LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV)— Scientists all over the world are now studying last night’s 7.1M earthquake near Ridgecrest, CA. Seismologists say we should be expecting another big quake in the near future. It seemed like deja vu — a 6.4M followed by a 7.1M, just one day later. “Some people would like to call them separate events, but I don’t think they are separate events,” UCSD Seismologist Dr. Debi Kilb said. Kilb believes neither jolt was a foreshock or an aftershock. She considers these two quakes “mainshocks,” in what is called a “doublet sequence.”“Because the space and time of these earthquakes are so close together, we are beginning to call them an earthquake doublet. So that includes the pair of 6.4 earthquake and the 7.1 earthquake,” Dr. Kilb said. Not only did it shake for several seconds, tremors were also felt from across the state, and even in Arizona. Like the first big earthquake on July 4, the 7.1M was another rare one. The quake was not along a known fault line. Instead, scientists say this may map out a brand new fault.“It was a right lateral fault, meaning that the [earth’s] material on this [east] side moved to the right and down and the material on this [west] side moved up,” Dr. Kilb said. Luckily, California’s most massive quake in 20 years occurred in a rural area, meaning injuries and damages were minimal. But Dr. Kilb says living in California, we are never completely out of the woods. “We live in earthquake country,” Dr. Kilb said. “And earthquakes happen all the time, and they will often be a surprise. Right now the reporting is that there is a one in 20 chance that we will have another 7.0M or greater.” 1664

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas State Police say a man suspected of stealing a taxi was fatally shot by a trooper after the man stabbed and wounded another law enforcement officer over the weekend.State police say 58-year-old Aloysius Keaton of Little Rock crashed the stolen cab while exiting off Interstate 30 and stabbed an Arkansas Highway Patrol officer who tried to arrest him.Police say the trooper shot Keaton after a shock from a stun gun failed to stop him as he approached the trooper with the weapon.The trooper ordered Keaton to stop and drop the weapon, but police say he failed to comply with the order and charged toward the officer, who then shot the suspect with a handgun.Keaton later died from his injuries at an area hospital Saturday night.State police say the Highway Police officer was treated and released and the trooper was uninjured.Keaton’s body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where an autopsy will be conducted.The trooper remains on paid administrative leave and has not yet been identified. 1056

(KGTV) - A strip mall that had fallen into disrepair and attracted squatters has been placed into receivership, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.Located on the 7400 Block of Broadway, the property consisted of several buildings that had closed about a year ago after the city busted an illegal marijuana dispensary.But that’s when the real problems began.“Lots of police calls, criminal activities and police responses,” said Richardson Griswold, who was appointed as the receiver by a superior court judge on Friday.It came after the City of Lemon Grove had been granted a judgment against the owners of the property. The judgment required that the owners clean it up and properly secure it, but that was never completed.When the receiver arrived Friday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Department was called in to remove six people who had been living inside. One of them was found hiding in the attic. Four were taken into custody on existing warrants.Inside, Griswold said there was “heaps of trash, clothing, and no plumbing, so there was the smell of human feces and human urine.”He had already hired a crew to start clearing out the buildings and board up the access points. LACEY, Wash. — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed late Thursday as a fugitive task force tried to arrest him in Lacey, Washington.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl was killed as a federal task force attempted an arrest. He was wanted by Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 39-year-old Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a member of the right-wing group "Patriot Prayer," last Friday during clashing protests in Portland.According to the Marshals, a task force located Reinoehl in Olympia, Washington and attempted to take him into custody peacefully. The federal agents claim Reinoehl brandished a firearm during the encounter, and the Marshals returned with gunfire.Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the task force members were injured.On Thursday afternoon, Reinoehl told Vice News that he shot Danielson in self-defense on Saturday, believing that he and a friend were about to be stabbed."You know, lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn't even be saying anything, but I feel it's important that the world at least gets a little bit of what's really going on," Reinoehl told Vice News. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that."Portland has seen protests nightly for about 100 straight days, dating back to the Memorial Day weekend death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some demonstrations have been peaceful, a small area of downtown Portland has been marred by vandalism and violence for several straight months. So far this year, we’re well over 110 million meals. The numbers have shot up astronomically,” Hodder said.The organization has provided 1.5 million more nights of shelter in addition to 900,000 instances of emotional and spiritual support.“As eviction moratoriums start to expire, as corporate capabilities to support people with furloughs or reduced hours decline, we’re anticipating a 155 % increase in the number of people coming to the Salvation Army for Christmas assistance,” Hodder said.And, with the coronavirus pandemic, the Salvation Army decided to get creative.
