SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited the U.S.-Mexico border Monday for a news conference. During the conference, Sessions announced that he would be referring all illegal border crossings to the Department of Justice. Sessions said he will be implementing a "zero tolerance" policy and that any people crossing the border illegally will be prosecuted. RELATED: President Trump visits border wall prototypes?"The American people are right and just and decent to ask for this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As winter approaches, doctors are worried about more than the novel coronavirus."When winter comes we all tend to go indoors, and [viruses are] more likely to spread between us in school, in workplaces it's just going to happen," Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, said.If you develop a cough, fever, chills and you're achy, Dr. Smith said it could be a variety of viruses."We are going to have multiple viruses running around in the community at the same time. Double triple, it's not just the flu it's RSV that kids oftentimes get, adenoviruses and other seasonal viruses and they all look the same," he said.Dr. Smith is urging San Diegans to get a flu shot, especially this year, concerned about the hospital being overrun, "it's not just the PPE, it's the hospital beds, the doctors and the nurses, and everybody who has to take care of them."Cajon Valley Union School District has had students on campus since July. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews responded Wednesday afternoon to two brush fires that scorched an area near Mission Trails Regional Park. According to firefighters, the fire broke out near Hemingway Drive and Jackson Drive around 1:40 p.m. At this time, it's unclear if any homes are being evacuated.Once crews arrived, they discovered that two spot fires were burning in the same area. Firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the blazes around 2 p.m. RELATED: Gusty Santa Ana winds, dry conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for San Diego CountyThe first fire burned about an acre while the second scorched roughly half an acre. No one was injured and no structures were damaged. Sky10 was over the fire shortly after it started.
