Voters in Mississippi voted to approve a new state flag design.Lawmakers took action this summer to retire the former Mississippi state flag, which contained the Confederate battle emblem.The rebel symbol is widely seen as racist.In the last two months, the process to design and vote on a new flag has moved fast.There was a call to artists to help design a new flag. By law, the new flag must include the phrase, “In God We Trust,” and could not include any depictions of the Confederate battle flag.The designs were narrowed to five based on a public online vote and feedback. Then a commission narrowed it down to a final option.That option, including a magnolia, the state flower, and red, blue and yellow bands, was on the ballot for voters to approve. 766

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — One person was killed after being struck by a vehicle in North County.The person was hit on northbound Vista Village Dr., between W. (KGTV) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the San Diego Sheriff's Department need your help identifying the man responsible for an attempted bank robbery on the 1700 block of University Drive. The man entered the Bank of America on Thursday around 1:30 p.m., pulling his gray, hooded sweatshirt over his head he approached the teller and handed over a note demanding money. The robber was denied money and departed the bank on foot. The investigation indicates the man may have used the “Sprinter” train to escape from the area. (CNS) - A suspected unlicensed and intoxicated driver who allegedly struck and killed a Fallbrook woman while she was walking with her husband, then fled the scene and sold the involved vehicle, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.Pascual Cristobal Pascual, 34, of Fallbrook, is accused in the Dec. 10 death of 60-year-old Symone Conley, who was struck by a pickup truck that veered out of a traffic lane on Gird Road near Laketree Drive and jumped a curb, according to the California Highway Patrol.Conley died at the scene.Following the deadly impact, the motorist pulled over and remained in the area for a short time before driving off, the CHP reported.Deputy District Attorney David Uyar said Pascual purchased alcohol about 15 minutes prior to the deadly crash and purchased more alcohol during the weekend following the crash.Pascual was arrested three days after Conley's death, but not before he allegedly sold the vehicle involved in the crash."Not only has he demonstrated his willingness to flee and evade justice, but also to attempt to destroy evidence in the process," Uyar said.Investigators identified Pascual as the alleged hit-and-run driver based on physical evidence at the scene of the traffic fatality, statements from the victim's husband and "numerous calls and leads," CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.At his arraignment, San Diego Superior Court Judge Amalia L. VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.Henry Cowen, 41, stood stoically inside the defendant's box, watching Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon accuse him of murdering 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. Friends at the courthouse said Lukosky was a beloved butterfly breeder, who was "so lovely."The investigation began when Lukosky's mother requested a welfare check in early October, after not hearing from her daughter for several days. Officers came to the gray flat the couple shared on Cowen's mother's property in Cardiff. They saw Lukosky's car but noticed a foul smell coming from the residence. A few days later, they executed a search warrant and found Lukosky's dead body and signs of a violent struggle inside the bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," Layon said. But that was not what killed her. The Medical Examiner said Lukosky died of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Prosecutors believe Cowen then left North County, first to got to Los Angeles. Then they said he took a Lyft to Riverside County, where he met with his children's mother. Investigators believe it was then that Cowen took steps to escape the country."That woman and her father, at his request, took him to the Israeli Consulate there, so that he could make arrangements to obtain a visa to get out of the country to move to Israel," Layon said. "They learned when they were going through the process, that would take six to eight months, and an expression was then made that the preference would be to go to New York."But before he could leave, officers with the Fugitive Task Force arrested Cowen in Riverside County on Oct. 11. He remains in custody with no bail.Cowen has an extensive violent criminal record, including assaulting an ex-girlfriend in California and kidnapping and torturing a man in Washington State. Because of that, if convicted, Cowen faces a maximum sentence of 55 years to life in prison. 2106
