then, after she was unconscious, he put her in the trunk of his car and took her to the location of the World War II bunker" where her body was found, Lagoudakis said.The suspect raped her and dumped her body into the bunker, covering the opening of the bunker's air shaft with a piece of wood to hide it, Crete Police's head of press Eleni Papathanassiou told CNN.It is not clear if Eaton was still alive when she was raped, she said.Wheel tracks lead officers to the suspect, police said, explaining that they had linked tracks found near the bunker to his car, which, they say, he cleaned after the attack on Eaton.During preliminary questioning, the suspect denied having been near the bunker for a month, which raised suspicions, Lagoudakis said.Signals from the suspect's phone also placed him near the crime scene on the day of the attack, the police chief said.Police say the suspect is a married father of two who owns farmland near the crime scene.
