SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness. Even though mom or dad is home, it's just a long process to try to stay here with their families."Dahlberg said although controversial, she is proud of the work she's doing."People will say 'oh you're helping illegals, you are helping people who are breaking the law,'" Dahlberg said. "I say no, we are helping the children. We are helping us citizen children keep their parents here." 1823

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - At least one person is dead after a collision with a tree off a South Bay freeway split their vehicle in two overnight.The crash occurred just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the southbound Interstate 805 connector to State Route 905 in San Ysidro, according to California Highway Patrol.Officers said the driver, who has yet to be identified, was traveling southbound on I-805 when he hit a tree. The collision split the vehicle in two and sending half of the vehicle into the westbound lanes of I-905.CHP officers said a portion of the vehicle also caught fire.The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to officers. (CNS) - Kobe Bryant's widow, Vanessa, responded Thursday to a lawsuit filed against her by her mother demanding financial support and claiming the late Laker legend had vowed to take care of her financially for life.In a statement posted online, Vanessa Bryant accused her mother -- Sofia Urbieta Laine -- accused her mother of trying to "extort a financial windfall from our family." Bryant said she and her husband long supported her, allowing her to live in their properties free of charge."She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request," Bryant said. "She now wants to back charge me per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers."Bryant said she has tried to make peace with her mother to no avail."Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast," she said. "Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn't good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries -- contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn't changed -- and demanded million, a house and a Mercedes SUV."Bryant said she refused, causing her mother to make "false and absurd claims" while demanding "more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive.""She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me," Bryant said. "She wants to live off of my daughters and me for the rest of her life while continuing to collect monthly alimony from her ex-husband since 2004. My husband and I have never discouraged or kept her from providing for herself. This lawsuit is frivolous, disgraceful and unimaginably hurtful. The suit also claims that Kobe Bryant had "promised to take care of (Laine) for the rest of her life.""Unfortunately, Kobe Bryant's promises did not see the light of day as he is now deceased, and Vanessa Bryant took each and every step she could to void and cancel all of Kobe Bryant's promises made to (Laine)," according to the suit. "Vanessa Bryant did not intend to honor any of the Bryants' representations, agreements and promises at any stage."The suit claims Laine, while serving as a nanny for the Bryants, worked around the clock without being afforded meal or rest breaks, while also working holidays and weekends. She also claims Vanessa Bryant forced her out of the home she was living in while Kobe Bryant was alive.Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were killed in a January helicopter crash in Calabasas that also claimed the lives of seven other people. 3214

(KGTV) -- Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced Thursday any caravan migrants who seek asylum in the United States must wait indefinitely in Mexico until their immigration proceedings at the U.S. Port of Entry are complete.In her speech, Nielsen announced the end of the American immigration policy nicknamed "Catch and Release." Catch is the migrants' initial meeting at the US Port of Entry. Release is the process in which asylum seekers are released into the U.S. with an ankle monitor until a later court hearing.The criticism has been that migrants ignore the court date and never finish their legal proceedings.Instead, in an emergency proclamation, Nielsen announced the start of what some are now calling the "Catch and Return" policy."Once implemented individuals arriving in or entering the United States from Mexico illegally or without proper documentation may be returned to Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings," Secretary Nielsen said. "They will not be able to disappear into the United States."While the Central American migrants wait indefinitely, Nielsen said that Mexico has agreed to provide humanitarian visas and work support.University of San Diego Immigration law professor Ev Meade said this new policy is not realistic. "Who's going to pay for the services that people need in Tijuana?" Meade said. "The US isn’t going to pay, Mexico just slashed its refugee budget for the upcoming year, and Tijuana really can’t afford to continue to pay for the services it's paying, and the state of Baja California is basically bankrupt." Meade said the Trump Administration's "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" mentality toward immigration, is irresponsible. "Just declaring as a blanket policy where Mexico is going to take responsibility for all of this, this seems like a colossal mistake," Meade said. He said many "Caravaners" do not want to stay in Tijuana, especially after a recent uptick in violence. Last weekend, two asylum-seeking Honduran teens were kidnapped, robbed and killed in Tijuana. Like many of the President’s other immigration policies, Meade believes this policy will most likely be shut down by a federal judge unless tweaks are made."If they make it more of a voluntary program where people can opt to do this, and it's incentivized and allows people to work in order to get themselves back together in Tijuana while they're waiting to get their case heard, and they've in fact decided to do that, then it could work for some members of the Caravan," Meade said. Homeland Security officials said this new policy excludes asylum seekers from Mexico. While the policy is effective immediately, the changes will be rolled out gradually across the border. 2753

Sears Holdings will close another 63 Kmart and Sears stores following the 2017 holiday shopping season.On Thursday, the company made the announcement to employees at the affected stores, which span 26 states.The closings affect 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores.
