Some eggs and embryos at a San Francisco fertility center may no longer be viable after a storage tank malfunction.The Pacific Fertility Center said a piece of equipment in its cyro-storage laboratory "lost liquid nitrogen for a brief period of time" on March 4.It is the second clinic to report a fault that weekend.In an unrelated event, more than 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos were also left compromised at the University Hospitals Fertility Clinic in Cleveland after a malfunction caused temperatures to drop in the freezers where they were stored.Viable tissue recoveredIn a statement, the Pacific Fertility Center said "viable tissue" had been recovered from the one tank affected and that "the vast majority of the eggs and embryos in the lab were unaffected."The equipment was immediately retired and the facility is now operating securely, according to the statement."As soon as the issue was discovered, our most senior embryologists took immediate action to transfer those tissues from the affected equipment to a new piece of equipment."The center said it had brought in independent experts to conduct a full investigation and was reaching out to its patients: "We are truly sorry this happened and for the anxiety that this will surely cause."The clinic's president, Carl Herbert, told the Washington Post that staff had spent days sorting through records to establish which patients had tissue inside the affected storage tank, before clinic doctors called them."Anger is a big part of the phone call," Herbert told the Post. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to American Cancer Society, one out of nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Ted was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 71.“The percentage of men my age that do come down with it is quite high, so I was startled – obviously nobody wants to find out they have cancer – but I wasn’t shocked,” prostate cancer patient Ted said.However, Ted found out he was a prime candidate for a type of treatment called HIFU, which stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The procedure has been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t approved for use on prostate cancer in the U.S. until 2015.“The HIFU procedure is basically a high-intensity focused ultrasound beam that oblates the cancer cells – basically blasts the cells away,” Ted said.Urologic surgeon Dr. Andre Abreu with Keck Medicine of USC says there’s a spectrum of patients who develop prostate cancer. Some are very low-risk, meaning they have very little cancer. They’re chosen for active surveillance where they are closely watched to make sure they don’t develop more cancer. Others have very advanced forms of cancer and need radical treatment like radiation or removal of the prostate. Then there are patients in the middle who largely benefit from HIFU.“In between, there are some patients with intermediate risk disease that are not the best candidate for us to watch them for active surveillance, however, the radical treatment would probably be associated with side effects,” Dr. Abreu said.Side effects like leaking urine, or issues with erectile dysfunction.“Some of these patients, they would be even willing to trade off some years of life, but having more quality of life,” Dr. Abreu said.A study at Keck Medicine of USC shows focal HIFU ablation carries a low risk of complication and can help preserve quality of life. That was certainly the case for Ted.“I experienced very little pain with the procedure," Ted said. "I took ibuprofen which is an over-the-counter pain reliever. And the only negative thing I did experience was wearing a catheter for a week.”“HIFU is repeatable, HIFU is non-invasive, HIFU is an out-patient procedure,” Dr. Abreu said.An out-patient procedure means the patient can be in and out of the hospital in one day without staying overnight. For Ted, it only took three hours. He says he would recommend the procedure to other men in a similar situation.“As I understand it, it’s been used in Europe for 15 years already with no problems. So, I think to take advantage of the technology that’s there is something the doctors should rely on,” Ted said. 2645

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office is considering bringing more criminal charges against Paul Manafort, after it accused the former Trump campaign chairman of violating his plea deal to cooperate with prosecutors.The announcement came at a half-hour court hearing Friday morning, where Manafort's team learned that his sentencing for conspiracy and witness tampering will happen on March 5, 2019.The hearing came just days after special counsel prosecutors said they believe Manafort lied during his interviews with investigators following his guilty plea in September. The special counsel's office may have to turn over evidence backing up its claim in the coming weeks.Such a move could give Manafort's legal team, and in theory, President Donald Trump's lawyers if they are still in touch, a new window into some of the information Mueller has collected during the investigation.Manafort pleaded guilty earlier this year to two charges of conspiracy and witness tampering, while publicly admitting he committed several other financial and lobbying crimes. He separately was found guilty by a jury in Virginia of eight financial fraud charges related to his Ukrainian lobbying proceeds.Lead prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said the Justice Department is evaluating whether Manafort could still be held liable for crimes he's admitted to but is not currently charged with in federal court."I don't know at this time. SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting a 27-year-old man in an alley in the La Presa area south of Spring Valley, authorities said.Deputies responding to a report of gunfire shortly after 1:20 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Delrose Avenue and Elkelton Boulevard found 27-year-old Carlo Avila of Santee in an alley with at least one gunshot wound, according to sheriff's officials.Paramedics responded, but Avila was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt.
