Seismologists say we should be expecting another big quake in the near future. It seemed like deja vu — a 6.4M followed by a 7.1M, just one day later. “Some people would like to call them separate events, but I don’t think they are separate events,” UCSD Seismologist Dr. Debi Kilb said. Kilb believes neither jolt was a foreshock or an aftershock. She considers these two quakes “mainshocks,” in what is called a “doublet sequence.”“Because the space and time of these earthquakes are so close together, we are beginning to call them an earthquake doublet. So that includes the pair of 6.4 earthquake and the 7.1 earthquake,” Dr. Kilb said. Not only did it shake for several seconds, tremors were also felt from across the state, and even in Arizona. Like the first big earthquake on July 4, the 7.1M was another rare one. The quake was not along a known fault line. Instead, scientists say this may map out a brand new fault.“It was a right lateral fault, meaning that the [earth’s] material on this [east] side moved to the right and down and the material on this [west] side moved up,” Dr. Kilb said. Luckily, California’s most massive quake in 20 years occurred in a rural area, meaning injuries and damages were minimal. But Dr. Kilb says living in California, we are never completely out of the woods. “We live in earthquake country,” Dr. Kilb said. “And earthquakes happen all the time, and they will often be a surprise. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officials are investigating a triple shooting at the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino that occurred Saturday night at around 7:29 p.m. Responding officers located the three victims suffering from gunshot wounds upon arrival and they were transported to UMC after being stabilized. LIPAN, Texas – A man in Texas is dead after a possible mountain lion attack and officials are warning nearby residents to keep young children inside at night as they search for the animal.Around 3:30 p.m. last Thursday, deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 15000 block of Howell Rd. in Lipan in reference to a missing person call.Deputies were told Christopher Allen Whiteley, 28, was missing and last seen on Wednesday, in the early morning hours.Deputies checked a wooded area nearby and eventually found Whiteley deceased, the sheriff's office said.Preliminary findings show Whiteley died from a wild animal attack, possibly a mountain lion.The sheriff’s office has contacted a governmental trapper with the USDA, who specializes in tracking and removing mountain lions. Officers said they'll work with the trapper and Texas game wardens to locate the animal.The sheriff's office urged the Lipan community to be mindful of their surrounding and to keep their young children and animals inside at night.“The safety of Hood County citizens are my priority one, but please don’t interfere with the process of locating the animal and stay clear of the area being actively worked by officials," said Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds.Whiteley’s body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.This story was originally published by Thalia Brionez at KXXV. 1415
