ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) — A San Diego dirt bike racer is recovering tonight in Mexico after a bizarre mid-race crash with a mystery SUV.On Saturday morning, about 60 miles southeast of Ensenada, 29-year-old Josear Carrasco was racing a course he knew well. On this day, he would not finish."Just devastated. It's really hard. He's my everything, so it's hard to see him like this," said his wife, Kylie.Kylie was in a truck along the course when she got the news. Josear was in second place, nearly done with his 100-mile stretch and about to turn his bike over to a teammate. That's when he says he collided with an SUV that had driven onto the course, headed toward him. "He tried to veer off to the right ... the car veered off in same direction. Then, a head-on collision. He doesn't remember anything after that," said Kylie.Josear was discovered by spectators and a teammate, with car parts scattered nearby."Something exploded. When they found him, his gear was just melted off," said Kylie.Josear suffered second-degree burns up and down the left side of his body and broken bones in his arms, legs, shoulder and shin. He also suffered a ruptured intestine, but he was alive."Once I saw him breathing, my heart dropped ... because that's all that matters," said Kylie.Josear has already undergone several surgeries at a hospital in Ensenada. His family trying to raise money for a medical transport back to San Diego, while Mexican authorities hunt for the hit-and-run driver. Federal authorities are investigating after officials in Massachusetts confirm that a ballot drop box in Boston was set on fire early Sunday morning.According to WCVB-TV in Boston, a ballot drop box out front of the Boston Public Library's main branch in Copley Square was set ablaze around 4 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. Crews eventually extinguished the fire with water.According to WCVB, an "incendiary device" was used to start the fire. WBTS-TV reports that the FBI is investigated in the incident."For the next several weeks, it is a top priority of our offices to help maintain the integrity of the election process in Massachusetts by aggressively enforcing federal election laws," the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts said in a joint statement.Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin also both condemned the incident in a joint statement.“What happened in the early hours of this morning to the ballot drop box in Copley Square is a disgrace to democracy, a disrespect to the voters fulfilling their civic duty, and a crime,” the statement read. “Our first and foremost priority is maintaining the integrity of our elections process and ensuring transparency and trust with our voters, and any effort to undermine or tamper with that process must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We ask voters not to be intimidated by this bad act, and remain committed to making their voices heard in this and every election.”Officials later determined that there were 122 ballots inside the drop box at the time of the wire. Of those ballots, 87 were legible and able to processed. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Old Palomar Hospital on the eastern edge of downtown Escondido could be redeveloped into hundreds of new homes and thousands of square feet of commercial, recreational and office space.In a letter to the city, developer Integral Communities says it wants to turn the site into a 450 homes, and 5,500 square feet of commercial spaces. The project could serve as a new gateway to downtown and add some much needed foot-traffic to Grand Avenue. Some businesses were closed Wednesday despite this being the midst of holiday shopping season. Beth Stevens, who owns the Vinklectic boutique on Grand Avenue, said she would welcome the project and the crowds it could bring. "I think new development is a good thing for everyone," Stevens said. Other business owners, however, said they are concerned about the project's increased traffic. But Rorie Johnston, who heads the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, said downtown needs to become more walkable. "The more you can slow people down, the more you can keep people in an area longer, the more possibility you have to engage with them," she said. Integral reached a deal with Palomar in February to buy the site for million. Palomar moved most of its services to its new hospital in west Escondido in 2012, making the older hospital available. It still offers cancer treatments, mental health services, and has office facilities at the downtown site. A hospital spokesman says it expects to stay in the downtown location through March 2020. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Graffiti referencing the New Zealand mass shooting that left 50 people dead was discovered at the scene of a possible arson at an Escondido mosque early Sunday morning. According to police, the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Islamic Center of Escondido located near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Escondido Boulevard. Police believe members of the mosque were able to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Seven people were inside when the fire was reportedly set. No one was injured and minimal damage was done to the building, according to police. "Our message to community is to make sure they keep a watchful eye out,'' Escondido Police Lt. Chris Lick said. "If they see something suspicious, especially around a house of worship, they should call police.''According to police, graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the mass shooting in New Zealand, though details on the graffiti weren't available. Police tell 10News they are investigating the incident as attempted arson and a possible hate crime. No suspects have been identified at this time. Following the fire, members of the mosque scheduled an interfaith prayer vigil. The event will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Escondido. "Once again, we will stand together in love and prayer as we show our unified support for the members of this local Mosque and for the Muslim community at large. EMERSON, Iowa — While many in Southwest Iowa saw the strongest of Friday's thunderstorm, one Emerson couple watched a funnel cloud spin from the cloud outside their home.Larry and Marlene Skalberg, who live right just east of Emerson, have lived in their house for 39 years. They've experienced storms throughout the years but never saw one up close like Friday's storm that created a funnel cloud right outside their front door. "It was just neat to watch it and how it formed and then how it started to get smaller and then it just disappeared," said Marlene. Marlene said she got an alert on her phone about a tornado warning that advised people in the area to take cover, as northeastern Mills County was under tornado warning for part of the afternoon. She started heading towards the basement, but her husband Larry grabbed a chair, a beer and headed for the front lawn."He was like, 'look! A tornado! Go out on the lawn and take pictures!' So there I am out on the lawn just taking pictures and I'm like, 'what if the tail just comes down and takes?' " said Marlene.Larry wasn't worried. He said he enjoys watching storms brew and has experienced several tornadoes in Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas. "I like to watch storms coming in and the clouds forming. I always have since I was a little kid," said Larry. "I enjoy storms. But if the funnel cloud had touched the hill...well that's a different story." 1436
