SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez has floated the idea of turning the second floor of Golden Hall into a permanent homeless shelter.Gomez made her comments Tuesday as the City Council unanimously approved a plan to use the second floor as a temporary shelter for three months while a Father Joe's bridge shelter is relocated. The current shelter for women and families at 14th and Commercial will close April 1. The city plans to build a new tent shelter to open on a lot at 17th and Imperial by June 30. Construction will cost million and the city will lease the land for ,000 a month. "So why spend million to put something back when we can actually spend million in maybe long-term leases to try to find a permanent solution," Gomez said. The Golden Hall concourse is about 1.5 miles away, and steps from City Hall. The bottom floor is still used for various events, including naturalization ceremonies and performances. Greg Block, a spokesman for the mayor, said long-term at Golden Hall wouldn't work for Father Joe's."For their clients, they need to be close to their main campus," he said. "Going back and forth via shuttle and all kinds of things isn't a workable solution for these folks that are there longer term."Bill Bolstad, chief revenue officer for Father Joe's, said the 17th and Imperial location would help residents get health and child care and employment services. "All kinds of things that are infinitely easier to provide when it's right next door, that's why we're very excited about the location down there," he said. Gomez said she understood that but also that Golden Hall is also close to those locations on the east end of downtown. It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner.The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area.The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood.When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure.The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion.The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego may be America's Finest City, but when it comes to parking around town, the experience is not always a pleasant one. "It's horrific," said Shadrach Vaughn the founder of Park Connect. Vaughn recently launched Park Connect in July. The company's goal is to help connect homeowners or businesses who have empty parking spots, with people who need them.The owner or business can list their spot on the Park Connect website, and select a daily, monthly or hourly rate. Vaughn said. Sara Ghodsi, one of Park Connect users, has her empty spot listed for  an hour, a day, or 0 for the entire month. And in two months, she says she has made 0. "This spot is always open. I figured I might as well get some type of income coming in." Ghodsi said. As long as people continue to hit the beaches and streets of San Diego, Vaughn says, he will continue to help people fill their parking spots and their pockets. Vaughn said, "San Diego is expensive, right? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is facing an Excessive Heat Warning Friday through Monday night, affecting businesses working outdoors and families working and teaching from home.The state issued a Flex Alert for Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. to relieve the power grid. Californians are encouraged to use major appliances before 3 p.m., turn off lights, and set the air conditioning to 78 degrees or higher.Many San Diegans escaped the heat by heading to the bay where temperatures were much cooler.RELATED: Stretch of scorching heat begins in San Diego County"I'm getting ready to get in the water with my kayak," Diane Valdez said. I, fortunately, have a pool so I get to sneak out there and do that, but that doesn't cover the outdoor nature experience they need," Lee said.Further inland from the park, Sport Clips barbers were working hard outside back in the parking lot under a tent."It was pretty brutal yesterday," Barber Michael Celatka said. He said Friday afternoon was better thanks to a light breeze.He said they're one of the only barbershops open in Clairemont because of the pandemic, many can't work outside. Client Alex Becker said he was excited to finally get a haircut, "it’s been about two months, normally I get my hair cut once a month but it’s been desperate times."Becker said he was thankful for the work Celatka was doing.Celatka said the heat has impacted their schedule, "we’re normally open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. so we adjusted it today and tomorrow 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m."Everyone finding ways to cope with the extreme weather during an uncomfortable time. 2458
