LIMON, Colo. -- When they first teed off this fall, the Limon High School boys’ golf team wasn’t sure what to expect.“We try to give 100% effort,” said Brady Rockwell.“We just kind of have to keep moving forward,” said senior Kory Tacha.They played with the same competitive spirit they always have.“They just want to compete,” said head golf coach Andrew Love. “And we wanted them to have that opportunity.”After all, "Badger Pride" isn’t just an empty expression around here.“Two back-to-back championships,” said Trey Jeffries.“Two-time state champs,” Love said.Yet this team isn’t exactly what you might expect.“Some of them have never even picked up a club before,” said Trey Hines.The 2020 Limon golf team is actually the Limon football team.“Almost all of the football players are out here,” said Hines, the quarterback of the football team.The boys were essentially forced into a more socially distant sport by the coronavirus.“It’s a work in progress for all of us, I think,” Tacha said. “Golf is just one thing to take our mind off all the changes and have a little bit of normalcy. We just want to be out here doing something.”“There’s no trash talking in golf, really,” laughed senior Gaige Hilferty, who also wrestles and plays baseball. “I’ve always wanted to golf, and the school never offered it.”“I’ve never really been a golfer,” said Rockwell, a cornerback on the football team.In fact, there was no golf team at all in Limon until COVID-19 disrupted the world of high school sports.“They were like, ‘Well, what are we going to do, coach?’” said Love, who is also the head football coach. “And I was like, ‘Well, we can create a golf team!’ Almost half-joking. Kind of hoping that it wouldn’t happen, and it did.”What it did was kept this team together.“We had about 22 kids out here,” Hines said.It kept them social.“I’m definitely glad we’re just doing something out here,” Hines said. “And not sitting at home mourning the loss of football. I’d definitely rather be competing at something.”And kept them competitive.“I’m definitely learning something new and getting better at it,” Rockwell said.A little diversion for the reigning back-to-back Colorado Class 1A football champions.“You have to have the nice, proper clap,” Hilferty said. “Not the yelling and screaming that goes hand-in-hand with football. Golf is a game of patience.”“Hopefully this year we can do the same thing,” Love said.Limon finished its golf season at the end of September and has now restarted its football program thanks to new guidance from the Colorado High School Activities Association. After initially announcing football would be played next spring in Colorado, CHSAA recently reversed that decision, allowing teams to play this fall if they opted for Season A.“I’m just looking forward to starting play,” Rockwell said. “I want to play as soon as possible.”The Limon Badgers will play their first football game of the season this coming Monday, Oct. 12 against Yuma High School. LAKEPORT, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities say a firefighter has been killed battling the largest record blaze in California history.State fire officials say the firefighter died Monday at the site of the Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco. More details have not yet been released.Six firefighters have now died in connection with a wave of massive wildfires that struck Northern California in the past weeks.The deadliest wildfire, the Carr Fire, has left a total of eight people dead, including three firefighters.Two firefighters have died fighting a fire near Yosemite National Park.The Mendocino Complex — actually twin fires being fought together — has burned for more than two weeks. The fire has burned nearly 150 homes and about 547 square miles of brush and forest. That's an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. 842

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo.As of Sunday afternoon, the video received more than 600,000 views. The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center near San Deigo. WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  936

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Authorities are offering up to ,000 for tips leading to the arrest of the person who burglarized a gun shop in La Mesa last month.At about 11 p.m. on May 30, an unknown man burglarized Alex Imports Gun Shop located at 7839 University Ave. in La Mesa, according to the ATF. The suspect stole nine long guns, investigators say.The burglary happened the same night that rioting and looting occurred around the city.The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, about 30 years old, with black hair, about 5-feet 8-inches tall, and weighing about 200 pounds.Anyone with information is asked to call the ATF at 1-888-ATF-TIPS (888-283-8477). 679

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Citizen Public Safety Oversight Task Force of La Mesa met Wednesday virtually, following two high-profile incidents involving the city's police department.The recently formed group is tasked with looking at whether La Mesa needs a police oversight committee and then decide what it will look like.The group's chair, Jamal McRae, realizes they are a temporary task force, but hopes it rolls over to become the permanent commission."We're still trying to educate ourselves as to what our committee will do, as far as, will be able to have subpoena power? Do we want subpoena power? We're still in the research phase." McRae said. "We're trying to determine whether we want to put this on a ballot to have individuals on the city vote on it, or if we wish the city council will just have the final say.McRae points out the idea for the task force came before the controversial incidents involving La Mesa police officers, and before the national calls for police reform following the death of George Floyd."We're a group of individual citizens that got together and wanted to make a change in the community after the Helix High School incident," McRae said. "So we have been running through some ideas for a few years, just among community members."McRae says the group understands the importance of their work and the urgency to complete their tasks. That's why they have scheduled three meetings next month. The meetings are scheduled for July 1, July 8, and July 15.They hope to present a plan and a sense of direction to the city council by the end of July. 1596
