Companies everywhere are hopping on the bandwagon to eliminate plastic straws, as plastic becomes harder and harder to recycle.An Oregon man, who started his glass straw business over a decade ago, is finally seeing his business take off.“We’re still doing the same thing we’ve been doing for over 12 years,” says Craig Graffius.But when Graffius started making straws out of glass to cut down on plastic, he was on to something.“A sustainable product is so much better than a throw away product,” says Graffius. “By far.”And this June, it seems a lot more people agreed with him.“500% percent, 600 percent growth overnight,” Graffius says.Suddenly, Graffius found he couldn’t keep up with the demand. He went from producing 2,000 eco-glass straws a week to a couple thousand a day.The push to eliminate plastic straws has caught on so fast, Graffius had to hire a business partner to keep up with inquiries from around the world.As for the copycat companies that he knows are popping up, he sees it as a good thing because they’re all working toward the same end goal.“The more education we can do as a team, the better for us,” Graffius says. 1157

CLEVELAND, Ohio - We’re a little over a month away from Thanksgiving and health officials are more concerned than ever thinking about spiking coronavirus cases as families may be planning to gather for the holiday.“We had seen a decrease in cases from our peak, of course, which was in July and we were down into the 40s per day of receiving cases until the mid-last week. Then it started to go up from there," said Romona Brazile, Interim Co-Director of Prevention and Wellness Services at Cuyahoga County Board of Health. "Of course, we want to see our families, but limiting the number of people, still trying to practice social distancing even if it is in your own home, still wearing a mask."Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease agrees. His own family is now sacrificing not seeing each other as his children worry about his age and possible exposure to the virus.“Don't assume that because you're in your own home with your own family that you're not going to spread infection,” he said.Even traveling to see our families is risky. Dr. Fauci said travel on planes and public transportation could increase exposure to the virus.Instead, the CDC is offering up some suggestions on ways you can still have a holiday celebration with friends and family while being safe.The agency said celebrating virtually is your best bet, but if you do meet up in person make sure you stay outside as much as possible and avoid crowds. The CDC also said gatherings with more preventive measures in place pose less risk compared to gatherings with fewer or no preventive measures at all.After any holiday celebrations, you should stay at home as much as possible, avoid crowds and those considered at risk. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said that a yearling bear that was burned during a wildfire last month is recovering well and should be released in coming weeks.The bear was found in the midst of the East Canyon Fire, which burned thousands of acres in southwest Colorado last month, and rescued by CPW officers, who took it to the Frisco Creek rehab facility for treatment on its singed paws and other injuries.The bear is a yearling born during the winter in 2019, CPW said. CPW Officer Steve McClung said at the time the bear likely got caught in the wildfire and had to run across hot spots. The veterinary manager at Frisco Creek said the bear’s injuries would likely not lead to any permanent damage.On Tuesday, CPW sent out new photos of the bear looking healthier already, and said that Frisco Creek had given good news on the bear’s rehab progress. 861

CINCINNATI — Women who've gone through mastectomy know the experience is life-altering. There are a range of reconstruction options, or survivors can choose to "go flat."If they do that, they might only use a silicone prosthesis. But volunteers with knitting needles at Mercy West Hospital are providing a second choice."It helps you relax," Vicki Wright said.Wright knits on her porch in Ross Township, Ohio, her knitting needles quietly clicking away."Each pair takes me 3 to 4 hours," she said.Wright's not talking about socks or blankets. She's creating a lifeline back to normalcy for women who will get her work."I find them really comfortable," Sue Yates said.Under her clothes, Yates is wearing "Knitted Knockers" — soft, comfortable prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.They first came to the attention of Dr. Anna Sobolewski, a breast surgeon at Mercy West, thanks to a patient who had had a double mastectomy. That woman learned about them in a support group and chose them over her heavier silicone prosthesis."When I saw her back in the office for a visit, she pulled out the knitted knocker from her bra and said, 'This is the best thing ever,'" Sobolewski said.Wanting to give her survivors another option, Sobolewski went to the auxiliary."And...asked me if volunteers would be interested in doing a project like this," said Alice Wanninger, Mercy West's director of volunteer and auxiliary services.They got on it, knitting all different cup sizes with guidelines: They must be 100% cotton — so they're soft and don't irritate surgical scars — and they have to be washable.Wright said she loves the work. For her, it's a chance to use the knitting knowledge passed to her by her grandmother to help others."She would be pleased, too," she said. "It was passed down – a family tradition with love."Wright has stitched about 50 pairs since she started the work last winter. That's making a difference for women who've gone flat after surgery.Sobolewski said Knitted Knockers fill a void as patients go through a tough journey. They help with self-image after surgery."I think it's an appearance thing – it's just all in how you want to feel about yourself," Yates said. "How you wanna look."She said they're more comfortable and not as heavy as the silicon."Women helping women — that's what it's about," Wanninger said.
