RIGA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Parliament Speaker Gundars Daudze here on Tuesday.     In his meeting with Zatlers, Hui said the China-Latvia relations have been developing smoothly in recent years. The two sides have maintained high-level contacts and strengthened mutual political trust. There has also been remarkable progress in economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people contacts.     President Zatlers visited China last year and reached important consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of bilateral relations, said Hui.     The current visit is aimed at implementing the consensus reached last year, deepening friendship and promoting cooperation, he said.     The two sides should work together in face of the current global financial crisis, and should also look even farther and further promote cooperation, he said. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- As more people made return trips to go back home and work, China saw a traffic boom on Thursday. Road transport departments nationwide carried 62.23 million passengers on Thursday, up 9.0 percent over the same day last year, according to the Ministry of Transport (MOT).     In the eight-day holiday, a total of 488 million passengers made journeys by road transport, representing an increase of 6.8 percent over the same period last year. BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, issued a new regulation Wednesday targeting prevention and remedies for marine pollution caused by ships.     The regulation, which includes nine sections and 78 rules, said transportation departments under the Cabinet should compile emergency plans to deal with pollution caused by ships or related activities.     Once the plans are completed and have been approved by the Cabinet, coastal governments above city level should map out emergency plans based on one proved by the State Council.     China's transport departments and governments above city level have also been asked to establish emergency mechanisms and plans to prevent and deal with marine pollution.     Marine management institutions should cooperate with other departments to improve monitoring and supervision over the activity of ships and pollution caused by them     Professional teams to deal with emergencies, specialized equipment and facilities should be organized, according to the regulation.     Anyone who is responsible for marine pollution should make efforts to eliminate the pollution hazard and make compensation.     The regulation will take effect on March 1, 2010.     Official statistics say 733 ship pollution accidents occurred between 1998 to 2008 in sea areas in China's jurisdiction, which led to huge economic and environmental losses. The regulations will apply to every type of shipping, except military.

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.
