SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A popular North Park concert venue has agreed to pay ,000 worth of fines and reimburse the City of San Diego ,000 in police investigation costs.The operators of Observatory North Park agreed to pay the penalties after City Attorney Mara Elliott filed a complaint against the venue on July 3. The complaint alleged the venue's operators were maintaining a public nuisance and operating without required permits. The city attorney's office added that the Observatory has become a source of local complaints for, "noise, violence, teenage drinking, public intoxication, public vomiting, and the accumulation of trash, debris, and human waste."“The Observatory has long dragged its heels on correcting violations that would protect the safety of its patrons and North Park community residents,” Elliott said in a release. “Its managers have agreed to begin following the law, and if they don’t, our Office will be there to hold them accountable.”The building also includes West Coast Tavern next door, which shares restrooms and bar areas with the theater.Between January 2015 and May 2019, San Diego Police received 174 calls to the venue, leading to 500 hours of overtime, the office said.The operators of the North Park venue agreed to address criminal activity and nuisance complaints and obtain all required permits. The venue's mezzanine and balcony will also remain closed until building permits and code violations are addressed. If the Observatory fails to comply with the terms of the agreement with the city, another 0,000 in fines will be issued, the office said.The lawsuit is the latest issue in the city's battle with the venue. Thursday to talk about food insecurity among our nation’s military and veterans.San Diego County has the largest concentration of military and veterans in the world. The CEO of the company shared the group’s mission with lawmakers and how they can feed military families who don’t have enough to eat. Feeding San Diego works to serve thousands of people through food rescue. The organization gathers quality food that would typically go to waste. “Last year we rescued 24 million pounds of food that was going to leave the food system, and go to the waste system, from stores, farms, manufacturers and other sources,” says CEO Vince Hall. The hearing examined the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs programs that provide nutrition assistance to nearly 20 million veterans across the country. Feeding San Diego serves local veterans and military members through an initiative called “Feeding Heroes.” It reaches local families and veterans on or near base, in military housing, and public schools serving students of military families. Dana Henderson, with Feeding San Diego, says the high cost of living in the county is a big reason for food insecurity. “What they are receiving is just not enough to make ends meet.” She goes on to say, “People on a daily basis are having to make those tough decisions between a nutritious meal or paying other types of expenses.”Over 2.3 million meals were distributed to veteran and military families through Feeding San Diego last year. 1818

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego ER Nurse known as the "dancing nurse" returned home Saturday after working nearly a month straight in a Texas hospital.That was her second stint during the pandemic. She went to New York for six weeks from April to May to help out there.While in New York she danced to bring joy to her patients and that's how she got her nickname, the "dancing nurse.""They kinda just see me dance and they’re like wait a minute I know you!" Registered Nurse Ana Wilkinson said she is recognized sometimes at home in San Diego.When asked what it is like being known as the "dancing nurse," she replied, "They [my patients] probably think I’m weird right off the bat but it’s a good conversation from there on and I think it actually eases them because they’re so nervous and so scared."With nearly 300,000 Americans losing their lives due to the coronavirus, it's understandable why they're scared.Right now, cases and hospitalizations are sky high.When asked if Wilkinson keeps count of how many patients she's lost, she said, "I do not, I mean it wouldn’t. I prefer keeping count of people I save, I mean people we all save it’s not just me."Wilkinson said she remembers days they've lost as many as 10 people in one day on the floor. Some of her patients stay with her after they've passed. "My 23-year-olds, my 25, I say mine because I felt like they were my kids that I tried everything I could to save them. And to a lady who was 32-years-old who died from COVID. That’s what I try to tell people, COVID does not discriminate, age, race, color, anything. It just picks you."She squeezed their hands in reassurance. Sometimes she's the last smile they see.Now that a vaccine is coming, she's excited to have a weapon in the war."We just need everyone on board to do this, you can’t just one person, just maybe? It’s going to be yes. This is how we’re going to do it. We’re all going to get vaccinated. We all are going to stop this war," she said.A war that kept her from seeing her 7-year-old son Declan lose his first and second tooth.A war that kept her on the opposite coast for birthdays, Easter and Mother's Day.A war she's continuing to fight when she returns to work at UCSD Medical Center on Monday."We are definitely warriors and we'd do it again, and we'd do it again and we'd do it again because we love it. We love helping others. We love helping people and that's why we do this because we want to make a difference in the world," Wilkinson said.She said working in a rural Texas hospital was very different from her time in New York. In the month she was working 10+ hour shifts, she only had three days off.She said we've learned a lot about how to treat coronavirus patients since the beginning of the pandemic."I was in Midland and Odessa. We were a very small town but we saw everything," she said she learned even more critical thinking skills.The most stressful part of her work was how packed the hospital became, saying patients were sent from nearby hospitals that were at capacity.When asked if she regrets going to New York and Texas and if she would do it again, Wilkinson said, "I would do it in a heartbeat 100% I love these medical missions I call them, because yes we see a lot of things. Yes it’s emotional and some of us have PTSD because we do see a lot. But we do it because we love it. We love helping others, we love making a difference as much as we can." 3421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man suspected of trying to burn down an Albertson's sign in El Cajon pleaded not guilty in Superior Court Friday.Joshua Edgell Wright was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly set fire to the sign at the grocery store off Broadway. A local business owner followed him to a Smart and Final in Lakeside, where he was apprehended. Wright appeared in court via video conference and said nothing. Records show he's been charged with 16 crimes in the last three years, including for petty theft, shoplifting, and resisting arrest.Deputy District Attorney Brandon Owens declined to discuss Wright's criminal history. Judge Daniel Lamborn set bail at ,000.
