SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua)-- Amazon on Thursday launched an e-book lending service for owners of its Kindle devices, letting them borrow one digital book per month with no due date.Amazon said Kindle owners with an annual Prime membership can choose from thousands of books to borrow for free, including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers. The online retail giant did not give an exact figure on the number of books of the new service.According to the company, readers' notes, highlights and bookmarks in borrowed books will be saved, so they will have them later if they purchase or re-borrow the book. Customers can have one book out at a time and the borrowed book should be returned through the Kindle device when they want to borrow a new one.In a press release, Amazon said it has reached agreement with publishers for a vast majority of titles for a fixed fee. But in some cases, Amazon is purchasing a title each time it is borrowed by a reader under standard wholesale terms.An Amazon Prime membership costs 79.99 U.S. dollars a year in the United States and gives members free two-day shipping and free access to the company's video streaming service containing some 13, 000 TV shows and movies.The new service is not compatible with smartphones, personal computers or tablet computers from other vendors running with Kindle apps, which makes Amazon's Kindle e-ink readers and its latest low-price tablet Kindle Fire more enticing to customers.According to Amazon, the Kindle Fire, which is priced at 199 U. ISLAMABAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan ranks the seventh in the world in terms of diabetes prevalence rate and over 7.1 million people in the country are diabetes patients, reported local media on Monday.Quoting a report by the World International Diabetes Federation, a local English newspaper "The News" said that every year 89,000 people die of diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetes patients in the country could hit 11.5 million by the year 2025 if proper measures were not taken.This would make Pakistan the world's fifth largest country in terms of its number of diabetes patients 14 years later, warned the report.At a seminar organized Monday in Islamabad to observe the World Diabetes Day which falls on Nov. 14, Dr. Abdus Salam from Shifa International Hospital, a private-run hospital in the capital city, said that every ten seconds, two people are diagnosed with diabetes and one person dies of diabetes-related causes.The average age of diabetes patients in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, said the report. In a bid to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of diabetes, various diabetes camps, scientific sessions, seminars and walks were organized across the country on Monday to mark the World Diabetes Day.In a message delivered on Sunday, Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said that the World Diabetes Day draws attention to the lethality of the disease and underscores the need of preventive measures at individual and collective levels."Diabetes is a killer which is taking the life of one person out of every 800," said the prime minister, adding that "this disease hits people of all age groups, rich and poor alike without any discrimination."

(AMD) on Thursday said it plans to cut its global workforce by about 10 percent in a move to reduce operational costs.The layoff will occur across all functions globally and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of the first quarter of 2012, the company said.The cuts will amount to about 1,400 jobs, according to estimates by analysts.Combined with implementing efficiencies across the company's operations, AMD expected that the workforce reduction will result in operational savings of more than 200 million U.S. dollars in 2012."Reducing our cost structure and focusing our global workforce on key growth opportunities will strengthen AMD's competitiveness and allow us to aggressively pursue a balanced set of strategic activities designed to accelerate future growth," Rory Read, AMD's chief executive officer, said in a statement.As the world's second largest maker of processors for computers, AMD has been suffering from the slowdown of global PC market and is seen as slow to move into new mobile device market.The operational savings will help accelerate the company's future growth in lower power, emerging markets and in the cloud computing field, AMD said.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The personal information of more than 6 million Internet users on CSDN, or China Software Developer Network, the country's largest programmers' website, was leaked by hackers, raising concerns about web security and triggering widespread panic.The leak was first exposed by China's leading anti-virus software provider, Beijing-based Qihoo 360, on Wednesday. The company said the leak included user IDs, passwords and e-mail addresses in clear text.The hacking case escalated on Thursday after the personal details of subscribers to more websites, including popular online gaming and social networking sites, were leaked.Online media reports said the personal data of up to 50 million Internet users has been leaked so far, but the number could not be independently verified.In response, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT/CC) issued a statement Thursday, saying the CSDN's user data bank that leaked on the Internet was created before April 2009 and the passwords were stored in clear text, but the passwords had been encrypted after the data bank was upgraded in April 2009."Therefore, similar security problems have not been found in the newest user data bank," the statement said.Technical experts are investigating how many websites and users were actually involved in the hacking case, said Zhou Yonglin, director of the CNCERT/CC Operating Department."False information and exaggerations cannot be ruled out," he said.Nevertheless, CNCERT/CC has ordered CSDN to take immediate action in repairing the system hazards and providing users with timely security solutions.Computer security experts at Qihoo 360 believe the leak has spread to other websites."Many Internet users have registered the same passwords for their e-mail, microblog, online gaming and online payment accounts, so, if the server of one of the websites is hacked, their accounts and passwords on other websites would also be stolen," said Qihoo 360's Dr. Shi Xiaohong.Police authorities in Beijing told Xinhua on Friday that an investigation has been launched.WEB SECURITY IN QUESTIONDisgruntled Internet users in China rushed to change their passwords after the leak occurred, the largest of its kind in the history of China's Internet development."It is very annoying.
