PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida man is on a mission to do something nobody else has ever done: become the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman.Chris Nikic has become an inspiration to people around the world and it started with a simple mission.Nik Nikic encouraged his son to push himself 1% more each day.“We came up with this concept of just get a little better today than yesterday,” Nik explained.Now, 21-year-old Chris is about to do something incredible. On November 7, he’ll swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2 mile marathon in Panama City Beach.“I want to inspire others so that they can be like me and so that one day they can do it too,” Chris said with a smile.If he completes the race within 17 hours, Chris will be the first person with Down Syndrome to ever finish an Ironman.He also has a message for the other competitors: “You better watch out, because I’m going to beat you!”“Really, you’re going to beat all of them?” his dad asked.“Yeah!” Chris answered enthusiastically.Chris has spent several months swimming off the coast of Pinellas County as he trains with coach Dan Grieb for the big race and gets used to the choppy Gulf of Mexico waters.“I’ve learned that you can teach anybody anything if you’re willing to love them through their disability or love them through their struggle,” Grieb added.Chris has been documenting his journey on social media. Thousands of people all around the world have sent him messages of support, including many parents of children with Down Syndrome who say Chris is motivating their kids to also strive for excellence.“They say I’m their hero,” Chris added.Chris is already brainstorming his next target: Competing in the 2022 Special Olympics and finding a special someone to share all these accomplishments with.“I want to get married. PARK COUNTY, Colo. — A Discovery Channel reality show about gold mining is dividing the small Colorado mountain town that provided its setting — even as the show plans to move on. The show “Gold Rush” turned a small old mine in Fairplay into a much bigger operation. Fairplay is located about 85 miles southwest of Denver. Producers of “Gold Rush” said they will not return to Park County, but the residents say they are still feeling the impacts and worrying about future expansion."It's hard to describe what a four-foot boulder sounds like getting dropped into metal," said Jamie Morrow, whose home is about a quarter of a mile away from the mining operation. Morrow and her family purchased their property before the reality show began — when the mining in town was minor and mostly unobtrusive.  "It was quiet. It didn't make a lot of noise and was a small two or three man operation," Krissy Barrett, who also lives in the county, said. Some citizens in Fairplay have filed lawsuits seeking to reverse rezoning approved by county leaders that converted residential land into mining areas. Even though “Gold Rush” is moving on, residents are still fighting in court. They say large mining equipment remains in the area.Some residents say they’re worried the mining operation will continue to grow.  "Me and a bunch of other of our folks said we can't allow this because if they can rezone that parcel from residential to mining, they can do any parcel. They could rezone next door to us, next door to anybody," Barrett said. Leaders of the small town have embraced the national attention the reality show brings. "We've had a huge uptick in visitors coming to the visitors center. A lot of them are expressing their desire to go out and see the show, the mining," Fairplay town mayor Frank Just said. Some residents said the show’s presence in town was positive. Keith Wortman said he made extra money renting a home to the crew. A server in a local restaurant said the location got more business when production was happening. "Pretty exciting to have a big show come to town," bartender Melissa Mcaninch said. But opponents argued the town’s mountain beauty is also a big draw, and that beauty could be impacted if mining continues to expand. "The population that comes up here to look at the beauty, to enjoy the beauty, is way bigger. We believe the overall economic impact from our maintaining our aesthetics here is way bigger than a small TV show and way longer lasting. You know gold mining is a boom and bust," Barrett said. The town’s mayor said mining has been around in Fairplay since 1856 and it’s here to stay. “I'm sure a negative effect on some of the folks that were the closest to the mine, but all in all, those folks [the miners] have a right to do what they've done," Just said.  2958

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Four Florida siblings were on a mission to bring their dad home. Scott Piwinski has terminal throat cancer and the community came together to grant his final wish. Quadruplets Nick, Danielle, Rachael and Sarah Piwinski were preparing to spend their last Thanksgiving with their dad.“My dad. He means everything to me,” Nick said.“It definitely has been a struggle. I’m grateful for my siblings,” Danielle chimed in.Together, the 21-year-old siblings worked to complete their dad’s final wish — to spend his remaining days in his own home.“For him to come home one last time and spend it with us — for hours, days or weeks — is going to be incredible,” Rachael said while wiping away tears. But two years fighting terminal throat cancer took a toll on Scott and his Palm Harbor, Florida home. From a hole in the roof to stained carpet, the home was in need of some TLC. “The entire house was not in any shape for him to come home to,” Danielle said.So the siblings put out a call to the community and Scott’s Coast Guard family, where he served as a chief for more than two decades.Almost immediately, dozens of volunteers fixed the roof, put in new floors and prepared Scott’s bedroom for his return.“They said if we were in this situation, we know Scott would do the same,” Sarah said with a smile.Next door neighbor Melissia Delgado was one of the volunteers to chip in.“When we first moved into our Palm Harbor home, Scott had just been diagnosed with cancer," Delgado said. "He had a trach in his throat and he was outside offering to help us move furniture into our house! Which was amazing.”Even strangers like Carissa Konopack donated an entire Thanksgiving meal.“It just touched me so deeply and I really felt like I wanted to help too,” Konopack explained.The Piwinski siblings hoped to bring their dad home by Thanksgiving, but an insurance mix-up pushed back their plans. However, he did return home Friday afternoon, much to his family's delight.But they spent the Thanksgiving holiday at Suncoast Hospice.“That means the most to us," Danielle said, "that we’re all together." 2171

Police in Ohio are looking for thieves who made away with massive amounts of candy at a Garfield Heights convenience store.According to detectives, a Cleveland-area Speedway convenience store has been robbed of tens of thousands of dollars in sweets.Garfield Heights Police said they have been working this case since June.“We're getting calls after the fact because when they're doing their inventory, then they're discovering the shortage,” said Detective Phillip Herron.The surveillance video shows the robber walking in, followed by several other people.“This guy’s got a bag, he's shoving all kinds of candy and there's a lot of people in that store, and not one person has called us, alerted us,” said Herron.The manage of the Speedway declined to comment on the robberies. Herron said the manager has also declined to speak to police.“As far as getting cooperation from employees in the store, we're not getting a lot of cooperation,” he said.So where is all this candy going? Herron said the robbers are most likely not eating it all, but reselling it.“Either take that candy and resell it to a store,” he said. “We got information from other cities that, some of these inner-city stores are buying the stolen candy for pennies on the dollar and they'll be able to resell it and make a bigger profit.”Back in July of 2016, thieves stole hundreds of dollars worth of candy at the Speedway in nearby Berea. Police in Middleburg Heights, another nearby Cleveland suburb, also confirmed a similar robbery earlier this year.The detective said the black market is becoming a bigger business on the streets. He said all the cases could possibly be linked.So far, Middleburg Heights said no arrests have been made in their case. Berea Police have not responded to requests for updates.  1854
