SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Chesa Boudin, the son of anti-war radicals sent to prison for murder when he was a baby, has won San Francisco's tightly contested race for district attorney after campaigning to reform the criminal justice system.The former deputy public defender declared victory Saturday night after four days of ballot counting determined he was ahead of interim District Attorney Suzy Loftus. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An appeals court today overturned a ruling that would have allowed the conditional release of the “Bolder Than Most” rapist, Alvin Quarles. The ruling was issued by the 4th District Court of Appeals Monday. The court said, in part that “Quarles is a serial rapist whose crimes were shockingly brutal and destructive. If he fails after he is conditionally released, considering his past, we shudder to contemplate the consequences of such a failure.”After news broke of the reversal, Dianne Jacob, who serves on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and has been adamantly against the release, spoke out on Twitter. We must continue to fight the placement of sexually violent predators into our communities,” Jacob said in part. The ruling comes after San Diego County Superior Court Judge David M. Gill's decision to release Quarles to a home somewhere in San Diego County. After his release, he would have undergone treatment through a conditional release program.Gill's ruling followed a series of closed-door hearings that involved testimony from psychiatrists and other experts. Quarles was dubbed the "Bolder Than Most" rapist due to the way he attacked his victims at knifepoint, sometimes forcing the women's husbands or boyfriends to watch. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to committing over a dozen sexual assaults in the mid-to-late 1980s. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Dreamers across San Diego have a week's worth of rallies, protests and programs planned on Community College Campuses.Students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, say it's time to come out of the shadows on campus and show their fellow students, teachers and administrators the role they play."DACA students are here, Dreamers are here, and they’re here to stay," says Miguel Mellado, a DACA student at Southwestern College."We have to really stand up and say we’re here, we’re proud, we’re working hard, and we deserve more," he says.Mellado's parents brought him to America when he was eight years old. He didn't learn he was undocumented until middle school. He says it left him feeling isolated.His desire to find community, and help others do the same, is what led him to help organize this week's "Undocumented Students Week of Action."Events begin Monday at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and Southwestern College. The San Diego Community College District has already announced their support of the programs.An estimated 1,000 undocumented students are enrolled at those colleges."DACA recipients are some of our hardest working and brightest students, and it is our duty to advocate on their behalf," said San Diego Mesa College President Pamela Luster."Clearly, these deserving students who came to the U.S. as children, who have not been convicted of any crimes and who are earnestly seeking an education to improve their lives, are tremendous assets to our community."But that support has upset some people in San Diego who feel DACA students take opportunities and resources away from other students.Raul Rodriguez, Jr., the California Coordinator for America First Latinos, told 10News that taxpayer-funded schools shouldn't be supporting events like this since the students were brought into the country illegally.Meanwhile, the DACA Act is tied up in courts, after President Trump announced an end to the act in September of 2017. Mellado says he and his fellow Dreamers shouldn't wait for the government to solve the issue."I don’t believe policy helps that much," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County.The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said.The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141
