There was a “concerning” increase in the number of drug overdoses in the US in from March through May 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.The data were part of an annual analysis of drug overdoses in the US. The data went from June 2019 through May 2020. The CDC noted that pre-pandemic drug overdoses were up in the month preceding the pandemic, but increased further when much of the US economy closed to stop the spread of the virus in March.The CDC previously estimated that 19,416 Americans died from drug overdoses from January through March 2020, which was up nearly 3,000 deaths. Approximately 81,230 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in the 12-months ending in May 2020, the CDC reported. For the year ending in May, there were nearly 10,000 additional drug overdose deaths compared to the previous year.The CDC said that synthetic opioids, primarily illicitly manufactured fentanyl likely drove the increase. The American Medical Association says that there has been a 37% drop in prescriptions of opioids since 2014.“The increase in overdose deaths is concerning.” said Deb Houry, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “CDC’s Injury Center continues to help and support communities responding to the evolving overdose crisis. Our priority is to do everything we can to equip people on the ground to save lives in their communities.”The CDC issued a set of recommendations to help combat drug overdoses:Expand distribution and use of naloxone and overdose prevention education.Expand awareness about and access to and availability of treatment for substance use disorders.Intervene early with individuals at highest risk for overdose.Improve detection of overdose outbreaks to facilitate more effective response.The CDC added that “Measures taken at the national, state, and local level to address the COVID-19 pandemic may have unintended consequences for substance use and overdose, but CDC is working with states, territories, tribes, cities, and counties across the country to continue drug overdose surveillance and prevention efforts.”During the same timeframe of March through May 2020, more than 67,000 Americans died from the coronavirus despite intense mitigation efforts, according to Johns Hopkins University data. There were more than 35,600 requests from 28,200 public school teachers in every state on the crowdfunding website DonorsChoose.org — until now.The website that allows folks to seek donations to fund projects announced a company called Ripple, a global network that supports digital money transactions, donated million to fund every classroom project request on the crowdfunding platform.The gift represents the largest donation received by DonorsChoose.org in its 18-year history, according to a news release. "Ripple and its executives contributed the donation in XRP, which was converted to U.S. dollars and used to purchase the classroom materials," the release said."The Ripple team's donation provides the ultimate culmination of #BestSchoolDay, a campaign launched in March 2016 when 58 athletes, artists, entrepreneurs and philanthropists funded classroom requests in cities and states covering just under half of the country," the release said. Thousands of California's weary wine country residents are confronting yet another devastating wildfire. The Glass Fire has scorched more than 66 square miles and destroyed about 95 structures. It's the fourth major fire in three years in the Napa-Sonoma area. The region is nearing the third anniversary of a 2017 wildfire that killed 22 people. For many, seeing the blaze come over the iconic ridges was a painful reminder of the losses in 2017. The sheriff acknowledged “fire fatigue." Further north, a wildfire burning in rural Shasta County has killed three people and destroyed nearly 150 buildings.Since the beginning of the year, there have been over 8,100 wildfires that have burned well over 3.8 million acres in California, Cal Fire said. According to ABC 10News’ media partner Televisa, the state of Baja California has had almost 27,000 COVID-19 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.For comparison, San Diego County's had startling 97,549 cases but far fewer deaths. As of Thursday, 1,103 deaths had been reported.On Thursday morning, ABC 10News spoke to Televisa anchor Estephania Báez about how hospital capacities across the border are maxed out, pulling the city out of its less restrictive orange tier and back into its most restrictive red tier. That hasn’t happened since the summer.“The difference between now and then is that now people don't have fear with COVID-19 here and [people have] to go to work so they prefer to [become] positive rather than to lose a day of money,” she added.Baez said there's concern over both apathies to wearing masks and resistance to any news of a vaccine. “They don't even want to get vaccinated. TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal grand jury has indicted six men on charges of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.In October, the men were arrested in what authorities describe as a plot by anti-government extremists angry over the Democratic governor's policies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced in a statement that the indictment was handed down Wednesday.According to an indictment released Thursday, Adam Fox, Brandon Caserta, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, and Daniel Harris, all of Michigan, and Barry Croft of Delaware, allegedly began to plan the kidnapping last summer.According to the indictment, they allegedly conducted surveillance of Whitmer's rural vacation home and practicing the use of firearms and explosives.On August 23, Garbin, Franks, and Caserta met up with Harris near his residence in Lake Orion, Michigan, to examine each other’s identification documents to make sure they weren't undercover law enforcement agents or informants, according to the affidavit.WXYZ reports that federal agents were infiltrated among the group as either confidential informants and undercover FBI agents.According to the indictment, Fox ordered ,000 worth of explosives from an undercover agent in September.Fox also ordered a taser in October, WXYZ reported. Fox was also photographed at the governor's summer home drawing a map of the property.According to WXYZ, Fox, Garbin, Franks, and Harris were arrested after showing up in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to pay the undercover FBI agent posing as a co-conspirator for the explosives.
