CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A nearly million dollar grant was recently awarded to the Chula Vista Elementary School District to focus on Science Technology Engineering and Math Programs.Some parents noticed the recipients of the grant were all schools in the east side of Chula Vista.“It’s not equal,” one dad told ABC 10News. He didn’t want to use his name, but both of his children attend a school on the west side of Chula Vista.“They need to find the exact same thing that covers the west side schools,” he said.The Military-Connected Student Academic and Support Program grant—which is 0,000—is a five-year commitment to STEM, according to a news release from the district.The schools that will be receiving that grant money included:- Enrique S. Camarena Elementary-Corky McMillin Elementary-Saburo Muraoka Elementary-Olympic View Elementary-Wolf Canyon ElementaryAll the schools are in the Otay Ranch area.Matthew Tessier, the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Instruction, said the schools were chosen based on the number of military families.“Part of the grant application is there needed to be 10 percent or higher military-connected children at the school and we picked our top five military-connected schools,” Tessier said. District spokesperson Anthony Millican said the requirement was set by the Department of Defense and no schools on the west side meet the requirement for the grant. There are 12 schools in the district that have more than 12 percent of enrollment identified as military-connected students, according to the district website.“We’re really cognizant of supporting our military-connected children because I think a lot of times we forget that they have a lot of unique needs… whether their parents are deployed, whether they have one parent leading a household for multiple months,” Tessier added.According to numbers given to ABC 10News by a district spokesperson, there are more than 1,000 military-connected students in the five schools that received the grant. 30 percent of Wolf Canyon’s population are military-connected students, which is the highest in the district.Camarena, Muraoka, and Olympic View all reported more than 20 percent of their students as military-connected. McMillin Elementary was at 19 percent.The school district’s project is calling “STEAMing into the Health Sciences.” The grant will allow participating schools to have the opportunity to attend the district’s Health Station, which is the latest in a series of hands-on learning stations creating with community partners.The participating schools will also have access to an online platform to introduce students to industry professionals, host weekly after-school STEM programs for select military-connected fourth graders, as well as provide a 1-week long summer camp for some military-connected students.Tessier said the Health Station experience will not be limited to the schools who received the grant. “We are committed—all means all. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A woman accused of stealing a car containing two young children from outside a Lincoln Park cell phone store and driving to the U.S.-Mexico border, pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and child abduction charges.RELATED: Police: Woman arrested after stealing car with kids inside, trying to cross border into Mexico?Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 26, was ordered held without bail pending a review hearing next Wednesday.  The father of the 8-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy parked his gold Hyundai Excel outside the Cricket Wireless shop in the 200 block of Euclid Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Monday and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked and its engine running, according to San Diego police.   Moments later, a woman who appeared to be in her late teens got into the car and drove off to the east on Imperial Avenue with the children still inside, Officer Luis Roman said.Police searched for the stolen car and missing children until shortly before 2 p.m., when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the southern terminus of Interstate 5.There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver  - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident.   Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said.Police have not established a motive for the alleged kidnapping. 1553

CINCINNATI -- Kyle Jacob Plush called 911 twice hours before he was found dead inside his car at Seven Hills School. Plush, 16, first called 911 at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday. He cried for help and repeatedly told the operator he could not hear what she was saying.“I can’t hear you … I need help, I’m gonna die here,” Plush said.The first unit, with two Cincinnati officers, was dispatched to respond at 3:23 p.m. They arrived minutes later, reported not seeing anything and attempted to call Plush’s phone. There was no answer. A Hamilton County sheriff's deputy checked the area again at 3:48 p.m. to no avail. At some point, Plush called 911 a second time. It is not clear the exact time he made this second call."This is not a joke," he said. "I am trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van in the parking lot of Seven Hills ... Send officers immediately. I'm almost dead."A passerby called police at 8:56 p.m., and dispatch requested police and ambulance minutes later. Nick Francis, director of Experiential Learning at Seven Hills School, said in a 911 call a security guard contacted him and told him to call 911 because they found a kid in his car. Francis told the dispatcher he wasn’t at the school, but they had been “missing a kid.”“I got a call from a security guy there because we were trying to find this kid, and he just all of a sudden called me, 'Nick we found him. (AP) — The potential magnitude of the wildfire disaster in Northern California escalated as officials raised the death toll to 71 and released a missing-persons list with 1,011 names on it more than a week after the flames swept through.The fast-growing roster of people unaccounted for probably includes some who fled the blaze and do not realize they have been reported missing, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said late Thursday.He said he made the list public in the hope that people will see they are on it and let authorities know they are OK."The chaos that we were dealing with was extraordinary," Honea said of the crisis last week, when the flames razed the town of Paradise and outlying areas in what has proved to be the nation's deadliest wildfire in a century. "Now we're trying to go back out and make sure that we're accounting for everyone."Firefighters continued gaining ground against the 222-square mile (575-square-kilometer) blaze, which was reported 50 percent contained Friday night. It destroyed 9,700 houses and 144 apartment buildings, the state fire agency said.Rain in the forecast Tuesday night could help knock down the flames but also complicate efforts by more 450 searchers to find human remains in the ashes. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista Police identified Tuesday a man and woman who were shot by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in a deadly domestic violence dispute near a Costco. The incident happened Monday afternoon while Angelina Perez, 32 and Samuel Valdez, 31, were loading groceries in the trunk of their vehicle in the parking lot of the store on Broadway with their infant daughter in a stroller. Sean Illian, 48, approached them with a gun and opened fire, hitting Perez and Valdez several times, police said. The baby was not hurt.Witnesses in the parking lot saw Illian shoot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police said Perez and Illian had been in a relationship which ended badly in 2018. Perez began dating Valdez just after the breakup, investigators said.
