You hit a pothole, nail or curbWhile you’re checking your tires’ pressure — which you should do at least once each month — run your hand over the tread surface to see if there are any nails stuck in the tire or cuts in the tread or sidewall, Bennett says.If you find a nail, don’t pull it out or you might wind up with a flat tire. Instead, drive to a tire repair shop and get them to pull out the nail and, if necessary, patch it.Often, tires are damaged by running over a pothole or rubbing against a curb while parking, Edmonds says. Look for bubbles or bulges that could indicate a developing problem and result in a high-speed blowout. Damage on the inside of the tire is harder to spot and might require a trip to a tire store for an expert’s inspection.3. Your tires are losing tractionTires that have lost all or most of their tread can feel fine while driving in dry conditions. But once rain or snow hits, they lose traction and braking distances increase, Bennett says.To measure tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread in the center of the tire with George Washington’s head pointing toward the tire. If the tread obscures the top of his head, your tires are in good shape.If the top of Washington’s head is even with the tread, the tires are still safe to drive on, but it’s time to start shopping for new ones, Bennett says.4. As the tread wears, tires can become noisy, according to Edmonds.Tires that wear unevenly can cause a vibration through the car, which is commonly felt through the steering wheel. You bought your tires more than six years agoRubber dries out over time, and even if there’s still plenty of tread, the sidewalls can crack.The date the tires were manufactured is printed on the sidewall and is usually preceded by DOT for the Department of Transportation. The first two numbers stand for the week in the year it was made, and the other two are for the year. For example, if your tire has “1109” printed on it, then it was manufactured in the 11th week of 2009.Edmonds says that tires should not be in continual service for more than six years or, if a car was garaged for extended periods, 10 years from the manufacturer date.Tire care basicsTires are expensive, but if you maintain them correctly, most tires provide reliable service for up to 60,000 miles. Here’s how to keep your tires in good condition so you can drive safely:Buy a tire gauge and pump. Tire gauges typically cost less than . And instead of inflating at crowded gas stations, buy a battery-operated inflation pump for less than and do it at home.Locate your tire pressure level. The correct tire pressure level is usually listed on the yellow sticker often found in the driver’s side door jam.Check your tire pressure at least once a month. To get an accurate reading, check your tires in the morning before you drive anywhere. Tires heat up when you drive on them, and this throws off the inflation amount.Don’t forget your spare tire. Inflate your spare tire if you have one. SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak.This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation.The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said.But the cost is now coming under scrutiny.From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit.The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million.Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely.The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied.In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) - With their backs to the wall, facing elimination, an unforgiving heat, and trying to stave off fatigue from a rigorous schedule, the Park View Little League all-stars survived to play another game at the West Regional tournament in San Bernardino.Keyed by slugger Jose Mendoza and stellar pitching by Kainoa Baptista, the Green Monsters kept their postseason run alive while ending the Arizona Sunnyside Little League's hopes of advancing.  The squad from Chula Vista defeated Sunnyside 9-5 in an elimination game Tuesday afternoon.PVLL, which suffered its first loss of the postseason on Monday, took an early 3-0 lead on a first-inning three-run blast to right center by Mendoza.The Southern California champs broke the game open in the third inning.  Down two outs with runners on first and second, Aiden Skinner punched a deep single to right field scoring Jordan Bleisch.The long inning and blistering 108-degree heat seemed to wear down Arizona starting pitcher Cristobal Lorta.  Lorta started struggling with his form allowing Park View to extend their lead 7-0 on two wild pitches with runners on third and an RBI single to Conner Alonzo.Sunnyside's decision to keep Lorta on the mound in the fourth inning backfired when the leadoff batter, Ivan Rodriguez Jr., ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double. (AP) — Jury deliberations have resumed in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors last Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt. The jury was off Friday and deliberations started again Monday.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account.If Merritt is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. 869

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A son of one of the founders of the Sinaloa drug cartel has appeared in a U.S. court on trafficking and other charges after he was extradited from Mexico. A lawyer for Ismael "El Mayito Gordo" Zambada-Imperial says he pleaded not guilty to the charges in the federal court in San Diego and his next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7. Zambada-Imperial is accused of smuggling large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to the United States, as well as the laundering of profits from the illegal drug trade.
